  1. Anyone who warned you off Eden Center is utterly paranoid. The place is as perfectly safe as anywhere in the Metro area and moreso than places I walk through every day. That's like not eating dinner in North Jersey because Tony Soprano might come through. And, while you could go years without eating steak and potatoes in the area, when you do get a hankering for them you might want to make the drive into Arlington for the legendary Ray's the Steaks. ← Actually the person that warned us is (or was?) with the government! so I won't say they are paranoid as much as they may be in the know or maybe they ARE paranoid? LOL! and actually the actor who plays Tony Soprano has often come to "The Ridge" (Park Ridge Diner) on occasion. Anyhow - do you know anything about "The Russian House" in Herndon or about Pho 75? (I think it's a Vietnamese chain?) - Thanks again everyone!
  2. Since I can't sleep I was doing some research on my "buyer's" place. Here's a NY Times article that seems to sum it up as a good place for pizza & salad?! http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html...751C0A96E958260 Maybe I'll pick up a pie next time in NJ if it's good enough. You folks let me know!
  3. Thanks Jason for the heads up! Maybe I'll pass on it if the parking's that bad... maybe we'll drive by and check it out anyhow though.
  4. The owner/manager/big-cheese? Vinnie of Big Red Tomato, 1205 Anderson Ave, Fort Lee, NJ, 201.224.6500 is moving into my home soon so I thought I'd sorta/kinda ask if anyone's ever been to his restaurant? I was thinking of checking it out before we leave next week. I hear he makes killer garlic knots and good penne, however that doesn't tell me much at all. I'm sure you folks my friends and fellow e-gullet folks can give me some insider info if we should run over there to help pay his mortgage!
  5. I was definitely considering Eden Center Plaza but was warned off. They said there was a gang shooting there last month, something about a jewelry store robbery as well and it's constantly "watched" by "the gov't" so that is not necessarily a place I'd go for at least 1 year or until it cools off alot. I'm not into ethiopian food per se but I like anything that is NOT steak & potatoes.
  6. ROFL! I like Josefina's answer... Isn't there a way to "cheat" the tomatoes into ripening faster or does that screw up the flavor? I remember hearing something once I think?!?!?
  7. Hubby and I got hungry between chores so we stopped in to grab a sandwich to go! We got: “Too Healthy for this chef” — Asian grilled chicken breast on a whole grain roll with portabella mushrooms, lettuce, tomato and ginger dressing. $6.50 (him!) and me: “Decadent” — port wine marinated roast beast coupled with truffle mousse pate a little lettuce and a little Vidalia fig sauce. $7 I have to admit the Vidalia fig sauce tasted like Hoisin sauce to me... it was delicious when paired with the pate & roast beasty! YUM man it was good! We had a side of sourcream ruffles potato chips when we got home because I forgot to get a bag of chips when I was there... we were running around so much today! I wonder if her assistant Javi will be willing to make a delivery to the Reston VA area on a slow day?!
  8. Between 220-240 Maywood Ave it's 2 doors down from my MIL! (You really can NOT miss the sign in front!) Maywood Ave, Maywood, NJ 07607
  9. Yes, that is Clyde's on Maywood Avenue right after the tracks and right before Myron's? some company and though Clyde's Ice Cream was nothing to write home about -- I love... no LUST? their Italian Ices...YUM! Anyhow, see my last post also on this topic: Louis Ting-a-Ling's over on Bloomfield Avenue in the Oranges as well.
  10. I'd seriously try the Farmer's Market on Mark Lane in River Vale off River Vale Ave tomorrow 12-5pm and see if any of the vendors have them. I know one vendor is a "grow your own" guy/gal so if they are there you can see 4 yourself.
  11. Hello! We're moving to North Reston in 2-3 weeks! Any suggestions as to the best markets, best places to get thai, indian, chinese, pizza etc? anything worth seeing, doing that while we are hotel bound for 2 weeks? THANKS!
  12. Actually I know of a great place but it's in the heart of a very un... well not nice area in East Orange in an "Italian club", you can ask around about it. They have killer Italian Ice (pun intended?!) but if you don't have a good car alarm don't go there. Pits, shaved zest the whole 9 yards. I could show you but I don't know the street it's on unless I drive to it, it's behind bloomfield ave by the parkway about 2 blocks in. The 2nd place is Louis Ting-a-Ling's over on Bloomfield Avenue if it's still around.
  13. OOPS - also I heard there's a good Ethiopian restaurant in DC if anyone knows about it I'd be interested in this as well - any interesting cuisine would work but again preferably in northern Fairfax County! Thanks.
  14. We went there a few months back (I think it's in the chinese food or c46 thread?) we had the pupu (bit greasy but good for our needs) platter. My friends and I enjoyed the Karaoke night. They have Karaoke (sic?) on Friday & Saturday nights and some folks are REAL pro's... amazing if you close your eyes you hear Tony Bennett, Sinatra or Elvis! The drinks are amazing too! LOL - also the food was "typical" polynesian or mild chinese but tasty enough as well. I would not classify it as high cuisine but it's cute and fun and the wall fountains "throwing up water" are interesting to watch as well - they were functioning when we were there. (See Jason's pictures!) The more you drink the more they seem to talk to you! ROFL. ENJOY!
  15. Hi! We're back from our homehunting in VA! Is this the place that will carry your products? KILROY'S WONDER MARKET, INC. 288 Rock Road Glen Rock NJ 07452 We want to fill up a small "to go" bag if we have time for our hotel stay in 2 weeks and if you were busy we wanted an alternate place to buy your food! If not how much time do you need to prep a mixed basket to go? Thanks again.
  16. We're moving to the Reston/Great Falls area in VA within 3 weeks and I would like some suggestions... We are considering Euro Bistro as well as Turin Thai and Yoko on our next visit when we stay in a hotel for 2 weeks. I would appreciate any new/updated places to go. So far we went to the Haandi in Falls Church which was very good except they don't have poori! WOW, I don't think I've ever had an indian restaurant NOT have that before. Lebanese Taverna in Tyson's corner and it was real nice and tasty, also we went to the Tortilla factory it wasn't bad... nice serving sizes and nice service for 9PM at night and a Thai place about 2 blocks before that but that wasn't anything to write home about, limited menu... tasty but limited. I am not into "red sauce italian" eww! But would like some non-steak&potato places. Thanks everyone and I'd love any other places, things to do you can suggest that require minimum walking for us "mobility limited" folks. Take care... S.C.
  17. That's not Snow Pea Tips! That's ONG CHOY (Water Spinach) !! Did they sell them to you as Snow Pea Tips? Shame on them. ← DAMN you markk...DAMN YOU! I clicked on your link and the duck is making me... well shall I say Pavlov's dogs had dry mouth compared to me right now. This is embarrassing, wanna come over and cook for us when we move? You can take a room overnight and go to DC in exchange for room (hotel savings) you'd have to cook us a great meal, we'd pay for the ingredients sort of like that TV series on Food TV called Take Home Chef! Any other takers? (P.S. It's the house in MY link!)
  18. If this place is smart they'll steal...ahem I mean ask EJEBUD (Aka Amazing Hot Dog in Verona) for his style of french fry cooking secrets. YUM! ! ! and ask Silver Oak Bistro for help with a dish that resembles Rags n Fungus to accompany their steaks. One or the other would be a god-like side dish with any meat.
  19. I thought I'd miss Trader Joe's however there is great news in my future! The town we're buying a house in/near has a Trader Joe's and not just one but 2 within 5 miles - Reston & Tyson's Corner (Vienna area)! YAY YAY YAY!!!!! Well we're leaving in 10 minutes to drive down ::GULP:: make a big deposit on a home. At least the fact of TJ's being near by and several whole foods and many MANY shopping areas will make me less nervous about moving away from New Jersey. I hear there are many great restaurants in nearby DC to taste-test. I will miss it's toxic waste and other bad and good features... but most of all I will miss folks at Picnic, Silver Oak Bistro, Fortunato's and other great places.
  20. I felt that Bhoj needs it own thread like other good restaurants that we talk about here on Egullet - Bhoj is located off of Route 17 less than 5 minutes from 17 or 46 or 80 and more than worth the trip IMHO. http://www.bhoj.us/ We went here after missing it for a while and were delighted that they were open on the 4th, what a great way to celebrate. Hubby and I enjoyed the lunch buffet and it had it's usual tasty dishes as well as 2 interesting dishes! They had pasta with garlic and a tiny bit/hint of cheese in it as well! I usually am not fond of most spaghetti/pasta products unless there is something inside... (like ravioli or tortellini) but this was SO good I went back for seconds and so did hubby, also their chicken curry and tandoori chicken were moist, deliciously spiced/flavored and was scrumptious as was their their veggie dishes and na'an. The service is always superior no matter how busy or not busy they may be and the manager? owner? is always so polite and suggests something new if they have it or offers a small sample of something interesting. It is so inexpensive for a delicious and filling lunch buffet of all you can eat! It runs us for 2 buffets with 2 baskets full of hot baked fresh na'an (complimentary) papad's and 1 mango lassi and 2 soda's less than $25.00 - well worth it.
  21. You see we in NJ use a special mix of chemical waste, biological waste, various toxins such as toluene, radon gas by-products and dead folk's (see the legend of Jimmy Hoffa!) to create that special NJ tomato taste that you mentioned. You should try the NJ sweet corn as well... toxic waste goes a long way these days to make food tastier! I wonder if one day someone will market this mix as a special "plant additive"?! In the mean time I have 2 more days to go before I hit the Farmer's Market! ← Well, New Jersey bashing is a popular sport for folks that don't know better, but, living in NJ, it is not any worse that most other States in the country. Sussex county, Hunterdon, Warren, have some goregous pristine countryside. The world is polluted, this is not a New Jersey problem, let's not add to the foolishness of "what exit" or the smokestacks near Exit 13. New Jersey is a great state!! ← Sorry Menton but I use "governmental statistics" to base my comments on... see this: http://www.cnie.org/NLE/CRSreports/Waste/w...es%20by%20State Who is #1 for the National Priorities List for the United States?! NJ with PA coming in a close second. So you are incorrect and lacking accuracy when you say "foolishness" about typical comments that are based on truths or are simply truths, and that " New Jersey bashing is a popular sport for folks that don't know better" - I DO KNOW BETTER!!!!! and obviously you do not. Back to the topic at hand - without "baiting" by other folks. NJ has great tasting tomatoes and you can argue why, however like backsides and opinions - everyone has one. Just some are more noticable than others.

  23. Back to the topic at hand! The River Vale Farmers Market opens THIS Thursday! Noon until 6PM. http://www.rivervalenj.org/ I hope to be able to run over and get something if not this week, next.
  24. Did anyone from egullet register?! I'm curious. I was thinking of trying out but then we sold our home so now we're heading down to the dc/va area to househunt! Goodluck and let us all know the results of your contest.
  25. Makes me almost... ALMOST want to return from househunting/vacation in the DC area early! YUM. I wonder if they will have this available after as well?!
