  1. ^ ah... but of course... No doubt Andrew is hoping and wishing that we will all read and scrutinize each and every issue of the West Ender from now on and partake in an active and lively critique in all he has to say... Right? Kidding....... P.S. Congrats Andrew...... big shoes to fill
  2. In an attempt to vary my poultry consumption... today I picked up some "specialty" turkey cutlets. I'm going to cook them tomorrow night and am considering using this recipe from Oprah's magazine (I know, I know... please keep the snickering to a minimum) but would be interested in hearing how other people like to prepare them. I know that turkey cutlets can become dry and tough fairly easily so that is why I have chosen a recipe with a 2 hour marinade. I have also found a couple of recipes on Cooking Light but as they don't include a marinade, I am reluctant to try them. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Australian Wines

Australian wines I've tried and enjoyed: d'Arenberg - The Custodian - Grenache, 1999 (McLaren Vale) (big FAV... I've tried other Grenache's and they just don't hold a candle to this one... IMHO etc.) Pirramimma - Petit Verdot, 1999 (McLaren Vale) (Second FAV) Mitolo - Jester - Shiraz, 2001 (McLaren Vale) Ferngrove - King Malbec, 2002 (Frankland River) Jim Barry - Lodge Hill - Shiraz, 2002 (Clare Valley) Elderton - Shiraz, 2003 (Barossa Valley) Grant Burge - Old Vines - Shiraz, 2002 (Barossa Valley) Peter Lehmann - Clancy's Red, 2003 (Barossa Valley) St. Hallett - Gamekeeper's Reserve - Shiraz-Grenache-Mourvedre-Touriga, 2003 (Barossa Valley) Vasse Felix - Cabernet Sauvignon, 2002 (Margaret River) Deen De Bortoli - Vat 8 - Shiraz, 2002 (Riverina, NSW) Deen De Bortoli - Vat 4 - Petit Verdot, 2002 (Riverina, NSW) There are a few more but I am going to have to return to the wine store to peruse labels because that's the way I remember the wines. Clever of me, I know.
  4. Well, I'm not sure if these places qualify but they do make me think of "diner" when I drive by them. Planet Java 50's Soda Fountain Café 9178 Glover Road, Fort Langley Gray's Grill 2445 Burrard Varsity Grill 4381 West Tenth
  5. The Fraser Valley Strawberry Growers Association website has directions to several farms. It appears to be out of date however but does indicate that the season should come into swing around June 10th. I've been to Bissett Farms several times and have always been pleased with their berries. They have quite the variety of other berries as well as the summer progresses.
  6. Alrighty then.... I guess I'm just choosing to be dense
  7. ^umm I don't get it.... Of course the old roots to jolly old are a tad week.... must read up again to figure these things out...... obviously. I have rellys close by and am planning a trip to Sussex in the not too distant future.... will need to separate the... ummm.. witty... from the.... "chaff" so to speak. But perhaps you are being facetious and I am just too dense..... Or perhaps not... as they do seem to have a legit website... Just an odd name.... I suppose...... Really must do some serious research before I venture back to the relative laden land.
  8. Has anyone tried Savoury City? The owner used to be chef with Major the Gourmet, then Out To Lunch Catering: The menus seem quite interesting and for new timers the 5 meal sampler pack for $65 or $55 seems like a pretty good deal. I've been considering trying this for a while as I go through periods of not being able to cook at all due to my wacky work schedule. Of course if Chef Metcalf would come over and cook something similar to this every day for the same price.... I'd be a happy camper (((not to mention delusional ))) Back to Savoury City, any thoughts from those who my have tried this service would be appreciated.
  9. ^ it's a pipe like thing for smoking "stuff" with. A more literate description to be found elsewhere...... Here's a linky
  10. ^ Heh Gerald... thanks for the disclosure. In case you are interested.... (but you might not be of course) you could add a note to that affect in your sig line. Now, not to be miss sucky-upppy, or anything... I really, really like the veggie burgers at Vera's...... might just have to do a side by side comparison this week with Fat Burger (that is if they have veggie burgers on the menu). Not that I'm opposed to eating beef anymore.... but I've only had the veggie burgers at Vera's so that seems like the only fair comparison.... for me.
  11. ^ Alrighty then. While, I'm not Lee, I will be the first nosy parker to ask, why might you have "more than a passing interest in vera's and fatburger"???? Inquiring minds want to know. But maybe I'm just being really dense Oh and I'm sure Lee (Canucklehead) will get back to you on your own query in due time I'll be down in the Denman area over the next three days... may have to check things out at Fat Burger myself.
  12. Heh there LMB... welcome Can you provide a wee bit more detail about the grub available at the TC Lions Pub? From your description above... "leaves you full and not (full) of grease".... it would be interesting to hear/read what they have on offer. Ta .
  13. So just what do you consider a bad tip? Less than xx ...... what percentage? Okay... now before my hand gets slapped for being off topic.... I just picked up this latest issue - May/June - and, WOW, I am impressed. You (Gary, Carolyn, Shelora, Jane etc.) are more than giving CityFood a run for the money, I'd say. It's a splendid issue. Looking forward to reading it in detail.
  14. Heh there SeAAtle.... how was the rest of your trip? Do tell...... I'm now going to send you a PM in order to, hopefully, insure that you come back and glory (or gory ) us with all the splendid, or even not so splendid, details about the rest of the meals you had while here in our fabulous city Inquiring minds (aka nosy parkers) want to know
  15. ^ could you (or anyone) describe this drink a little more please? I've never had such a beverage and though I could google it, I'd be interested to hear first hand experiences.
  16. That burger and fries.... oh my Must - go - to - Brown's - soonish! Thanks for the pics Joie
  17. How about The Beecher Street Cafe in Crescent Beach? Not too pretentious but a little on the funky side. I've just had lunch and dinner a couple of times but their brunch menu looks fairly appealing. Not sure if Crescent Beach would be a good compromise from Delta/Vancouver and Langley but it might so I'm throwing it out there. P.S. their website sucks (IMNSHO), so if you haven't been there, please don't judge them on that alone... the place really is quite cool.
  18. Just had brunch this past Sunday at Adesso. Smoked Salmon Benny for me and Veggie Benny for my friend. Both were DY - NO - MITE The hollandaise was zippy yet still light so that we didn't feel that a nap was in order immediately following consumption. The salmon benny had some very sublime caramelized red onions topping the english muffin, followed by smoked salmon, perfectly poached eggs (I like my eggs not very runny - sacrilege though it may be), aforementioned hollandaise and capers. Each bite was just a little bit of heaven. Too much? I also have enjoyed brunch at Feenies (in fact their salmon benedict on the croissant is currently my fav); omelets at Masa's A La Carte; what I would label as deconstructed eggs benny (though w/o the hollandaise) at Aphrodite's; and another salmon benny at The Avenue Grill. Think that covers places of late. After reading previous posts... I think I'm going to need to check out Ouisi Bistro, Raincity Grill, Trafalgars, Bistro Pastis and, even though it hasn't been mentioned yet, Ocean 6 Seventeen. (though brunch there was mentioned here.) Edited because I forgot to add some links to old threads on the subject of breakfast/ brunch: Breakfast Downtown, Where to eat the "morning after" ... and, brunch, where to go? and finally, Brunch, food visit in Vancouver, Please help me plan my trip!
  19. ^ oh fluff and chat away (why stop now? ) but be warned.... the egullet "A-" probe may come out at any time.... you'd best beware And back to Cru.... I checked out their website today and it says that the next wine tasting event is "~Cabernet and friends May 22". Which, we've already established. However, does anyone have any further details? Whom might the friends be, I wonder...
  20. Found a link to a topic which starts out as quoted above and continues with commentary about: Fast and Fresh, Healthy, fast dishes Just a little more, potential, inspiration
  21. There was another topic along the same lines a while back. Here's the link: Food fatigue, What former favorites no longer appeal?
  22. Now, now, no need to go getting all sarcastic
  23. ^ Adding on, I also think that most of the brioche referenced in my above post would be of the pastry type variety in that they'd have savory or sweet fillings. If Flotch is making something like french toast or bread pudding then he/she? would need to use brioche bread. In case anyone wants to make it at home, here's a link to a recipe for brioche bread.
  24. Well, if you could stand to chop a few onions, sauté them, then add some canned tomatoes, some minced garlic, various spices and throw in a can of chickpeas and a squeeze of lemon... that'd probably be done in about 10 minutes. At least the active part of it. You could serve it over couscous or rice or pasta depending upon what spices/herbs you wanted to use. I've also got a fairly quick snapper, onions, zucchini and tomato recipe but again, it does involve some chopping.
  25. There's also The Boathouse both in English Bay and in Horseshoe Bay (as well as other locations). And, in the Westin Bayshore, The Seawall Bar & Grill. I had links to a bunch of others but seeing as they've already been listed above, I'll take a break from being so link-happy today.
