    Lunch! (2003-2012)

    Turkey Paninni.
  2. OK, its not a restaurant, but there is a "lunch truck" serving great Mexican food. They are parked between 9th and 10th on Rt 30 in Coatesville from Thurs-Sunday. Their English is very limited (as is my Spanish) but the food is delicious and has a home cooked quality to it. Here is what they serve: So far I have tried the Cubana (sandwich): and I recommend their Tripas (Tripe) and Carnitas tacos...just amazing, especially the Tripas.
  3. Scrambled Eggs and Thai Spiced Tuna on a Bagel w/cheese
  4. How about walking in the Latin district and eating from one of the stalls there? Pretty cheap and good "ethnic" food.
  5. Seanchai, You already have some good advise from some very knowledgeable people. If an attempt to persuade you to at least swing by Reading Terminal Market, I submit a link from my blog on RTM, which has some pics of the place. Hope you enjoy your stay. Cheers Percy

    Crepes--Cook-Off 23

Wow !! Did you smuggle some in for me Philadining?
  7. It looks like cumin, but it is fennel seeds. Did it also have some brightly colored pieces? If so, there are called wadiali, which is candied fennel, covered in a sugar coating.
  8. New decor of Tifcos The wok stir-fried fish
  9. Alinka, you are not the only one having breakfast, but since I was in Bermuda last week, allow me to play catch-up: Fried egg with chicken maple sausage Maitake and scrambled egg(beaters) Eggbeater Omlette (stuffed with something, but I don't recall what)
  10. Enjoyed both episodes on India, but I have to say that the section on Bombay (Mumbai) barely scratched the surface of the vastly diverse culinary treats it has to offer. Out of curiosity Tony, did you get to try any Parsi dishes while in India (particularly Bombay)? Cheers Percy
  11. Went there for lunch today. The decor has been updated and it seems like a few more tables might have been added. They do seem to be short on knowledgable wait staff - the waitress I got was friendly, but had trouble making recommendations on spicy dishes and actually pointed me to the pan fried dumplings when I inquired about the spicy noodles. Unfortunately, the complimentary tea and some of the usual suspects from the menu (e.g Cumin Lamb) seem to be missing. I ordered the wok stir-fried fish, which came out sans the dried chilies Tifco was so famous for. However, this was not the end of the world and a little bit of chili garlic sauce fixed this. On the way out, I asked the (new?) owner whether they plan to carry more spicy dishes and she said that since she has a new team, she wants to introduce the new dishes slowly. Cheers Percy P.S: Pics will follow later.
  12. My wife likes DK as well (especially the popovers) and so we go there every few months. We also noticed a slight difference in their dishes on our visit a few months ago, but wanted to give the chef some time to work out the wrinkles. I don't recall all the appeitzers on the menu (my wife always gets the shrimp coctail), but I am glad they are expanding the menu. I wish they would expand the main course as well. The items seem to be the same ever since we began visiting the restaurant 5 years ago. Cheers Percy
  13. Philadining, can you drive by and pencil in "attentive staff" under the "Now hiring" sign?
  14. Hmmm...guess where I am heading over the weekend?
  15. Both the Tuna and the Halibut seemed fresh. The Halibut was cooked well (not overdone). The only minor complaint would be the size of the piece of fish, which is much smaller that what is served for a similar price ($25) a few doors down at Majolica. Only other recommendation is not to pair a porcini crusted Halibut with a strongly flavored hummus, which over-powers the delicate fish.
  16. By coincidence, I happend to dine at the black lab this evening, where I ordered. Tuna Tartare with seaweed salad Porcini dusted halibut with hummus, basil oil and mashed potatoes I was very pleased with both items. Usually I pop in for a burger for lunch, so this was a good change. Sorry, only had my phone camera with me and like more phone cameras, it sucks.
  17. Fifth floor was good, but I prefer the meal at Fleur de lys. Though the pace of the Fifth Floor was better....Fleur de lys took too long to send the dishes out.
  18. Unfortunately I don't remember the name of this place, but Pancho Villa's sounds about right (its right off the pier a block or so north of the Ferry Plaza). While nothing is San Francisco is particularly cheap, I think these shrimp tacos were like $8.50 or so...if memory serves me.
  19. Day 4: Chinatown and the Fifth Floor Went to a Chinese bakery in Chinatown to get a BBQ pork bun and a rose black bean moon cake (only had a bite) Look what else I passed by...the (eGullet) famed Wok Shop !! Had to stop in and take a look....ohhh I wish I had more space to lug a wok back. For lunch, I stopped by Taqueria El Zorro (308 Columbus Ave) and got a Fish Taco and Beef taco - This is a hole in the wall, but probably the closest thing to homemade Mexican food I have tasted. Later that night went to the Fifth Floor in the Palomar hotel and had the Seasonal Tasting Menu consisting of Amuse Bouche #1 - English pea and asparagus puree (?) Amuse Bouche #2 - Lobster and shrimp mousse with tarragon (?) ZUCKERMAN’S FARM ASPARAGUS BUTTER POACHED LOBSTER TRUFFLE GLAZED SQUAB BREAST RIB-EYE OF PAINTED HILLS BEEF (Meyer Lemon?) SORBET WARM VALRHONA CHOCOLATE CAKE Had the wine pairing too but still waiting for the Sommelier to email me the list of wines. Day 5 - Thai and French Lunch was at a Thai BBQ place across from Mascone West, from where I got Thai BBQ pork and a Thai iced tea. Dinner was at Fleur de lys on 777 Sutter. I appologize for the poor light quality, but I was seated in the middle of the room and didn't want to disturb the other dinners with my flash. I got the 4 course tasting menu and wine pairing Amuse Bouche - Eggplant gratin Degustation of - Chilled Salsify Vichyssoise and osetra caviar - Warm oxtail consumme glazed with foie gras - Hot maine lobster bisque with sweatbread "croutons" (the best lobster bisques I have had and the "croutons" were extremely crispy). 2004 Trimbach Riesling Hawaiian pink shrimp with fennel pollen 2004 Clos Saron Tickled Pink Rose Colorado lamb sadle 1999 Chateau de Lamarque Grand Marnier Souffle 2003 Domaine Lafarge Muscat
  20. How could I spend 5 days in San Francisco without checking out the local restaurant scene? Day 1: Dim Sum, Mexican On my first day, I strolled along the financial district to the Ferry Plaza where they had a farmers market over the weekend. The had great little stands selling nuts, fruits and this award winning olive oil. On the way I passed the Mexican place which seemed to be getting ready for the lunch crowd and I popped in to grab a shrimp taco Later on that day, I went to the famous Yank Sing for Dim Sum. The dumplings with shrimp were very fresh and had generous portions of the shrimp. Their special pork (filled with broth) dumplings. Day 2 : Coffee, Pastries, Hot Dog and Greek My second day started out with an amazingly good cappuccino and almond tart Lunch was a Fatt Dog Dinner was at Kokkari Restaurant, a greek place which is quite popular and usually packed. Appologize for the lighting in advance. Grilled octupus Grilled lamp riblets Delicioussss pork with beans Day 3: Basque cusine Started the day with walnut bread and coffee Early dinner at Piperade, which is famous with foodies for its basque cusine. Dungeness crab salad Warm piquillo peppers with goat cheese Warm sheep's milk cheese and ham terrine ....more to follow....
  21. I had meals at Yang Sing, Kokkari, Piperade, Fifth Floor, Fleur de lys, and a few local places, which I will post in the California thread when I get a chance.
  22. Hey Parmhero, I too was in San Francisco last week. Although I did not make it to Tartine, here is some of what I did have for breakfast: I tried to go to Cafe de la presse, but the it was closed So I went to this small cafe a block from there and got what I thought would be an OK cuppacinno and almond tart, but this was one of the best cuppacinno I ever had !! The next day I went to the bakery in the palace hotel and got a walnut and cream cheese bread.
  23. Galaxy does not ring a bell but all the "Desi" stores/restaurants are in a 3-4 block radius, so just park and walk around.
  24. Oak tree road is right off Rt 27 near the Metropark train station. You can easily get there from the NJ Turnpike or Garden State Parkway. All the restaurants are in strip malls within walking distance of each other. Parking is a bit of an issue...be careful where you leave your car.
  25. handmc, Are you sure the address is 735 Lincoln Hwy? Google maps showed that is near the airport and when I took a ride down there this weekend, all I saw were some residential homes in that address range. Should I have gone West from the intersection of Rt 82 and Business 30? Cheers Percy
