hi all just tried some of the macarons from PAUL I'm please to announce they are really good and cheaper then all the rest. They are a little smaller sized and less sweet but that just means you can eat more of them before you feel blotted hahaha

well just got back from Paris again and managed to get to a few of these veggies restaurants. Entre Ciel & Terre is no longer there its been replaced by a place called Lemoni but it wasn't open when we got there on saturday night, looks like a weekday venue only. ------------------------------------ Tried to find the le soleil gourmand but couldn't even find the road. ------------------------------------ the only veggies restaurant i got to was Le Grenier de Notre Dame. The place is small and we sat next to the computers in the side room that is an internet cafe???!! Anyway that was rather strange as we got the humming and strange glow from the computer screens. Anyway the food was pretty good the moussaka , and paella were good sized and pretty tasty, the veggy lasange was ok but not too exciting and teh veggy fritteres were pretty good if over salted. The only thing that spoilt it was, we had 3 waitresses that served us that night 1 was french and the 2 others where chinese and the two oriental (chinese/vietnamese?) waitress were brusque boarding on rude. They never smiled once, looked very annoyed when we asked what some dishes were, and when we tried to get their attnetion they just simply turned and walked away. What really annoyed us was that one of them bought over the bill after the main course when we were just comtemplating having dessert and before we had time to even breath she had turned and wallked off. The food is ok but the service is very poor. ------------------------------------------ Although La Duree is a tea house more then a restuarant, we did have a very nice omelette with mushrroms, gruyere, herbs and asparagus and a very large salad of rocket, beans, and caramelised vegs. well thats it on the veggy front for now. Will hopefully get to some others when i'm in pris next.

I think you maybe talking about culinary theatre. A japanese teppanyaki restaurant like Benihana where watching the chef sizzle the food infront of you, definitely wets your appetite. for instance i never liked eating courgette until i ate it cooked on a teppanyaki in benihana and i still only eat courgette at benihana.

;) heheh steamed fish eyes:) haven't eaten them since i was a kid. They meant to be very good for your sight and i'm not joking. Just for the benefit of the non initiated the eye ball after steaming becomes this little solid white ball it doesn't have any taste of its own but it has a interesting chewy multilayered texture rather like chewying on a firm polystyrene ball I also like eating apple seeds. Golden delicious or granny smiths, the seed have a almond taste. deep fried sweet prawn heads are delicious. deep fried fish bone crackers!!! hmmm....

might be a silly question but what type of breadcrumb are you using?

Mange on Greycoat Place is really good used to work opposite the cop shop and was a regular there (mange not the cop shop) you can sign up for a daily menu email. Another place worth trying is the pizza/ sandwich shop next to Mange. The pizzas are freshly made, tasty and pretty cheap too think its was £3.99 for a 8in parma and rocket pizza last time i was there. They are light on the toppings but the base does shine through. Apart from that Victoria is a wash out for lunch you better off travelling down to west end for food.

cdh you carbon dioxide treatment is mentioned on this link http://www.ava.gov.sg/JAVASCRIPT/carbonMTuna.htm Also different cuts of tuna has different colour the leanest is dark red and the belly is fattier and light pink. Lalitha as long as your food is totally fresh and you have handled it with care you don't need to be afraid of raw food. One of the thing i ask friends i am introducing sushi and raw fish to is " do they like smoked salmon?" if they say yes they should have no problem with raw fish. The fish doesn't HAVE to be sushi grade to be served rare but i think it would be HIGHLY preferable. (ie: yes, if you can get sushi grade tuna use that, if not then you better trust your fishmonger with your health/life tick as applicable ) As with many on this thread over cooking tuna just destroys the flavour of the fish. Yep searing tuna is the best way. Simplest way is just rub salt and black pepper and a little olive oil over the fish, then get your pan smoking hot, drop in the tuna and sear from anywhere between 30 seconds to a maximum minute, turn over and repeat. Serve with your fave veggies and a lemon wedge Or if you are a pyromaniac like me you can use a blowtorch ;)

hi all I'm off to Versaille Palace tomorrow and looking for recommendations for a vegetarian restaurant or a place that has a vegetarian selection. A nice cafe that has a good salad would be more then appropriate as its is only lunch:) Had a quick search of the forum and only got two hits for Versaille. Any help much appreciated. merci.

hzrt8w Posted on Jul 7 2004, 11:47 PM you didn't like steaming it? did you remeber to add a little sesame oil ? and thinly shred the scallion and ginger? anyway an alternative is to pan fry the fillets in a little oil with garlic and ginger until the skin is crispy and pour on the magic mix of sesame oil, soya, scallion if you like slice in a little bit of chilli. but you're right salmon though salmon isn't really a preferred chinese cooking fish.

the genesis of egg roll "In the beginning there were spring rolls and we saw that they were good. Then one day the spring roll wrapper split and the filling came out and we saw that it was bad. As the wrapper had split and it was bad we covered the tear in batter and fried them. As the filling didn't come out during frying we saw that this was good. As the spring roll was cover in batter it was no longer a spring roll. The batter was mostly egg and we named the spring roll with the tear covered in egg batter, a egg roll and it was good. " I think thats probably how the egg roll came about. I remeber making spring rolls for my takeaway as a kid and always ended up tearing a few of the wrappers so we just took a bit of batter and smothered the tear in it before frying them. Probably someone did the same with theirs but instead of covering the tear just dropped the whole thing in the batter, and the rest is history. I think a lot of western pseudo-chinese food started from mistakes like Crispy aromatic duck.

hi all, while i was in France a few weeks ago, a friend of a friend was raving about a popoular ice cream palour called AMORE in St Germain does anyone have the address? And if you been is it really that good? thanks :)

yep the chickens isn't a work of art but its better then KFC!! btw there is a K10 takeaway and kaiten sushi restaurant in Moorgate and if you like japanese you got to try Noto on London Wall.
-
anyway just to redeem myself in fisherman's eyes every Friday i take a 20 minute walk from the Barbican to Borough market for lunch and grab a freshly made venison burger or a freshly cooked chicken salsa salad wrap with a freshly squeezed organic fruit juice sigh... if every town had a Borough market think how happier and healthier we all would be

no offence taken the reason why anyone is on egullet is because we are passionate about food But also at the end of the day we are only talking about food and as the saying goes, one man poison, another mans blood. I'm sure even the most ardent foodie amoung us have craving for junk food once in a while, can;t appreciate the good without the bad man can not live by caviar alone ;) Anyway to your point about spotty teenagers with junkie chickens. I take exception to your spotted teenager comment as if not for the grace of god go quite a lot of us Your chicken point is valid but the problem with working in the city is that the food available for lunch is somewhat limited and i think i can count on one finger the number of places that actually do a healthy, organic, tasty and reasonably priced lunch (ie: degustibus) If there was a deluge of good places i wouldn't have even walked into safeways. Anyway the majority of food chains and independent probably get their ingredients from a handful of supplliers like brake bros, etc and the overriding concern for them is profit so i think you will be a very obsessive person to be able to avoid intensively farmed anything in London. Hmm.....i feel a new thread coming on, list all the places in London that do 100% organic food.
-
yeah its called Pham Sushi, quite good quality. The chef in there is meant to be ex-nobu, not sure if thats still true. hmmm... while i'm at it might as well list all the other places i think are ok in EC1 for lunch Noto, London Wall - which has tasty and silly sized lunch portions. Carluccios cafe, Smithfields - busy at lunch go early for table. Apium, Smithfields- Chinese version of Wagamama. Ekachai, Liverpool Street - Pacific rim food quite tasty. S&M cafe,Liverpool Street - trad sausage, mash and gravy just go for the traditional selection the rest look interesting but are lacking in flavour. Square Pie, Spitalfields market - Large and tasty pies, mash and peas. K10 sushi, Moorgate - best kaiten sushi in London Bleeding Hearts, Farringdon - Some of the best French food i had for the price. Think this would be a good way for this thread to continue in just list all the places you had lunch in and think is good.
-
He sold wagamama leaving hakkasan, busaba eathai and yauatcha. Think Anda was a bad idea never actually read a glowing report of it. Think he will probably stick to oriental food from now on its what he does best. I'm waiting for the high end korean, vietnamese and sushi bar from him.
-
For those in EC1 this may sounds like a wierd recommendation but there is a Safeways(Morrisons) in Whitecross Street behind the Barbican that has a very nice rotisserie, sandwich bar, salad bar, deli, pizzeria. A whole rotisserie chicken is £2.99 and a 8 in fresh stone baked pizza is £3.79. Their is also a nice chippie down that road.

Hallie Posted on Jul 6 2004, 04:35 AM The Indian place is TiffinBites and it is quite horrible don't go unless you want to spend £7 on 2Tbsp of rice, 2Tbsp of overcooked veg and 4 piece of chicken in a non flavoured bright red gravy. Also the onion bhaji was the most disgusting trumeric stained dry flour grease sponge that i have ever had to spit out. As you gather i feel quite strongly that Tiffin Bites is an insult to Indian cuisine!!! But the containers are quite cute. The Italian place on the other hand Fresh Italy is worth a visit. The food is just pasta and sauce but its good pasta and sauce and the risottos are well flavoured. But the menu is short just penne pasta in a choice of 10 sauces and three risottos they do some soups and salads that i haven't tried. They nice but think you be bored of them after the fifth visit. http://www.fresh-italy.com/ Concerning EAT yeah i think they pretty good for a chain, the pot pies are reasonable tasty although i do think they are a tad over priced.
-
well this is me just generalising but i think if you are making soup then you won't need to seperate the milk and cream. If you making curry you might want to as you usually fry the curry paste in the coconut cream before adding the rest of the milk. As for desserts i would imagine you would want to use just the cream. ;) good luck
-
I think that would be down to the recipe and/or your personal preference. what recipe are you making?
-
guess you never had an anemic UK office canteen sandwich and cup of tea. here comes that price/quality ratio thing again
-
Yep Degustibus is a very different sandwich compared to your run of the mill UK sarnies, thank God!! I think they would be French inspired like PAUL in Covent Garden. There's a thought I wonder if Degustibus has any plans to go franchise? i definitely buy a share of that For me I always work on a simple price/quality x quantity ratio (anyone with more then GCSE maths may correct my hypothesis ) The sandwiches in Degustibus are slightly more expensive then Pret but they are bigger sandwiches, taste twice as nice and you can pick and choose what you want. Also this kind of food proves that healthy can be tasty, although not cheap get what you pay for right? sigh!!! "show me the money!!"

gus_tatory Posted: Nov 28 2003, 12:18 PM Being a British Born Chinese I take great pride in acknowledging the fact that i REALLY do speak English hahaha!!! But the above post reminded me of the fact that mistakes will happen. Being born in the UK, English is my first language and Cantonese is second but if even a BBC such as myself can make the following mistake, what hope does anyone else have?? We recently reprinted 10,000 menus for our takeaway that had a really fatal typo!!! Fried rice with Chicken had turned into Fried rice with CHILDREN!!!!! I'm expecting Dr Lector anytime now, anyone recommend a good Chianti with Chinese fried liver?
