  1. Have been watching this Korean show that has people eating jjajangmyeon all the time. Will have to get some this week. Wish they had jjajangmyeon delivery at all hours here like they do in Korea *sigh*.
  2. Oh forgot to mention, yes the name has changed it's called Metro Hop now. Or something like that.
  3. Hmmm, the first time I visited the name was the same. It's possible they changed it I guess. Going to Metrotown today, I'll double check the name to be sure.
  4. Last I saw it was still Lee's. Pretty much looks the same from the outside but inside you wouldn't recognize the place.
  5. I thought Lee's Chicken on Kingsway had closed down for good. Didn't think it was too much of a loss, except that I no longer had a place for Korean fried chicken relatively close to home. Even when the place first opened it looked like a rundown little shack. Dimly lit with some odd looking plants in inconvenient places, the place looked neglected. There was a huge grill dedicated to teriyaki, except it was never used. The menu was faded and it seemed like it sold a bit of this and that, without much effort or really focusing on anything. Recently I heard from my dad that Lee's had reopened...and it was good. The man responsible for reopening has been in the restaurant business for years. First he opened the little foodcourt inside of Hannam before moving onto the seafood restaurant "Blue Ocean" across from Han Ah Ruhm, both located on North Road. He's also run and worked in some other places that I can't remember now. Getting to the point, the place has been renovated and actually looks like a restaurant now. Tables are mostly full at night and it seems to be getting busier. It's understandable with their decent portions and fair prices. With plates of crisp chicken for $13.99 and noodle dishes starting at $6.99. They even have a nice variation on a classic black bean noodle dish where they've added hot peppers to it. In the last 2 weeks I've been there 3 times. It seems they're still working out a few things with the menu. There were 2 items that I've had that I wasn't too happy with but overall the quality of the food is good. It's not fine dining but I'm happy to have a place for some good Korean comfort food so close to home. Some pictures to look over for anyone interested. I'll probably head back and try some new things when I can.
  6. Wow, I wouldn't have even thought of getting a connection there. Good idea though since the service there is so slow .
  7. The only place I've had shawarma is at Best Falafel on Commercial Drive and I was hooked. Since I live so close to Crystal Mall I think I'll drop by Abdul's when my next shawarma craving hits, thanks .
  8. dystopiandreamgirl: I think my jaw dropped open when I saw your charlotte. It looks amazing. Love the pizzelles too. Everything looks perfect. jumanggy: That has to be the most chocolatey looking crepe I have ever seen. I want one .
  9. Oh, didn't realize a thread like this existed. Tried making some flan yesterday. There were some air bubbles and I found it a bit too dense, but I wasn't completely unhappy with the results. I'll probably try out a different recipe next time or play around with the one I tried out.
  10. Bah, too late for me now. Only coffee shop I ended up going to was B Espresso and was pretty happy with the coffee there. Also thanks to Matt for providing us with some much needed caffeine after our flight.
  11. The only waffle place near Burnaby that comes to mind is the Waffle House in New Westminster. I was only there once a long time ago so I can't really say if the waffles are good, but it might be worth a try.
  12. Funny, I was just talking about HSG last night when I was telling my sister that there was a steak house I wanted to try out. She's out of the country at the moment but I told her that I'd treat her to some meat when she comes back. Pretty excited about trying the gingerbread pudding since I've only heard praises being said about it on the forum.

    Metro

Oh wow, great photos. I hope I get a chance to go before I head to TO, but it seems unlikely. I guess I'll just have to wait till I get back .
  14. I could've sworn I posted pics of my visit to Modern Club but I guess not. I got my friend addicted to the cinnamon pancakes, they're very good and a great deal at $1.
  15. Hi Renka, thanks for the invite. Hopefully Matt has time, but if he doesn't it's understandable. If you could let me know in advance I'll try and make room in my schedule. Six days in TO really doesn't seem to be enough .
  16. Does anyone know when Metro is going to be open? Was hoping to have a birthday dinner there this Saturday, but have a feeling it won't be open .
  17. Hi, I'll be visiting TO in early July and need some recommendations for coffee. Will be staying on Queen Street West around the Eaton Centre so any places around there would be great. Thanks.
  18. My dad isn't here today (Father's Day) so we bumped dinner plans up to the 13th. Decided on Tojo's since it was a place that he had heard of by reputation and he seemed interested in going. I was hesitant at first because my dad knows his seafood and I knew that ambience alone wouldn't cut it. After each course I would nervously glance up, trying to gauge their reactions. Many times there were nods of approval and they seemed to enjoy the experience overall. My dad concluded that the seafood at Tojo's was pretty good, but that you could find equally good and better seafood at much lower prices elsewhere. It was my second time at Tojo's so the experience wasn't as special for me. Many of the items were a repeat from my previous visit. However, there were two dishes that I really enjoyed. A white fish spring roll and a smoked sable. Don't think I'll be having omakase at Tojo's anytime soon, there are many other places that I would like to explore. Thanks again to everyone for their many suggestions and here are some pictures from our Father's Day dinner.
  19. After reading this I had to give microwave poached eggs a try. So I made some eggs benedict this morning. Did a lot of peaking and door opening at first, but I think I have the hang of it now. Ended up with nicely poached eggs with a runny center. Thanks.
  20. Tried out Okada Sushi yesterday and had some very good and fresh sushi. Got a call from my mom part way so I asked if she wanted to join me. When we got there she said that she had been to the same location before, although it had been a different sushi restaurant at the time. When we went in it was obvious that the staff were Japanese and not Korean, like the previous restaurant. I ordered the nigiri that I mentioned earlier except I forgot the hotate. For rolls I ordered the negitoro and the prawn tempura roll. My mom ordered the BC roll and California roll, she had a bite to eat before. I really overestimated the size of the sushi, I'll be sure to order more next time. The sushi was good, the rice wasn't mushy or too overly flavoured. The sushi tasted fresh and the staff were attentive, except when it started to get busy and I had to ask for some more tea and the bill 3 times. I'll definitely be going back to try the other things they have to offer. Unfortunately I won't be taking my dad to Okada Sushi on Father's Day. Although it's a great place to go for a casual meal, it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. We'll most likely be going to Tojo's instead. Okada was great and I'm thrilled to have found a place for some fresh sushi. I'd like to thank everyone for their many suggestions, I'll keep them in mind for the next time I'm in need of a seafood meal. Oh, and here are some pictures from Okada.
  21. The pickled plum, is it the sour stuff they put in the triangle shaped rice balls? Umeboshi? I tried an umeboshi candy years ago and had to spit it out . Good to hear that you enjoyed your sushi. This is making me wish that Friday would come sooner. Probably won't be getting a california roll; but if I take my parents there I know my mom will order one for sure, don't think I can stop her either . The last time I checked their site Yoshi Tabo was still cutting up the fish at Blue Water .
  22. Took a look at the Okada menu and decided on a small sample of items I'm interested in trying. Nigiri: Sockeye salmon, salmon, amaebi, hotate, hamachi, toro and maybe the uni. (More items can be added or substituted if people name some "must try" items.) I'm also looking to try at least 2 rolls, anyone have any favourites they can recommend? Edit: Is there a peak time that I should try and avoid when going?
  23. The Blue Water Tower is what made me wanna take him to the Blue Water Cafe. Still not set on where to take him. I guess I'll have a better idea after sushi this Friday.
  24. Ah, thanks for the warning. I was thinking of dropping by at lunch. I'll be sure to go there for dinner. Any favourites?
  25. Edit: The idea of scouting Okada Sushi first just hit me. I'll head there later this week, maybe Friday, to check out the atmosphere. Thanks for the recommendation, it's always nice to hear about new places.
