  1. The Wagon Wheel Coffee Shop on Aurora (47th?) is empty and without signage.
  2. This might be published somewhere, but I found it hand written and stained. 6T white miso 1/3 C sugar 1/4 C Mirin 1/4 C Sake (4) 6 oz. black cod fillets Marinate 2 hours to overnight. Cover tightly in refrig. Broil 3 minutes each side - or don't turn, but watch that it doesn't burn (lots of sugar in there.) You might want to roast it at 450 degrees for about 10 minutes, no turning required. (Standard cooking per inch of fish.) Fabulous.
  3. I have tried many. They don't make me crave pastry (thankfully since they are too close), but they do a good job with cookies and tarts, and breakfast pastry. And gelato - they have the caldo right now, which I am not greatly fond of, but might strike a chord for some - kind of mousse like, not so cold. They also are baking panettone. I like the small cookies best. Some just melt in your mouth. These are Italian, not French or American type sweets.
  4. Gelatiamo (3rd and Union) got a new pastry case and the items inside look like presents - large and small. Gelato cakes, chocolate mousse cups, semifredo...they have really grown as a specialty shop. All made on premises.
  5. Not sure, but many of the main people stayed on. The bakers, chocolate/pastry guy, and management.
  6. Oh, good find! I like their tea, didn't realize they were doing this too.
  7. To the rescue: Mighty Leaf
  8. Go now - 8 days open and they were fully booked for dinner. Snagged a couple of seats at the bar and enjoyed a quick pre-theater meal. Like she (Lauri) cooked at Matt's - you will find fresh, almost comfort, food. Entrees tend towards a meat with interesting sides (sweet onion bread pudding, beluga lentils...) a bit of greens, and heavenly sauce - can you say calvados quince for the pork tenderloin? Entrees in the $12-22 range, most in the high teens. Short happy hour, wines by the glass, starters and mains. Didn't see the desserts. Modern, comfortable room. Sparkling staff. You might also recognize partner Peter - he worked at Matt's some years ago, along with other jobs.
  9. This is the Essential Bread people's place, no? I was wondering what happened to their name. A local ahead of her time, and occasional teacher: Heavenly ← My, kind of, mistake. I didn't realize that when Essential was sold, they parted company with the chocolate company. Is it true that the chocolates sold at Essential are made at Essential and that the 3400 Phinney is completely a separate thing?
  10. tsquare: I'm sorry that I have strong feelings about things that are pretentious enough to proclaim themselves as being more then what they actually are in reality. If there are any contradictions, toward my being objective they are welcomed. My postings about this subject when the original Tutta Bella opened can easily be accessed on that thread. My disappointment with it's expansion are also now on record. I have never made any comments about the other places that are self proclaimed as being authentic Neapolitan Style since none of them aspired to being the real thing with official cognizence. The real thing is indeed very delicious and consistantly so, especially for the dough and crust. Irwin ← Hey I was joking. I've had one Tutta Bella pizza. It didn't seem worth the drive to me.
  11. wesza, tell us how you really feel.
  12. Dangerously close to mine as well. Stopped in this noon for the jambon et fromage which, as you reported, was superb. Can't wait to stop in on the way to work for a brioche and coffee. You're absolutely right, LEdlund, this is very, very dangerous! But then again, I enjoy flirting with danger. ← me too. I mean, dangerously close...maybe that's where I am headed now.
  13. No time soon. Expect that site will see redevelopment.
  14. I haven't been in a long time, but isn't Le Fournil similar? Or even Le Panier? Did drop in to the newly remodeled Biofournil, now Boulangerie Nantaise. Doesn't resemble this at all - more like a 80's version of a french cafe, but more cafe friendly than before (it was originally envisioned as a wholesale bakery with limited retail sales.) The goods remain the same, with perhaps more lunch options.
  15. Maybe better than "Happy Endings"!
  16. Beat you to it - see November 10 post. I believe it is going lounge style. Part of the current wave in Belltown and beyond. Tough space really. Bad makeover - hope the new guys fix it up.
  17. Mighty Leaf is wonderful. Also like Numi Tea
  18. Zaina and the new Falafel King for whatever suits the mood. Market Grill blackened salmon. Salumi... something from Dahlia Bakery Catfish at Matt's Reuben at Persimmon those little bites from The Spanish table panini from Gelatiamo (they are all the way up to $4.95 now) do the green eggs and ham on crumpet from Crumpet Shop count? I keep driving by The Grinder after hours. Must try it one of these days. Fu Man too!
  19. This is the Essential Bread people's place, no? I was wondering what happened to their name. A local ahead of her time, and occasional teacher: Heavenly
  20. The web site says they sold the Lynnwood place but they are active in Everett.
  21. Now open for breakfast and lunch pastries, sandwiches (very French), desserts, and espresso...
  22. The sad thing is, Cascadia has a $25 dinner every night of the year (excepting holidays and when they are closed) so they are used to diners ordering that type of thing. I would just avoid it during the promotion as the place does get crushed. I have to admit I didn't do a single meal of the promo type last month, though I attempted a lunch at E&O, and had a bite at the bar at Zoe. I also noticed Union didn't do the business they have in the past when they tried to compete with this. I did go to La Medusa for Couscous night. Wednesday's $25 three course meal. Pretty good, not too busy, a nice change of pace.
  23. Traditional - Saito (Belltown, but calm) Non-traditional - Mashiko (West Seattle, a bit funky, an egullet favorite) High Style - Nishino's (Madison, beautiful, can be expensive) Also, Chiso (Fremont) and the place in "Tangletown" that I can never remember by name. You may get some more specific suggestios if you add ambiance, price, or part of town that you desire.
