I agree with Bux, this is a solid first showing. And I concur with Bloviatrix that Bruni sounds like an eGulleteer. Thats a good sign.

Quiche freezes fine, but put it in a freezer bag and wrap it good with aluminum foil, the heavy kind.

Went to the TJ's in Westwood today. Bought 4 packages of Usinger's pre-cooked brats. I noticed they had the Usinger Knockwursts as well, but I didn't buy any -- I'm not normally a huge fan of pork/beef combos in a hot dog. I either like an all pork sausage or an all beef, I'm a bit strange that way (although, I admit to liking some pork/veal combos like Zweigles) Are these any good?

By the way, I like the Trader Joes stuff a lot, but its "murkier" than the POM stuff -- its not filtered and it may be even a little more tart than POM. However, for the price, you can't beat it -- and I like the fact that it is shelf stable. Goes great with seltzer or ginger ale.

Wow, this is getting fugly.

Its their take on an M&M, except the candy shell tastes like any number of the flavors that the jellybeans are.

Repeat after me. Thank God we are getting a Fairway. Thank God we are getting a Fairway. Thank God we..

Interesting how Food and Wine got such an advance scoop on Alinea and ChefG's departure from Trio. Now, why didn't he tell us first? He had to have told them months ago for it to make print production deadlines.

I really don't understand. Wegmans would make a MINT in Paramus or in any of the other Bergen County towns. I mean the last time I checked, isn't Bergen one of the wealthiest counties in the US? Morristown? East Hanover? Why the hell do they need a Wegmans? These are the kinds of people that eat at chain restaurants! Have you guys seen the crap that passes for most restaurants on RT 10? (okay, maybe not Lou Reda's place. And I like Penang in East Hanover) Okay, the people who live in Paramus eat at chain restaurants too. Lots of them. I just need to vent.

because we got a fucking ikea, that's why. how much cheap swedish furniture does one county need anyway?!?? Fucking Medium-Density Fibreboard Swedish crap! Give me my goddamn Zweigles Hotdogs!!!! (ok, I like Ikea's meatballs and buy them frozen in huge bags. So sue me.)

Dammit, why won't they put one in Bergen County?

I'm sure this is a reaction to Cruzan's highly popular flavored rum line. And actually, their packaging looks very similar.
-
Maybe the older stuff. But I'm not really impressed with what Cuba is churning out these days. Havana Club is not the rum it used to be and Matusalem Anejo Superior is gone forever. If you compare HC7 from say 3 to 5 years ago with a bottle from a recent bottling, they aren't the same rums. Cuban rum is wildly inconsistent now. I truly hope to see Democracy restored in that nation so at least some serious enterprising company can restore the quality levels seen in the past.
-
It must have some distribution issues in LA. In the NY area, as well as in Florida, Brugal Anejo is pretty easy to get, considering the large Dominican population here.

I don't know about you, but I like a good 3lb-4lb lobster or a 2lb steak on occasion. And beleive it or not, I've seen the Portuguese on family outings and special occasions eat these in Ironbound just as readily as the tourists.
-
Lobels is truly, truly awesome stuff. If I could afford it I would buy from them all the time. Here are some pics from a Lobel tasting dinner I attended at Morell's wine center in NYC: A slice of Lobel Filet Mignon A slice of Lobel Hangar Steak A slice of lobel Wagyu

I had asked the proprietor of Mediterranean Manor about the lack of the salad bar, and she told me that the main reason why they killed it that very few of the hardcore patrons were eating it anymore -- they went straight to the meat, and the restaurant was wasting money on all this food nobody wanted. I wonder if its an Atkins thing. In any case, at the $15 per person they are charging for nonstop meat, I'm not gonna complain about the lack of a salad bar.
-
See, Mediterranean Manor doesnt even bother with that salad bar crap anymore. After they re-did the place, they yanked it because that stuff largely went to waste. The Brazilians are there for the meat -- nothing else. Now they bring stuff to you at the table -- really good french fries, fried sweet plantains, black beans and rice, and bitter greens sauteed with garlic (really good) to go with the meat. If you want more, they bring you more. When I see a large salad bar at a Rodizio joint, it usually means to me the meat is going to suck -- this is the case with Green Fields in River Edge, which I totally refuse to go to anymore. I'd rather drive to Newark.

DO NOT BRINE KOSHER POULTRY!!!!

I think any of them will be of interest, at least to wine collectors in the US, as Prioratos are few and far between. The majority of them are not avaliable in the US.

I beleive the oldest surviving restaurant in the US is Fraunces Tavern in New York City (1762) but it wasn't continuously operating. The oldest continuously operating Chinese restauraunt in NYC under its original owner (as in the guy who opened it, not his family) is King Yum (1953), a Polynesian-Chinese place in Queens. He's owned it for 51 years. The oldest continuously operating Chinese restaurant in NYC, Wo Hop (1938) is run by its original owner's son.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4724461/ This was written back in April, but I think it slipped thru the cracks. Given the upcoming celelebrations I think this might be of some interest. What are your favorite foods from Normandy? For me, it has to be Calvados and Cidre Bouche -- although I have never had a Normandy lobster. This page also has some older articles that are interesting as well: http://www.dininginfrance.com/normandy.htm

Its amazing how this very same thread gets re-posted every few months.

Living so close to Ironbound (its a 30 minute drive) I see no reason to go into NYC and eat at Plataforma. Rodizio is supposed to be salty -- it is what it is. That being said, my favorite place to eat it in NJ is Seabra's Mediterranean Manor, on Jefferson Street in Newark. BTW I have also heard that Seabra's Rodizio is not as good as Mediterranean Manor, which is considered to be more upscale (they recently underwent an extensive rennovation). Be it that it may, I've never eaten at Seabras Rodizo.
