  1. What's bizarre are the sounds emanating from his mouth - he must have a microphone in his molar.
  2. Smoke them
  3. One of the most expensive meals I didn't pay for was courtesy of Gordon, a few years ago in Rochester. I remember that freezing night, his hospitality, and the chefs and waiters practically genuflecting before him. Thank you, Gordon. The most expensive meal I've paid for was at Le Baccarat in the Casino de Hull, now the Casino de Lac Leamy in Gatineau, Quebec. I took my parents. Three martinis, a bottle of wine, superb service and one of the five best restaurant meals of my life. Four hundred CDN. But I can discount that, I suppose. On the way out, my mother fell into a chat with the maitre d'. She said she loved the Egyptian cotton towels in the Ladies. He disappeared for a few seconds and returned with eight, which he gave to Madame with his compliments. I'd mentioned the beauty of the orchids on the tables. He snapped his fingers, talked to a waiter, and I left with a spray worthy of the Queen on a ceremonial visit. Some enchanted evening. ← Cheers Maggie, the company was delightful.
  4. Re: Frites The memory is fuzzy but they must have been good at least. I only seem to recall poor or exceptional cuisine.
  5. Waaaay back in the days when I was bartending...a group of 5 girls, 5 separate orders, 5 different shots, 5 credit cards to process for each single drink.
  6. He was probably an adoptee - my mother used to feed us smoldering lumps of coal if we cleaned our room.
  7. Another reason why my next venture will be Splendido and Colborne Lane (or Susur - it's been a while)

    Dinner! 2007

It's a rare occasion that I take an entire saturday off. Being a part time landlord keeps me very busy. But a visit from a old friend and his future bride proved to be a worthy occasion. The task at hand would be a day of golf with dinner to be determined somewhere. After many, many, many drinks and a sunny, raucous afternoon - going out to dinner was out and I was put to the cooking challenge. The challenge was dinner for the five of us with whatever was in the house. Being my mother's son, there is always enough food for an army but is it still frozen? With the pork butt from the day before, 15 scallops and 3 steaks, i was not one to back down. A slice of Prosciutto di Parma and melon to hold them off for a little while. My Spicy Asian Gazpacho with a Sherry, Soy and Balsamic syrup and pickled cucumber Seared Scallops over Hoisin and Garlic BBQ pulled pork and horseradish creme fraiche. Zucchini Napoleon stuffed with sweet corn, sauteed mushroom, and edamame. Sirloin prepared Bulgogi style and Soy Truffle demi glace with pickled cucumber on the side and a stripe of hot chili sauce. Now the curveball that was to be thrown was the fact that my bud's new girl is a vegetarian. Wanting to make a good impression, I did the zucchini "chop" for a hearty entree. Turns out, when she's a little tipsy, she eats chicken wings and now, Bulgogi Finish if off with a little fresh peach whatever you call it Not a crumble, maybe a clafoutis? How about perfectly ripe Peaches in cooked batter with Redi whip from a can.
  9. How did I miss this post? Hit the Rich Port Bakery sometime for tacos (i think they may have moved next door next to Java's though. Muy Delicioso!
  10. I've read that all vinegar should be used within 3-6 months after opening, but have never heard of the need to refrigerate it. What is it about red wine vinegar that causes it to require special treatment? ← If you leave if out for too long, it turns into wine.
  11. Must be good if you're putting it in the same sentence as the Max - will have to give it a look see.
  12. Has anyone been to Rosalie's Cucina lately? Always a good hearty meal in the past.

  16. What are some of your favourite places to eat? I only manage to get down there every couple of years or so - been a while since I ate anything other than what you see here. BTW - i think the place we stopped for lunch was called Narula. Oh, I also said I suspected that some of the street eats may be illegal in Toronto. Upon further reflection, I think it may be legal to set up on the sidewalk if youre associated with an adjacent restaurant. So, some of the stands may be legit. And, the law is beinng changed anyhow - which may allow for things like corn on the cob etc. Cheers, Geoff Ruby ← It is my understanding that it is legal for them to set up outside their restaurants.....we'll see what happens with the law change. I like Siddartha quite a bit, we order off the menu, not the buffet, and there is a good dosa place on the opposite corner (sorry can't come up with the name) beside a beautiful sari shop. Just looking at the colour in the windows and the gorgeous material is a treat. We tried Paan down there one day, and I must admit I am NOT a fan, felt like i was eating sand flavoured with perfume, lol. Another place I went to once does a great thali plate.....i'll try and come up with a name. I haven't eaten at Narula I don't think. ← Udupi Palace?
  17. In one sense he qualifies, but does the fact that neither you nor I remember his name disqualify him at the moment ? ← that's probably exactly why he does qualify! Rocco would if he had anything open at all. Tyler Florence lives in NoLIta and I know that he's been scouting space on and off for a restaurant for years...(has he ever been a real chef?) ← He cooked at Cafeteria back in the day if memory serves. The meal wasn't memorable but that doesn't mean it was bad.
  18. This thread rocks Kamsahamnida
  19. The house rule is no left over wine.
  20. I'm thinking international - not a good choice for a US tourbook, or hotel guide. I'll substitute Mama Leone
  21. Gordon Ramsey Joel Robuchon Come to think of it - the NY dining scene is so steeped with history, the places were the celebrity long before the celebrity chef phenomenon. Places like Tavern on the Green, 21, etc
  22. I’ve been lazy note taker this year but these were some interesting wines we had last night at our monthly “Singles” night. We bring whatever we feel like – no theme, set menu, etc…just drink what’s in front of you, and eat. 2002 Belles Soeurs - Ana Vineyard – A little stink in the nose that blew off. Good acid and dark fruit mixed with strawberry/cranberry. Brickish and light in color, smoky mineral with a silky texture (and just a hint of soy sauce) I say cranberry because there was this hint of tart sourness – not prominent or a defect. 2005 Radio Couteau – La Neblina – Dark and Ruby in color, superb balance in nose and flavor. Prominent dark fruit with sweet spice. Silky tannins, so young and so balanced, not going to wait for these to get better. 2001 Betts & Scholl Hermitage – I guess the grapes are sources from Chave Vineyards, would love a side-by-side comparison. Full and lush with velvety tannins and dark pitted fruits, leather, dirt, and mocha. Didn’t detect any of the florals I vaguely recall in the 01 JL but for price, who’s complaining Dogfish Head Red and White – It’s a Belgian style Wit bier fermented with the raw juice of pinot noir grapes. Not sure of the blending or the style but it was tasty. A grainy nose accented by the Pinot fruit. The flavor comes across as light pinot but no inherent sweetness. I may have expected a Lambic in style (maybe too sweet for beer aficionados) but I thought it was balanced and veeery drinkable. Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA – Like dessert wine, toasted grain and PX Alvear Solera sherry. It’s so rich, I don’t think I could get through another bottle.
  23. These are the types of places to grab some drinks and people watch. I wouldn't recommend them for culinary merit.
  24. I'm guessing this was a joke? ← Nope, Ghost bar is(was?) a pretty cool hipster joint over the restaurant N9NE on W.Randolph. Never been to Spoon but hear it's a scene place as well.
