Do you have this recipe still? It sounds extremely yummy and I would greatly appreciate it!Found it. And actually, the more I think about it, I'm pretty certain that that silly Thanksgiving was where I got this delicious recipe. In order for any of us to have made Pumpkin Flan, we would have needed 'more' -- more time, effort, skill and knowledge of world cuisine -- than any of us possessed. This recipe, on the other hand, is easily put together. Although I should add that while it is simple, I dazzled friends and family with it for the next couple of decades: Pumpkin Ice Cream Pie Crust: 1 Pkg cinnamon crisp graham crackers 1/3 C melted butter Grind crackers into crumbs. Mix with butter and press into a deep pie dish. Soften 1 qt best-quality vanilla ice cream. Snip ½ jar (and we all bought McCormick) candied, crystallized ginger into small pieces. Combine ginger and vanilla ice cream and pour into crust and freeze. Combine 1 C canned pumpkin, 1 C sugar, 1/8 tsp salt, ¼ t powdered ginger, 1 t ground cinnamon. Mix well. Whip 1 C cream to soft peaks. Gently fold whipped cream into pumpkin mix. Pour over frozen ice cream. Dust top with pumpkin pie spice. Freeze until firm. ← Bow down to Jaymes people! This is an awesome and so, so easy recipe! What a wonderful combo of flavors! Thanks Jaymes!

Mashed them too long! The times that I've ended up with glue have been when I let the mixer go too long.

Here is one that I really like from Midwest Living last Fall: Chicken, Artichoke, and Brie Soup: http://midwestliving.com/recipe/recipedeta...requestid=44914 (Wish I knew how to link the word so nice and neat like everyone else!!! ) Question: One of my favorite restaurants in Kansas City, Hannah's Bistro, had a Celery and Gruyere Soup for special one day. It was to die for! I e-mailed them about the recipe, but got no reply. It was a really creamy soup... any ideas or even recipes?!? Edited to add: Ooh... and a good corn chowder recipe! Would like one with a little spicy kick to it.

That's so funny that you said that, because I've been craving red meat lately, and I usually don't eat that much of it. All I've wanted is steaks, steaks, and more steaks! I think my cravings bend on obsessions. The local custard place has a concrete with pretzels and caramel sauce, and I'm addicted to it. So, I've been obsessing over the perfect salty and sweet combo in baking... I was thinking a caramel cheesecake with pretzel crust and chocolate drizzled over the top! Am also obsessed with comfort foods lately... shepherd's pie, beef stew, etc. Always obsessed with garlic! Apple Cider Mushrooms Crystallized Ginger

Yes - you're correct about the continents, but honestly, other than roast penguin I can't think of a single thing that grows or lives in Antarctica other than the penguins. Or you could consider the ice in the pre-dinner cocktails the Antarctic contribution. So that leaves six. You could think of a famous dish from three or four continents and do the wine from the remaining ones. And since Vegemite sandwiches probably wouldn't impress anyone, I'd suggest sticking with wine from Down Under instead. ← How about gourmet sno-cones? That could be really fun! Mizducky... let us know what you end up choosing! Please!

Maybe it's too simple for you, but I think a Fall Splendors menu would be really fun! (Also, don't know when the meal would be served.) I'm thinking butternut squash (really good with the risotto,) lots of apples, hot cider, etc. Maybe that's just what I've been craving lately though!

Katie, if you can't find the shows on TV, try checking out PBS websites. If you like going totally nerdy, you can probably get some of them on DVD! ← I may have to go nerdy! I just checked out PBS, and the only shows I get are on Sat. morning and it's Everyday Food at 10:30, Lidia's Family Table at 11:00, Chefs A' Fiedl at 12:30, and BBQ University at 12:00! That's it, unless I could catch some cooking on the Teletubbies, but I don't think I'm THAT desperate! What if I don't get Sara?!? I will be so sad!

I get to meet her and I'm so excited!!! She is coming to KC and teaching a cooking class and you get a copy of her cookbook signed! I can barely contain myself until November! As for the move, I thought I had read that she said Food Network was going in a different direction and that didn't include her? Did I make that up? I can never seem to find the good cooking shows on PBS that everyone always talks about... I think they must be on at weird times here. I think fans will follow her, so hopefully there's enough of us!

What about Mexican vanilla extract? I know some people don't like the flavor of it, but I actually prefer it, and you can find it really cheap! I always get the store brand butter or Always Save or whatever, and I don't notice a difference... however, I do notice a difference if I buy marg instead of butter... not good!

I can't believe someone hasn't mentioned the quince... obviously, you all didn't pay attention in art history!!! The quince was the most painted fruit because it was symbolic of luh-ove! http://www.cookingcouple.com/atoz/q.shtml (and yes, I caught the typo too!)

I've figured out a way to get rid of "drop by" guests... just be in your robe when they show up! My boyfriend's brother and his girlfriend had a bad habit of just dropping by at odd times. One day they dropped by, and we were having what we call a "robe day" (we hang out in our robes and cook and eat and just be lazy!) Needless to say, they haven't "dropped by" again!

I love my KitchenAid and use it probably three or four times a week on a good week... I use it for baking, mashed potatoes, whipped cream, dips, etc. I also just like to look at it! It really is a piece of art, in my opinion! (Of course I have the red one, so I'm biased!) My future in-laws bought it for me and they bought the future sister-in-law one also (the lesser model of the two! ) and she walked in to my apartment one day and said, "oh, I see you got a dust catcher for Chrismas too!" Pick jaw up off floor. I wanted to lecture her, "do you know how many people would kill for a KitchenAid!" But, I was nice and told her all the things I use it for and just left it at that! This is also the person that throws away pots and pans if they get too dirty and she doesn't feel like cleaning them, so I would have just wasted my breath! Anyway, sorry for the tangent, but the bottom line for me is that it has definitely been a fun addition to my kitchen!

My best friend once said this about the curry spiced french fries that I covet at a local restaurant! I think my chin dropped to the table! You should have your own second Thanksgiving dinner with just your family... that's what we do! It doesn't have to be ON Thanksgiving and you can serve as much garlicky mashed potatoes as you like!

It depends on where you're at on the pay spectrum!

If I didn't know that you lived in Lake Superior, I would have thought I wrote that and forgot about it! Yikes!

How about pumpkin cheesecake with a cinnamon graham cracker crust? Very fall! Edited to add: Oops... somehow I missed that in your original post... sorry about that! Actually, I was wondering if Apple Cider Cheesecake would be possible earlier today, but it might be difficult to get all those flavors concentrated enough.

I grew up with the opposite as well, but do remember my great grandma making a lot of that stuff, and so still have fond memories. My best friend's mom was definitely more of the down home cookin' kind, so we would call eachother and see what was for dinner and then decide where we were eating... the best of both worlds! That pot roast recipe is similar in some flavors to the one I like a lot: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/re...6_28425,00.html I might try yours tomorrow... and so continues the comfort food weekend!

Hi Kim... found you! Michael Chiarello did a show a while ago about making over potluck classics and he did a version of Green Bean Casserole that might help you. Even if it doesn't help, it still looked REALLY good! http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/re...6_29055,00.html I've been obsessed with pot roast lately, so it must be a comfort food time! I was thinking about making Bobby Flay's recipe for Chicken Pot Pie with Sweet Potato Biscuit Crust this weekend...

There's a recipe in the September's Martha Stewart Living for a fig newton type cooking using jam in the middle... it looks very good.

I have some Penzey's crystallized ginger that needs to be used....

I posted this story on the Food vs. Family thread a while back: "For years now, (I'm 25) my mom and dad (and my brother and I) have had to eat mediocre food at my Grandma's house on Thanksgiving. I like some of her food, but Thanksgiving is particularly awful... dry turkey, doughy stuffing, bland mashed and extra lumpy (not the good lumps!) potatoes, etc. Luckily, my mom has always made the pies! A few years ago my Grandma had had some health problems so we offered to do Thanksgiving at our house and actually, at the time, she was thrilled! We didn't do anything really "weird," but we just kind of flavored it up a bit: we made turkey with an onion and garlic jam, stuffing with dried cranberries, homemade cranberry dressing, roasted brussel sprouts, cream cheese and garlic mashed potatoes, etc. My grandparents and my aunt and uncle barely ate, but afterwards, my immediate family agreed it was the best Thanksgiving meal we'd ever had, if we did say so ourselves! The next year, my Grandma announced that she would be having Thanksgiving again because she just wanted to have "regular" food! How horrible is that?!? So, now we have our own Thanksgiving meal on a different day and just look forward to that! Who says you can't have more than one Thanksgiving meal?!?" My immediate family is pretty much up for any kind of adventure, with the exception of my little brother. I think he would have a fit if we didn't have pumpkin pie. I was thinking about trying a pumpkin cheesecake this year though... I wish I could eat at some of your houses for Thanksgiving! We do have our own tradition for Christmas that I like... Christmas Eve and Christmas morning it's pretty traditional stuff, but Christmas night, we order Chinese! I love that!

Love it... and it's the cheapest one on the shelf usually!!! (That's why I originally bought it! Happy accident!) Kind of has a smoky chipotle flavor. I wasn't going to admit this one until someone else did, but nobody has, so I'm scared, but I'm going to go ahead... rotisserie chicken from the grocery store! I use it to make chicken salad sandwiches, in pastas, in stromboli, etc. I love it! Don't make fun please! Also like Old Bay and Mrs. Dash extra spicy! Store-bought pie crust also!

Just wanted to let you guys know that there's an article in the latest issue of Chow magazine entitled, "College Cooks Gone Wild, Creme Brulee in the microwave, and other desperate dorm room tricks." Kind of interesting! Be careful if you're on a dry campus and you attempt the Beer Biscuit recipe! Edited to add: Oops! I got a little too excited... there's only 2 recipes in the article, but there is a website for more: www.chowmag.com/dormcooking

My life long dream, well almost, is to visit the Mustard Museum!!! http://www.mustardmuseum.com/ Unfortunately, live-in boyfriend HATES mustard, but what he doesn't know won't hurt him! I use it in salad dressings, marinades, and I love it with a pot roast of some sort!
