  1. The US Marines and the Israeli Army are bringing relief supplies to the people, but they are hampered because the roads are impassable. The people are looting the homes of the dead. The Red Cross is taking cash donations and can be contacted on their website if they are not in your cities. The Filipino community in the SF bay area, some 650,000, are marshaling relief efforts, as well.
  2. The Executive Chef that I used to work for confided in me that at his age (I believe he was not quite 50 then), he felt that he had destroyed his body by cooking for so many years. He had bad knees, a bad back and terrible migraines most of the time. He had in fact stopped working the line at all and was creating menus and trying to find something else to do with the rest of his days. If felt sorry for him. He had spent so much time devoted to his career that he had neglected his family and his health.
  3. Black Velvet tastes like college, to me. I was trying to think of a bad Japanese whiskey and Suntori is the one that I thought of first.
  4. Ooh, Fig Newtons. I don't buy them either since I love them. Too much.
  5. Looking at aerial photography of the flooding, it appears that the rice crops for this year may be lost as well. Clean water is going to be difficult if not impossible to come by in many areas, as is the fuel to boil any water available. The storm has claimed a possible 10,000 lives and it is moving to land in Viet Nam, now. Anyone who can should contact the Red Cross to see how they can help.
  6. I love Masterchef Junior. Tonight is the finale and I bet Dara takes it home!
  7. That's only because you were surrounded by Nashville, Jane.
  8. I've only ever seen WASPs in old movies eat spaghetti with a fork and spoon. It smacks of stereo-typing to me.
  9. EdwardJ, I win! I called it several posts up from yours.
  10. Okay, I looked it up and Julia Child says it is a sautoir.
  11. My little granddaughter dispenses with utensils and uses her fists.
  12. I'm with Elizabeth on this. It is a saucier and my most used favorite pan.
  13. I have a set of sandwich cutters that will give the sandwich a decorative edge. Hope this helps!
  14. We eat what we like: meat, starch, lots of vegetables and fruits and whole dairy. None of us is overweight nor have we ever been. I've also never used food as a punishment or reward for myself or my children. We have such a distorted relationship with food in modern life that I think a lot of people feel like it is the one area of their lives that they can control. Hence, my insufferable vegan niece who will physically recoil from meats although she was raised on it.
  15. I love wafer cookies, too. Not the gross stuffed with Crisco and sugar kind, but the mocha kind. Jaymes, DeSarroni the amaretto people make a nice amaretti cookie that is packed in a red tin. Two cookies each are twisted in a piece of tissue paper. They are the only commercial amaretti cookies that are worth buying.
  16. I want to go to a reception that has that much cake.
  17. I also love Samoas. They are the best.
  18. We got the distilled water dispenser, such as you described, when the kids were small and used it for their drinking water and also for the animals water bowls. I never had one with the hot water feature, but it sounds like a great option and clearly suits your daughter (and your) needs. I've been getting water delivered to my house/apartment/condo/wherever I happened to live since I moved away from home and haven't ever had a complaint about it. The cost is reasonable and the quality is good.
  19. Likewise, Porthos. Our water is very hard and has a terrible taste to me. It doesn't seem to bother the rest of the family, but I like my water and the tap water is unpalatable to me, so I buy the distilled water for my use. We have had several different filter systems over the years and they all failed in a short period of time because of the mineral burden from our well. Even the expensive filter in my new expensive refrigerator can't handle it. I like the Britta filter pitchers and bought one for my son when he got his own place, but it isn't cost effective for me to use at the rate I do.
  20. Biscoff. I don't buy them often since it is too easy to eat half a bag at a sitting.
  21. They carry other water that isn't distilled. I like distilled water since it makes clearer tea and coffee.
  22. Just buy distilled water from Arrowhead or Culligan. They even deliver it to your home.
  23. There is at my house. That's good enough for me.
