  1. Here's a San Diego thread that might help. San Diego There's also a Carlsbad one I'll try to dig up since that's between SD and OC. Seems to be a consensus that Sushi Ota is the place to go in San Diego. Its off I-5 at Mission Bay (Garnet/Grand exit going south, Balboa exit going North). I like Bertram's at Mr A's, and the view cant be beat. Not far from Sushi Ota is Baci (Italian) which has a good reputation - I think its classical italian. Cant say from personal experience. Downtown, Chives is getting good reviews. Are you fans of buffet brunches? The Orange Hill (in Orange County) is said to do this well.
  2. You sure did, DW. And kids! There's a photo in your first blog of your then one & only throwing a fit on the floor... loved it. Shared it with many parents of small fry heading into that age. Think of it often. I've been to Philly once, for a little over an hour. I found a cheese-steak sandwich, and was happy. Seems like a nice place for a longer visit.
  3. Sour yet sweet icecream ought to work with your smoked fruit. Isnt one of the classic barbecue styles based on vinegar and mustard? That'd be on the tangy side, no? But what flavor sour, to compliment pears? Tamarindo perhaps?
  4. A person can buy folate supplements in pill form. They dont taste as good as Marmite.
  5. I've done this successfully with each onions and kale, so why not leeks!
  6. Two fondue places open in Sandy Eggo. I'd love to see the Magic Pan come back. They offered a good variety of fillings, that took care of the "sameness" of everything crepe. Is Seasons 52 looking like a place ok for small fry, or should it be limited to the older (theoretically more civilized) offspring?
  7. My mom.... only follows recipes. Exactly. I did not learn to cook by general principles at her knee. But damn could I follow a recipe. And now I can read one and tell in advance where the process is screwed up. My mom hates mustard, horseradish and pepper. All things chili. Most things green & vegetable. All these things I learned elsewhere. There were many good meals never-the-less. And mom was willing to let me try to cook any recipe I found, tho sometimes she scheduled it for nights on which she had class. (Unlucky Dad!) One key thing mom taught: Always check the oven contents before preheating it. Turns out some folks store things in the oven. Plastic things, no less!
  8. That yogurt/oatmeal combo was a favorite of my college roomies. It ..... encourages movement. Phew, was that delicate enough?
  9. I DO, TOO!!! I asked for hands AND writing, way back yonder, but that's one thing about getting old---nobody pays any attention to you. In my case, that's just as well. ← I stand corrected, I say while backing away carefully, hands held protectively high..... right backatcha!
  10. Great smile, great to see your hands at work *, and oh my! A meatloaf recipe to try. I dont have meatloaf in my personal pantheon of comfort foods, but the Tenor does, so thanks! *racheld likes these things to include photos of handwriting, I like pix of hands.
  11. My daughter asked for cheese and crackers, so I made her a little cheese and fruit plate and she was set. Her father hit the drive thru after football practice so my offer to make him something was turned down. I had a few crackers, a nibble of cheese, and some milk and called it a night. ← And she SCORES!!!!!
  12. I lost my appetite toward the end too. Snacking worked but I just didnt want to eat "meals", particularly at the end of the day. Frequently there was a foot between the intake and outake parts of my gut and it was uncomfortable. (I was known to poke said foot with a finger til it relocated. The ensuing high-volume gurgle as the food flowed past the previous roadblock sent us into gales of laughter.) I hope you managed to feed the family. Sounds like a night to send them out for a 'bonding' experience at the local drive-thru, to me.
  13. Belated Happy Birthday! Here's wishing you as many more, all in good health. Your writings in various posts hither and yon cause me to take a different look at my city/'burbs. Thanks for that.
  14. That Vegemite ban is reallllly weird. Is Marmite also banned?
  15. Those airmattresses take so much heat from a body. So nice in the warm. In the cold, put a blanket between it and oneself. If cooking is not an option: Canned chicken, dried fruits, a small unopened jar of mayo or mw. Curried chicken salad - good as sandwich, on salad greens (using up fridge day 1), or by itself. I keep NoDoz around, in case it becomes impossible to make coffee. I really love my coffee but my actual physical need is for caffeine. One 2.5 gal water bottle per person, for drinking/cooking only. This is good for several days if one is careful with water use.
  16. Can I buy a set on video? No cable, no routine access. beg, plead, whimper, grovel, beg some more...
  17. Pot holders or folded towels for cake pans, roasting pans etc, but the ovenmitt for things cooked in the oven in the skillet etc. Or if I need to hold something for a time (with tongs or whatever) whilst basting, adding something, or whatnot. I like to have one set of really good ones, and I use them rarely but I am so happy to have them on those occasions.
  18. crumbly cookies - I like the ones termed mexican or italian wedding cake. They are usually rolled into a ball and dipped in powdered sugar (confectioners sugar). You could dye them, or dye the sugar you dip them in. Im not sure how well they mold. Have you found a shrimp shaped mold?
  19. Chestnut milk jam........... :dreamy: Happy hunting and exploring and raising and working. Thanks for making time to include us!
  20. I think the shrimp-shaped pink-something is a good idea. You could use the classic marzipan, or a fruit paste (persimmon, papaya) to get the color. Green - I second the idea of using the kiwis.
  21. Raucous applause! That not-a-beer is such a great visual. Wish I could taste it!
  22. Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah! All very lovely, and tasty looking. My feet hurt in sympathy. And I lust for those green bowls in which the beef was served.
  23. I couldnt resist asking. But seriously, how would you bring vegetables to center stage in planning a meal?
  24. Have you seen the MSDS for that stuff? Look especially at the Health Hazards Risks in Section V. Material Safety Data Sheet for Dihydrogen Monoxide I'm personally also very leary of unsubstituted hydroethanol.
  25. A thread discussing Ocean 1500 at the Hotel Del = Ocean 1500 <editted to correct dyslexia>
