  1. I actually never asked him, but I have heard plenty of people call him by both names.
  2. Thanks so much. Yes, there are photos of Dan and Mike cooking, a serene one of a cow grazng, photos of the silos and a HUGE one of the courtyard. Some are insets of the greenhouses and a few other details, and some are portraits, like of Daphne Deven and Craig Haney. There is a site map, too. The photographer, Carmen Troesser, did a wonderful job, as did my editor, Mitch Broder, and our layout editor, Brian McNamara. It was really a team effort. I wish you could see!
  3. This appeared on page 1 today: Stone Barns: The overview These were published on four pages of our Life & Style section today: Introduction The Grounds The Farm The Programs The Chefs Facts
  4. I have a story coming in tomorrow's paper. No link yet.
  5. That is indeed Flanagan's. 156 E. Lake Boulevard, Lake Mahopac. 845-628-9394. But no one answered when I called, so they might not yet be open for the season.
  6. I actually haven't been there, so I couldn't say. It's on my list, though.... as so many are. I could eat out every night and still not get to all the restaurants I need to in Rockland, Westchester and Putnam.
  7. Yup. Know about that one. Are you a fan of the food or just the architecture?
  8. I'm writing the round-up of restaurants for the Journal News' annual issue of Putnam: Living Here. Any new restaurants I should know about or old ones that I've overlooked? Here is a link to the story I wrote last year. I will of course give credit where due.
  9. Have to say, I really don't recommend these glasses. Every single one of my two dozen is now broken — and from little things like drying, hitting against each other, etc. Of the 3 dozen Reidel glasses (champagne, chardonnay and bordeaux) we got for our wedding in 2001, only one glass is broken and that's because it fell off the table.
  10. I didn't want to scare people!
  11. Kind of depressing, but well written and interesting. From a newish feature in my newspaper called Tag Team Fiction. The Incident at Chuck E. Cheese
  12. Hi Marian, Would you mind answering my standard question when interviewing? What are we not asking? Thanks, Liz
  13. Funny. I've had live ants, too, and I thought they tasted like lime. Maybe they are citrusy, then. I've also had duck testicles wrapped in bacon. They tasted, naturally, like bacon.
  14. I have also seen this at Aureole. It's been so long I can't remember for sure how I handled it but I think I wrote the tip on the regular line and ignored the captain's tip line.
  15. Everyone adored the tamales from Dallas Tortilla Factory. They do indeed ship them frozen, and you defrost and then steam to reheat. Moist and flavorful — especially the pork with jalapeno. We still have a few dozen in the freezer. mmmmmmmm. Rachel, I haven't had a chance to try the tamalerias (if it's not a word, it should be) around here yet because the holidays kept me very busy. But hopefully soon — Englewood isn't far at all. I'll report back once I've been!
  16. After looking closely at the Dallas Restaurant Scene thread (I had read it before, but only skimmed), I am now considering Paris Vendome. She does love burgers. It looks more casual than the places I've sent her to before, but that's OK with me. What do you experts think? Richard — I think York Street might be too adventerous for her. She is flexible, but also likes what she knows.
  17. Thanks Mabelline, but maybe it's a little far for them. I'll check the dining listings at the DMN.
  18. She lives in North Dallas. How far is that? Would it be a good afternoon trip for them? They could go to the museum and have lunch or an early dinner? Two different grandmothers! The one in Victoria, while lovely, isn't exactly a hipster.
  19. My grandmother, who, at 81, is very cool and hip, has everything anyone could ever want, so I've taken to giving her gift certificates for restaurants for Christmas. She usually takes her sister, and so far, they've been to the Mansion, Abacus and Lola. I think Abacus was a little loud for them, though they liked the food a lot. They quite enjoyed Lola. The Mansion was so-so. I'm not quite as flush as last year, so I'd like to spend about $100 this time instead of the $150 or $200 I gave her the other times. (They don't drink much so this should be plenty.) Where should I send her? PS -- Wow, this and the tamales -- thanks to eGullet for helping plan my holiday season!
  20. I'm there. Can't wait. Thanks.
  21. I quite like them. They're not as good as homemade, but.... what is? I've never had them delivered before, but they told me they flash-freeze them just after they're made. They get shipped Fed-Ex with ice packs. We'll see. Delivery is coming Tuesday.
  22. I mail ordered from the Dallas Tortilla Factory, but that doesn't mean I'm not still interested in hearing about a good tamal here in NYC. Any suggestions? Now I can just go to the restaurant/deli/bodega and eat there....
  23. I ordered 8 dozen mixed from the Dallas Tortilla Factory to arrive on my doorstep tomorrow afternoon. One jug of green and one jug of red hot sauce, plus some tortillas to boot. It will be a joyous holiday in Nyack this year. Too bad the Mexican woman who sells them door-to-door to my grandmother in Victoria doesn't have such a sophisticated mail-order system.
  24. As a former Texan living in the NYC suburbs, I'm longing to have tamales on Christmas day. In years past, relatives visiting from Texas have brought a few dozen in a cooler on the plane, but this year we'll have no such luck. Can anyone recommend anywhere in the metro area where I can order some? I am willing to drive about an hour (I live in Nyack). I know of some places here in Rockland, but I've eaten the tamales and, frankly, they're not very good. Otherwise, recs for mail order will be cheerfully accepted. Hopefully, Liz
