  1. No comments on Jamaica yet? I liked it. That bit in the cave practically had me hyperventilating, though. Down in a hot, smelly cave with roaches and excrement and bats? I would have gone absolutely bonkers. I was reading an interview with him during which he talked about how grateful he was to be doing what he's doing (you don't have to look very far to find him saying such a thing). During that episode I was thinking that there was NO WAY I could do his job - the cave would have been my undoing. And I couldn't stomach a lot of the food he consumes, although everything in Jamaica looked pretty good. I'm curious about the meat in the pastry he consumed at the market in the beginning about the show. Anyone know a good recipe?
  2. My favorite food show in my favorite city! Can't wait! I am blown away by the talents of the people on that show. And I appreciate that the contestants aren't all pretty and perky.
  3. I thought the New Orleans show was excellent ... the best since the episode on the Texas/Mexico border. It's got to be a challenge to find a new way to depict "there was a hurricane ... things are not back to normal, and will never be ... but there are people doing some things that are hopeful." England/Scotland, on the other hand ... a total snore. What was that bit back and forth to the recording studio? It just didn't hold my interest. But not every episode will appeal to everyone. I still think the guy is brilliant.

    Grocery bags

Fun thread! I am a loyal Wegmans shopper and have thought about buying their 99 cent reusable bags but I know I'd do the same thing with them that I do with coupons. Leave them at home. Or in my car. Or have them in my hand but forget to give them to the cashier. Besides, I need the plastic bags for cleaning up after my dog when I walk him. I wonder if that use would be acceptable to Mr. Baggins.
  5. Hey, that's a good idea! ← Gee thanks ... I wish the folks at Pillsbury thought so! The Bugles also made a really good garnish for a spicy cheesy chicken soup.
  6. My mother-in-law was born and raised in Buffalo and is of Polish descent. She makes a yeast bread called placzek that my husband and his family loves. It is very dry and doesn't have a lot of flavor. I'm guessing it's something you need to be raised on. In Buffalo, they also sell a Polish sausage that is not smoked or cured. It is boiled for ages and has kind of a soft texture. I think it's awful. I can barely stand the smell. Again, I think it might be something you have to be raised on. I made ugali, a kind of mush that's the national dish of Kenya, when my kids were studying Africa. We had an African themed meal for a bunch of families. Unanimous thumbs-down to the ugali. Apparently the Kenyan marathon runners claim that ugali is their secret weapon -- it's no wonder it hasn't spread to other runners. And for the record, while the Garbage Plate is unique to Rochester, it's not something you have to be from the area to enjoy. All the proof you need is the hoards of college students at Nick Tahou's on any weekend night. Oh yeah, someone mentioned perch. If it's the fish I know, they are small lake fish but they are my all-time favorite fish. I'd be shocked if they were counted among the foods only a native could love.
  7. Count me among the food geeks!
  8. I've had them at Green Acres apple orchard in Rochester, NY. They were a tender cakey donut tossed in cinnamon & sugar, not dense. They were delicious, with a subtle apple flavor. I've never made them, though. Good luck finding the pefect recipe!
  9. If it makes you feel any better, I own the same cookbook! And my GRANDMA (who is now 92) got it for me! This was already after we gave her great grandkids!
  10. I have a family with picky eaters. If I couldn't get adventurous with my guests, I'd never have any fun!
  11. One of my hobbies is entering cooking contests. Bugles was one of the qualifying products for the Pillsbury Bake-off in 2006. I did a lot of experimenting with them, and found they make a yummy coating for chicken. Alas, I wasn't a finalist. I think they are addictive, but I haven't had one since then.
  12. I'm not sure if this qualifies, because you actually have to get out of your car to obtain these ... but Panera Bread serves Baked Egg Souffles that are really delicious. My favorite is the bacon and spinach. But I don't like many of their breads. If you are sticking to stuff that you can get through the car window, I don't think the Egg McMuffin is too bad.
  13. I love Penzeys products and have a whole shelf full of them. I received a copy of the magazine and thought it looked like a high school class project, not something you'd pay money for. Granted, I have a journalism degree and worked for 12 years in advertising, so I notice things like bad grammar and layout more than the average reader. But it did not look like a professional journalist could have worked on that publication. After looking at the publication, my impression of the company did go down a notch.
  14. I have piles and piles of food magazines. Generally I rip as I go, picking recipes I want to make someday. And now I have piles and piles of ripped pieces of paper all over my house. Last week I made a recipe for the first time that I had ripped out of a periodical in 1996. It took me 11 years to make the recipe. I wish I could say it was worth the wait.
