  1. Thanks, Matthew. The is experiment is poorly constructed and badly controlled for variables. It appears to have significant artifacts in the data gathered that do not support the hypothesis given, e.g., that blacks are undertipped as a group, therefore tipping is unethical. The sample size is too small and gathered from only one eating establishment over the course of three services, again, an insufficient amount of data to support the hypothesis. Indeed, the authors say in their concluding paragraphs that their project is meaningless. If I were reviewing it, it would get a passing grade as an undergraduate project, but scholarly work it isn't.
  2. The recipe I have (my grandmother's) uses butter and brown sugar for the glaze. The butter and sugar make a caramel syrup. They are cooked together until bubbly and fragrant and the blanched carrots are tossed in the glaze and cooked through. I guess you could glaze them with maple syrup and no butter or oil, but I'm not sure the end product would be the same.
  3. The stickers are fixed at the processing plants. The produce goes out to vendors who in turn sell it to the markets. The inventory control goes far beyond what you may be picking up at Trader Joe's or the gas station, even.
  4. Proven? I would like to see a citation on that.
  5. Gail is classy and very pretty.
  6. That does sound awful,, Twyst. It's all fun and games until someone gets a spiral fracture.
  7. Who is going to enforce this and why? This professor?
  8. It's inventory control. If all of the Fuji apples are just sitting around and the Granny Smiths are flying off the shelves or vice versa, the stores will know which apples to order more or less of.
  9. The posturing is already getting on my nerves.
  10. Disliking a trend or a thing for no reason at all is silly and not a respectable position to take and be taken seriously. Irradiated foods have been sold for decades in Europe. GMOs give us the ability to reduce famine and disease. Being against practices that are nationwide, indeed worldwide and decades old "for no reason at all" is preposterous.
  11. $5 each? I think not.
  12. That's true, gfweb. I guess you can't teach what you never learned yourself! This really is a pet peeve of mine, is the constant snacking. I grew up in a household that did not serve snacks and when I was grown, I never learned to like them since I wouldn't eat my meals if I ate a snack. Consequently, I have really never had to watch my weight even though I enjoy desserts and bake a great deal. Of course, this isn't true for everyone and it is just an anecdote. Still, looking around at my shlubby townsfolk with their giant drinks and giant bags of snacks always at arm's length gives one pause.
  13. Those aren't trends, those are traditions! I agree that they have been around long enough to be traditions. Having listened to my parents talk about what they had or more likely, didn't have to eat as children during first the Great Depression and then the rationing of WWII, who can blame the food manufacturers for dreaming up foods that would be quick, cheap and occasionally tasty. Have you seen the adverts for Jell-O from the 1920s? They make it sound like something the Queen would serve. Plus, refrigeration in the home was new, replacing the old ice box. All that said, my most disliked trend is the one that is moving children and teens away from eating with utensils. There are way to many finger foods and other items that may be eaten out of hand. Children in elementary schools are served their noon meal with a "spork" like a prisoner. How are these kids ever going to learn to manipulate a knife and fork?
  14. I just went out and checked on my parsley and it has gotten extremely leggy in the past week. It's been unseasonably cool here lately, but decided to warm up a few days ago, so I guess it's taking advantage of the sunshine. I had weathered this parsley in my greenhouse last winter and it was moved into a larger pot before it went back out. Generally, it does very well, but I have it shaded by the stairs that run up to my second floor deck.
  15. I was going to ask if the cilantro had bolted, but from your photo I'd guess not yet. I believe your weather has been very mild for this time of year, too. Was the plant pot-bound when you planted it? It may have forced itself to early maturation.
  16. I don't have anything against SV I just don't have the budget to invest in any more equipment or the room to store it.
  17. He should have looked in the Superdome where Shep Smith managed to find cannibals when no one else could because there weren't any. That's quality reporting, right there. /sarc
  18. I'm with you about the WW bread, GR. I like my bread to fight back a bit and it makes better toast.
  19. It sounds like trying to differentiate between the different Indian tribes where I live. I'm about 1/32 Cherokee and have blue eyes and blonde hair, yet I'm forever having people ask me what Tribe I belong to.
  20. I miss a lot by not subscribing to HBO. What does Treme mean? My French is not that great and I don't recognize it.
  21. Thanks, Celeste. And here we are, 120 years later and Soledad O'Brien who is as Creole as Mr. Plessy, calls herself black. Life is strange.
  22. Be careful there, Brown Hornet. You'll have the native NOLA folks on you like a duck on a junebug. Someone give me the executive summary of what exactly Treme is, please. That name is a little twee.
  23. Yup. Bourdain has plenty of money. He can spend it reimbursing the Tourism Bureau and wallowing in his good deeds.
  24. Yes. That's why I said spectrum.
