Our county health officer's position on cheese is that hard cheeses, such as cheddar, jack, parmesan, etc. do not need refrigeration but that soft cheeses certainly do.
I love olives of all kinds, but the handiest are those canned black olives from the Central Valley. We love to drain a can of EXTRA LARGE black olives, and dump them on a paper plate at the central work station of our clinic for folks to snack on in the middle of the afternoon.
Taco Temple and Chappala in Morro Bay are about 1 block apart giving N. Morro Bay one of the highest excellent taco densities around. The density goes up if you drive down Main St. to Tacos de Mexico which is also excellent. The cuisine in Morro Bay has been getting steadily better IMHO for the last 20 years.
Taco Bell is maybe my favorite fast food outlet. but let's look at this thing. It rivals a Big Mac in calories, about 530, mostly sat fats with 3.5grams of transfats and a whopping 1300mg of sodium. This thing is a Bomb.
I love marrow roasted. Well, with a little salt, pepper. and garlic. In fact it is amazing to eat. Yes, I think most people are afraid of it because it is unusual and because of the fat content. So for comfort and predictability, they get a Big Mac.
I suggest the Far Western Tavern in Guadalupe which is just a few miles SW of Jocko's in Nipomo. Many people feel that these are the two best steak houses in the state.
Kent, I live on the central California coast and the fish mongers here sell wild-caught Pacific salmon in both fillet and steak cuts. The steaks are easier to handle on the grill and generally cost $1 per pound less than the fillets.
Fond memories of stopping at a gas station near Dime Box, TX en route from Austin to Caldwell where they did have food. It was a choice of Spanish peanuts dispensed from a machine for a penny. You had to catch them as they poured out of the slot. Or you could for a nickle buy a little package of Lance's (Don't go around hungry) orange colored peanut butter cracker sandwiches. Yum. Wash it down with a Dr. Pepper.
I see nothing wrong with scavinging. I find goodies in the garbage can in my kitchen all the time. Many people are too hasty in discarding food which is in the process of mellowing.
I hope the Millenium restaurant is still going strong. It's near Union Square, as I recall. This place is vegan but served arguably the best food I've ever eaten.
I heard on the radio at work yesterday that some person or group or entity (obviously I did not catch the lead-in) put out a list of the most influential people in the country. RR came in second to Oprah Winfrey in their ranking. I couldn't find any mention of this item in the paper today, and have heard no more about it.
It seemed to me growing up in the Lone Star State that ponds lived in East Texas and tanks lived in West Texas. I lived in the middle. The mentions of pimento cheese carry me away. I can also remember the ecstasy of eating my father's pan gravy over any starch but especially white bread. Cheers.
Should you choose charcoal for your fuel, I don't think you can go wrong with the Weber. I grill alot and my Weber is as good now as it was when I got it in 1979.
The world HQ for GRITS has got to be Dallas, TX. I've never seen so many dressed up, bejewelled ladies in any one space as the supermarket in north Dallas I went to for a bottle of milk.
