  1. I wanted to make an apple crisp. I thought I'd replace the flour with matza cake flour. I didnt have any and I was just experimented so I just whizzed up existing matza meal in the magic bullet. I used oats and some almonds( some of them I partially ground). It came out sooooo good. Then I found out Oats are Chamesh. Boo. I was looking forward to it. My friend told me about a crisp recipe using matza farfel. I'm going to do a search online and see what I can come up with.
  2. Ch. 9 yesterday afternoon had a segment on it that stated Safeway/Vons and Costco were cancelling it and Ralphs was "considering" it. Kroger is the parent company of Ralph's. I hope they drop it too.
  3. just another reason I'm glad I dont eat beef.

    Matzo Brei

I use the thin whole wheat matza. 2 sheets. I pour boiling water over it, let it sit for a minute or two. Pour out. I whisk 1 egg, and 1 white, splash of milk. Pour over. Fry in a bit of butter. I scramble it around while frying. I eat with a bit of real maple syrup cut with sugar free syrup or like my mom served us, with sugar and jelly( or jam).
  5. You seem to be turning into quite the organic environmentalist . I have never found a dishwashing detergent that works as well as Cascade. However, I find that I can get by using a very small amount of it per load, unless I'm washing really dirty stuff...and I (99% of the time) run my dishwasher on its shortest cycle. A box of that stuff lasts me months. Do you have hard water? We do and we have to use Finish dishwashing tablets. I also use Lemi shine. The cascade didnt work in our hard water.
  6. I was perusing Pinterest and found a recipe for homemade laundry detergent. The recipe made a HUGE batch and according to the recipe, costs .01 to for a load of laundry. My clothes are clean. I have 4 dogs and I wash towels and blankets numerous times a week and I'm amazed how clean everything is. The biggest difference between this detergent and conventional is the lack of sudsing. I have an HE machine, so this detergent is perfect for it. I made it in a Home Depot bucket, the bucket was more than half full. 2 bars of Fels Naptha( or Zote) laundry soap 1 box of Borax 1 box of Arm N Hammer WASHING SODA 1 2lb box of Baking Soda. 2lbs of Oxi Clean( I used an off brand from Wal*Mart) 1 container of Purex crystels( this is optional, its just for the scent). Alternatively, you could use Downey Unstoppables too. Shred the Fels Naptha( I used the food processor and then I pulsed it to chop it finer) and mix it with all the other ingredients. You're supposed to only use 1 tbls in the machine. I might use a bit more than that. I love it, I'll never go back to buying detergent again. I think I figured out it cost me a bit over 11.00 to buy everything.
  7. I have the Vita Mix Creations. I got it at QVC for a Today's Special Value. I like it a lot, however I've watched the BlendTec demo at Costco numerous times and now I wish I would have bought that instead. I think its a better value. I ended up buying the dry blade jar for the Vita Mix for another 100.00. I also like that you dont have to tamper down whatever you're making with the blendtec. I like all the pre-sets too. If I had to do it over, I'd go for Blendtec. Its 350.00 at Costco.
  8. I do this all the time - putting the cubes into a plastic ziploc bag and laying flat in the fridge so they do not clump. It only takes a few minutes on the counter to make them pop out easily from the trays. Alternatively you could check thrift stores and flea markets for the old aluminum ones that had the pull handle to dislodge the cubes. If you find those aluminum ice cube trays, please pick me up one too. I have 2 and I am seriously dreading the day they break. They make the best ice cubes. They are harder and more solid than ice that is frozen in plastic. I also have psoriatic arthritis and I dont have a problem pulling the lever. a quick run on the backside under the faucet helps too. I posted a pic of those trays in my last foodblog. I love them so much.
  9. Id read somewhere that potatoes and carrots and celery absorb a lot of the pesticides so its better to eat organic. Onions have natural defenses( compounds) to pests so they arent sprayed with pesticides. Basically, dont waste your money on organic onions. I ONLY buy organic potatoes and celery and I try to only buy organic carrots. The carrots taste much better IMHO.
  10. I just bought some organic brown rice( Masa brand) at the San Fran Farmer's Market. I believe Trader Joe's carries organic rice too.
  11. I blew out my KA making bagels.( and I only made half batches too). I replaced it with a cuisinart. It was reasonably priced, had a better warranty and 1000 watts. I've been pretty happy with it.
  12. I love Hershey's black magic cake. I always mix up the dry ingredients and keep them in a ziplock bag. Then, you just dump it in a bowl and mix with all the wet ingredients. You do need a cup of hot coffee, but you could use instant. a 9x 13 bakes in 40 min. Cupcakes would bake up a lot quicker. When I had a big catering job one summer, I mixed up all the cookie dough dry ingredients in advance and put them together when I got there. I made Martha Stewarts kichen sink cookies. The recipe makes a ton and oh so popular.
  13. I live in Santa Clarita, CA. We're known for our chain restaurants, seriously, we have one long street where they are mostly all located( on the same street as Magic Mountain, gotta attract the tourists). My partner received a gift card for OG so we sucked it up and went. The restaurant was packed, there was over an hour wait on a Tuesday night. I DONT GET IT. The salad had the weirdest odor, like preservatives or something. It definately came in a big bag. I asked for breadsticks that were plain( no "garlic salt butter" brushed on top". I was told I had to wait for them. No one ever asks for them like that. Our meal ended up being comped because we sat at the bar and were ignored for 30 min. It saddens me that local restaurants that serve good food go out of business and yet there is an hour wait to get into these horrible chains.
  14. How much is the cookware that is made in Denmark? I think its scanpan? Also, how much is an ebelskiver pan?
  15. How about a nice babka or a sour cream coffee cake? Maybe a frittata? I'd have to have a black and white because that screams " NY" Jewish deli brunch to me!!
  16. If it were me, I'd bring back the empty bags. TJ's stands behind their products, they will refund your money, even though you threw the product away. I'm sure they werent cheap either.

    Cooking for 26!

Actually, Jerk Chicken is a very good idea. Nobody else has made it, and mixing together eleventy-six ingredients is worth it if I'm making vast amounts. I'm cooking a week from today, and I'm thinking of making some sort of cheese sauce for pasta. Trader Joe's has some excellent cheese in the $5/lb range, and I figure four pounds of parmesan and asiago should make for a pleasantly strong sauce. (Also, someone asked me if I would.) Beyond making a bechamel with a little garlic and slowly dissolving the cheese, does anyone have any comments? A pinch of baking soda in the cooking water usually does the trick for garbanzo beans. Vita Mix has a lifetime guarantee. They are located in Ohio. If you send it back to them, they'll fix it for you.
  18. so cool. I wish I could have seen your room in person. Maybe in 2013 when I come to Toronto for a conference.
  19. Love the panini grill marks on the burrito. You would NEVER see that in Cali. Same with the fries. I remember when I first moved to Ontario and had fries at Taco Bell. I was so surprised that the Taco Bell sold fries. Certainly not tradtion - but really good. Taco Bell does Tater Tots in Cali - don't they? I've never seen tater tots at taco bell. I did see an advertisement for a crunch burrito. It had hot and spicy fritos inside.

    Cooking for 26!

Thanks for the help! What's your favorite thing to do with potatoes? I love baked potatoes with various toppings. For the seniors, they LOVED my scalloped potatoes. Cook onions in some butter with a little thyme and garlic. Add 7-8 russet potatoes, sliced( peeling not necessary). Add 3 cups of chicken stock and 3 cups of half and half( supposed to use heavy cream). Simmer for about 20 min, throw into a pan add shredded cheese and bake.

    Cooking for 26!

Hi, Sorry, I'm studying for the bar exam so I havent been on eG that much( I'm taking a little break at the moment). Yes, I have a rather large thread. I had a lot of challenges because I cooked for a bunch of ungrateful senior citizens in a very small town in SW Ontario. They wanted meat and potatoes every single time. I did manage to cook some other things that they liked. My budget was 3.00 per person, then it was raised to 3.50. I almost always made it, sometimes going under. I shopped a few different stores though, putting in way more time than I was actually paid for. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. TammyLC also has a thread. She cooked for 40, in a cooperative housing complex.
  23. Does anyone have ATT Uverse? I notice that in the "info" section, about the show, they list Tom, Padma, Gail and Lindsey as the cast. I wonder if that means she wins.
  24. Once was enough for me too. It was basically instant oatmeal( they open a packet, add some hot water and throw some chopped apples on top). I'd rather eat an egg Mcmuffin( with the folded egg, not the hockey puck egg).
