  1. This soup sounds yummy Gourmande.... do you have a recipe that you can share or did you make it up as you went? I just happen to have some butternut squash in my root veggie basket right now and have been trying to decide what to make.... soup sounds like a very good idea.
  2. The headline does read "Chi'c.... I think it's just one of those play on word things. Now I was going to post a link to the courier website for their restaurant review but I checked and they have not updated that section since Thursday, August 26, 2004 @ 11:00 AM!!!
  3. I have to say that I've never eaten at C ... but I just may do so now. What a lovely way to respond to the comments you've read here about diners experiences. Good on yah And, I'm glad to hear that people's input has made a difference in a positive way.
  4. I am pretty sure that the fajitas at Las Margaritas on West 4th are served this way (though not sure if they qualify as being "Texas style")...... perhaps give them a call (604-734-7117) to be sure... but it does ring a bell.
  5. Mr. Maw... what does he know..... elk balls my ass.... it is moose balls where things are at these days .... just ask peppyre! Although we did not sample these balls at Adesso today.... Let's keep on topic shall we?
  6. Stupid question number 1:..... today at lunch between noon and 1:15 who was in the kitchen.... Next stupid question.... Can we have the recipe for the arancini??? Next stupid question.... (I'll PM you) In the meantime... I am sure that any number of business's will cotton on...... it's just a matter of time.
  7. Dinner and a free show. Now that's an evening. ← Just be sure to write a review of it for those of us here.... ← Not looking for a cheap thrill.... not at all........
  8. Go forth..... see what you think.... Try to not keep in mind what you’ve read. I have not been to Kaplan’s but I have been to various places in Montreal. Are you going to have a Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich experience in Vancouver..... I doubt it. Are you going to have a great sandwich..... I think that is a high probability. It's all about perspective folks
  9. edited because of being unintentionally insulting..... mea culpa
  10. For all you cheese lovers out there.... can anyone tell me if the fellow who used to run the cheese shop/section at Lesley Stowe around late 1996, early 1997 is still around?
  11. After my last post in the cheese thread, and accusing Coop of fromagecentric thinking .... I can hardly believe I'm about to say: If you have been to MIX you know it's the place for bread. Yukon Gold - Dill bread.... yum, yum, yum
  12. So if it's not Les Ami then it's nothing? What kind of fromagecentric thinking is that? Now... admittedly, I have not been to Les Amis but I have been to Menu Setters which was their establisment prior to Les Amis. They are great.... I don't dispute that. But I do think that we can broaden our horizons by trying a few other places now and then.
  13. So today I finally went in to the little cheese shop in the mini mall at 4th and Alma. The fellow who runs it used to have a cheese shop on Robson Street which he opened in the 70's and was there until some time in the 80's. He says that he still has some regular customers from back then, which I think is pretty cool. He doesn't have a very big selection..... but I picked up some nice soft goat cheese to go with the Yukon Gold and Dill bread that I picked up earlier at Mix... After today's huge lunch... I don't think I'll be sampling either for a few more hours though...
  14. Edit: Ooops... I misread Andrew's first post.... I'll just have to check this weekend to see if the JSC patio is open yet....
  15. What?! No Vitello Tonnato? You've got to be kidding me! ← One can't try everything yah know... sheesh. I too enjoyed all the items we sampled today and will definitely be back for dinner some time soon. Great lunchtime dining companions as well I might add
  16. You'd best not come to dinner with a group of eGulleters then! A. ← Yeah, but we take pics of our food, not our party!! ← I may have to rethink joining in for burger club if ya'll plan on blinding each other with the flash going off every 2 minutes........
  17. Friday - lunch with SushiCat at HSG.... yum.... gingerbread pudding for dessert And not to forget ..... was great to chat with Neil for almost (or over?) an hour..... what a consummate host.... Friday - on way to stupidly placed sky train station (note to transit authority.... try to make it a bit more obvious would you????) - picked up BBQ Beef Kolachy (ate later.... it was fine, but I'm looking fwd to trying other flavours) Saturday - late dinner at Chianti’s.... great service..... decent wine markup..... exactly what you'd expect for food. Place was packed. Discordant note.... what the f@*&^%k is up with tables taking 50 or more digital pix of their party..... do they have any idea how annoying that is to their fellow diners??? Not only should cell phones be banned from restos, so should digital cameras! Later on Saturday (late show) - saw the movie Sideways (enjoyed it..... would definitely see it again) Sunday - scone and coffee at Mix after run.... all I can say is: OMG.....
  18. Luciano..... can you answer this? (if you don't mind ) Am I correct in my assumption that there was another Italian restaurant in place after "Yew First" and prior to Adesso? I am almost positive I saw signage to this affect and even read something about it (otherwise I would not have posted so above ) but as no one has since confirmed it... I'm beginning to wonder...
  19. I agree 100%.... any industry professional who has left their imprint on the local food scene and seems to have now gone off the radar.... what's up... what's going on..... whataretheydoin now? P.S. Andrew... there are no extra points.... quit brown-nosing again
  20. I'm sure we can all think of a few "famous" or perhaps "infamous" chefs, bakers, restaurateurs, food business owners etc. who made a mark on the BC food scene over the past 10 years or so that we never hear about any more. What I'm wondering is.... who are these people who stick in our minds - where are they now and what are they doing these days?
  21. High expectations during dine-out.... now.... why would that be I wonder? It seems that a number of us "would be restaurant reviewers" seem to have decided to step down from our elevated positions and take a pause in the commentary on our food experiences of late.... As to Bis Moreno ... I've never been.... haven't necessarily been drawn to go, but, I might. From what I gather, some people like it, some don't... only way you're going to know for sure is if you try it yourself. If you don't like it, you won't go back... if you do.... you will. One might assume however, that the point (for the restaurant) of participating in an event like Dine Out is to get you (the customer) to come back
  22. In Wednesday's Courier newspaper, Tim Pawsey does a review of Black Tuna Japanese Bistro and confirms that the chef did indeed once own Taka. Yah!.... I'm hoping they will serve the special yam tempura rolls... crispy yam on the outside, marinated something or other in the inside...
  23. Not that it matters... but I am curious to know whether or not there actually was a restaurant in operation during the transition time between "Yew First" and "Adesso"..... was I perhaps hallucinating? (not the first time ) Although... I could have sworn another establishment that's name also started with an "A", popped up in this spot in the not so distant past.
  24. Welcome - Pretzels.... This is going to perhaps be a bit of a stupid question but is Dan the place that the people who used to work at "Taka" on West 4th started? I think I heard this somewhere... perhaps here... but can't quite recall. I have a great longing for the yam tempura rolls from Taka... all others have totally paled in comparison (and I mean this in the nicest way possible ). If Dan has 'em... I am so there OT but still food related... If anyone knows where these particular type of yam tempura rolls (and if you've had them... you know what I’m talking about) can be found... please let me know... and, well, I'll buy you a beer (or beverage of your choice)! Yes... it has come down to that Now back to where have you eaten lately... oh let's see… home, ...and oh yes... there's always home... and hmmm, home again. Boring, I know.
