  1. yup, i work next door and will be very sad when they close their doors. we were so happy when they opened as there are not that many good lunch places nearby that is not an arm and a leg. not to mention, that they are very good neighbours! i too will be stocking up on the frozen pies and sausage rolls. also, the kingsway location is closing on the 13th.
  2. now THAT sounds like my kinda feast! i anxiously await the suggestioins about to pour in from the pros.
  3. Very sad indeed.. Do you know if both locations are shutting down or just the robson street locale? ← I drove past the Kingsway (Burnaby) one the other day and it was closed ← i had a chat with cliff (the pie guy) and he said that the kingsway location is closing it's doors on the 13th and the robson one on the 20th. as for it being closed the other day, annanstee, i know that they aren't open every day due to slow sales, so maybe that was the case??
  4. oh, by the way, i also remembered reading around xmas time that senhor roosters had a whole roast pig event on boxing day. that might be another place to check for roast pig.
  5. this thread brought me back to my childhood of growing up in malaysia. my parents used to love throwing huge parties where my mom would cook for weeks in preparation. my uncle always showed up with a baby suckling pig and i can still see it hanging up, spread eagled and he and my dad smearing marinade on it. it would horrify me now with the whole food safe thing, but it would hang there for hours in tropical temperature soaking in the spices. my dad had a big barrel that was cut in half to make a rotisserie and they would throw huge amounts of charcoal in it and roast the pig in it. the smell was always incredible and the results of the piggie was delicious. tender juicy meat with the crispiest skin on it.
  6. 1: RIP Herald Street Cafe. this left me a little shell shocked 2: congrats to chef Fowke! 3: it's been leaked to me that the Kiwi Pie Co is closing it's doors on friday Jan 13th. time to stock up on frozen pies while you can (if you're a fan, that is).
  7. jeff called back from aurora today and we're in! our first dinner at aurora....i'm at the same time ashamed and excited!
  8. wow, thanks for sharing, lee! looks like a fantastic time was had eating your way through hong kon. it's been years since i've been there and it's always interesting to see what other people eat when they visit. it's such a huge city with such choices in food. i do recognize the names of a few places you've mentioned though. not bad for a 9 year absence. sooooo, the big questions is now, is the food better there or here? or is it completely different? btw, love the mickeydee's visit for red bean pie!
  9. I was also surprised the toptables opted out this year (from the looks of it). But I've noticed that the TV site is only displaying 136/144 restaurants, so there are some missing. ← so does anyone know which restaurants are missing on the list?
  10. after much time on the phones today, we have tables at c, cru, provence and pastis! still waiting for aurora to call back though....crossing my fingers. although, after reading this and alllllmost tasting the gbp in my mouth, i might have to add the hammy to the list!
  11. Mmm. Butirmoth. With two patio light shake-fuls of moth in every creamy jar. Their blog makes for an interesting read, especially the post about the building's tenants. I also liked the "I feel like I need to head out into the woods and do some acid or something…" quote. I would definitely eat at a restaurant whose owners espouse this philosophy, and I'd order the mushrooms. ← at least when the munchies hit, you don't have to go far
  12. sounds like everyone is going to feast like the gods! have fun and happy new year to all
  13. we're off to pender harbour for the weekend! picked up a couple of buffalo steaks to be thrown on the barbie and a bottle of guado al tasso 2000 to go with it. (on the recommendation of the former owner of coco pazzo who was standing next to us at the store. thank you, if you lurk here!!) i also have a chunk of vacherin, a chunk of blue cheese soaked in port to nibble on during the weekend. *edited to add name of wine*
  14. thank you!!!! famous foods it is as it is the closest. i knew someone around here would have a source.
  15. A belated Christmas present ... Burgers Etc, is NOW OPEN SUNDAYS! Is it wrong that I'm excited about that? A. ← a wholeheartedly absolutely not!! i'm with you there! next question is.....when is the club doing a barge in?
  16. Happy holidays to all! I would like to recreate the truffled ganache i learnt in the chocolate and pastry class but I'm missing an ingredient. Anyone out there know where to find the liquid sugar glucose i need? i could substitute it with corn syrup but i'd like to use what we used in class if possible. Thanks!
  17. we had a superb ravioli at the lumiere tasting bar last night. filled with mascarpone and butternut squash with a truffle butter sauce. i know this isn't a simple bowl of pasta, but i just couldn't resist. it was simply incredible. i do, although, second the arriva vote. gotta love the carb loading!
  18. happy happy hoho, zuke! i've really enjoyed your blog and the constant smile that comes with it. thank you. the food description and pics always make me hungry and your family is lovely. enjoy the rest of your time with your family and have a safe journey home! cheers to you and your loved ones.

  20. *wipes tears of giggles from my eyes* thank you for this, zuke! for bringing a big smile to my face. i love it! oh, and if the perogy bee is going on, please sign me up! i'm a perogy making virgin, but i learn fast. i am all over that idea!
  21. good morning, zuke! a wonderful blog so far. i'm so enjoying the stories, the wit, and the photos. you do us proud! yummm, perogies! an old friend is from dauphin, manitoba, and i loved going there for xmas as we always would have a huge ukrainian feast. homemade perogies, cabbage rolls (i know how to say it but not spell it...holopchy?!!), sausages and etc. my other favourite memory from there is going to the local husky for borscht on borscht day. such a canadiana moment. might i bug you for your recipe for the chai shortbread? that sounds absolutely yummy! have another fabulous day of food adventures!
  22. just picked up a vacherin and a chunk of alice spurrel's port marinated blue cheese! doin' the happy cheese dance!

    Stollen

^^how can i get my name on that list?!!
  24. i knew you guys wouldn't disappoint me! wow, cru is definitely my new favourite place. i'm already planning my next meal there. first off, the room is gorgeous. simple, clean and so pretty. i love the blue light at the entrance and the light fixtures. we had a lovely and friendly experience with all the staff and our server (whom i didn't get the name), was wonderful and so helpful. we started with a couple of drinks. joie, i forgot about the mim-tini, sadly, but they make a mean lemon drop! my friend had the "out by 8" and it was very tasty. for our first courses with the ceasar salad and the smoked albacore tuna. the ceasar was interesting and i loved the "crowtons"! but the tuna, oh the tuna....melted in my mouth in a symphony of song. simply delicious. i had a glass of the viognier/pinot gris by heartland. nicely paired. for our mains, one friend had the tenderloin with blue cheese souffle (which was high on my list), my other friend had the lamb loin and i had to have the braised short rib with mac'n'cheese. wow, is all i have to say. the beef short rib was so tender, such a full deep flavour and the mac'n'cheese was full of yummy cheesey goodness. i had this with the peter lehman barossa shiraz. dessert.....they had the lemon tart. lovely and tart. nice crust. i had the goat cheese tart (thanks, joie). i have never had anything remotely close to this. interesting with the goat, but i loved it. not too sweet, gentle goaty flavour and the sour cherry compote was perfect with it. i have nothing bad to say about this night. i only can count the days till my next visit. thanks, to all of you for your recommendations. you were all bang on. yay!
