  1. Worth the trip? Aren't the above mentioned in DC? How about Four and Twenty Blackbirds in Flint Hill Virginia? L'Auberge Provencale closer to Winchester than not? It's About Thyme in Culpepper? The RailStop in Warenton? These are all fairly close to me but I would definately ride out for Four and Twenty and L"auberge Provencale. The settings are sweet and the food is great.

    Androuet

There is a cheese shop right on or off Rue de Seine in the 6th where you can have a cheese centered lunch. I cannot remember the name or if it is directly on Rue de Seine itself. They serve salad, occasionally a soup, and your choice size cheese platter plus wine of couse. If you are looking for cheese this is a great little place to go and very reasonable. Felice, you know what place I am talking about, it is right next to the restaurant that serves the plates of Serrano Ham, olives, etc... I am pretty sure it is Rue de Seine it is on. Edited to add: I looked it up on PagesJaunes.fr, it is called Fromagerie 31, 64 Rue de Seine, Paris 75006.

    Chapeau Melon

Felice, Is it normally booked full during the week also? I am there on wednesday night and am hoping I can convince at least one of my crewmembers to go with me, but that is always a last minute thing. It sounds great. I wonder if you should have posted it also! Next time just PM me with any finds...
  4. The Mezze at Kali's court is pretty casual and good. I like Pazo, but if it is a weekend night, forget about casual. Petit Louis Bistro is also good. Charleston is great but quite a bit upscale. For the ultimate in casual try Peter's Inn in Fells point.Peter's Inn This place is a former biker bar with a market menu. It changes every week and they post it on the internet. It was pretty good last time we went.
  5. I bought a large bag of Angelina's chocolate mixture, but I don't know how to make it like their shop! I forgot to ask for instructions and there are none printed on the bag. Can anyone help? I misspelled Angelina in the title, can someone correct it?
  6. I am trying to get a Saturday layover so I can go to one. I went to their Calvados tasting in April, it was great!
  7. NathanM, Thank you! I am not sure of the quality of my foie Gras, I just purchased it in Paris. So I will try the individual seared foie gras example. I have eaten foie gras raw many times so I am not too worried about the safety. We'll see how it goes, again thank you.
  8. I have read over most of this thread and have not found what I am looking for. I have a Foie Gras that I would like to try and cook with the Sous Vide Method. Can anyone here give me a recipe or instructions on how to do this? I know that Foie Gras is what initially got this movement started, so there must be quite a few versions out there. Thanks!

    Starting 'em young

I am also one of those who has let my children taste wine at the table since they were small. They have also gone on vineyard tours in the US and Europe (mostly France). My son can tell you the different gradings of vineyards in France (Grand cru, Premiere, etc). I occasionally will ask my daughter or my son ages 12 & 15 to go down to the cellar and choose a wine for dinner. Will this help them to be more responsible? Well at home it certainly will, and when they mature entirely, I know it will. Now when they get together with their friends (teenagers), we all know how influential peer pressure can be. It seems like 4 teenagers with above average intelligence suddenly start sharing one brain! It is considered cool to get drunk. We have an extensive wine collection and bar, so it is kept locked at all times. At this stage in their lives I am wise enough to know that their friends influence them alot more than I do. It has always been that way and I imagine it always will.
  10. Geordie, you have made me feel much better! It has not stopped raining here! We are going on 9 days now! I just canceled my reservations with Cinc Sentits for Saturday! I feel sorry for the businesses this weather may be hurting! Strange things going on around the world, huh? Different thread or forum for that subject, I guess......
  11. Well, it is nice to have another restaurant, Thierry Burlot + Alain Senderens being the other most notable places, offer more reasonable menus or prices after several years of success at higher levels. Four of us dined there the other day and had the wonderful amuse-gueule of tabouli on top of avocado; firsts of sauteed girolles and herring; mains of male and female ducking (canette and canneton), calamari and the bouillabaisse (no longer confusing called false); nice but chilly cheese, a fine red Bordeaux, and saving the best til last; great desserts of peches de vigne and figs with ice cream. The bill was an easy 99.50 E for each couple. ← John, I am confused here. Did you dine at Le Club de JR or one of the other two? And if so, how was the bill 99.50 per couple if the menu is 55 per person? Thank you for always posting prices, it helps immensely.
  12. Well, my trip had been postponed until the 4th Nov! Not because of the rain, but because 2 of our passports had expired! We travel so often I hadn't bothered to check! Stupid me!
  13. Lucy, your meal looks beautiful as always...but, even though I have eaten chicken kidneys before and I will eat raw Foie Gras, I think I would have to blind test calves kidney! Call it an American thing, even though I grew up eating things like brain fritters, cow tongue, liver, and pigs feet, I can't fathom eating the kidney, especially medium rare. Can anybody help me get past this? This looks like a dish my husband would love! Anna, Amazon usually ships things as they are available even with free shipping. Check on your order status, it may be in the mail already! Mine was mailed out yesterday along with Paula's bookl on Mediterranean cooking.
  14. I would just pick the day you are going to go and rent a car online in the states NOW. Prices are very cheap and most major agencies have rental sites within the Perpherique. Once you get out of the city driving is easy as long as you go fast! Seriously, I would rent the car. Try Budget or Avis for very good prices. Edited for spelling, when is spellcheck coming?
  15. Well between my cookbooks and restaurant guides, my husband is threatening to move out! It may be because there is no room left for him! I usually carry one guide with me in my carry-ons when I travel to Paris and this book with such an extensive list sounds like it may fit the bill. Usually I use Zagat for addresses and because it is so slim and lightweight. But it is always the same-old, same-old with Zagat.
  16. Restaurants are quite dry, but I have to walk off that food! We have had rain here at home for the past 5 days also, after an extremely dry year! Time for the rain jackets I guess.
  17. I am off to Barcelona tomorrow, but I jsut saw the weather forcasts! RAIN! Everyday! Should I jsut cancel? I just spent an awful weekend in Rome where it was pouring! Any suggestions?

    L'Ami Louis

I can see where one may get offended at this reply Pierre. I know you probably meant it tongue in cheek... But it reminds me of an incident in a restaurant, Le Grande Cascade. It was a young lady's birthday ( approximately 16) and the entire famille was celebrating. The father became very drunk, loud, and beligerant. The young lady started crying, wheras his mother, a more mature lady of about 70 something, scolded him and led him out by the ear! The waiters were very apologetic for the scene and truly that is the only loud table I have encountered in Paris and I must say they weren't American and the nice waiters were French.
  19. John You say Le Fute has many restaurants listed, but are they all listed favorably? I know taste is subjective but would you tend to agree with their assesments? I need to buy a new guide and from what you describe this goes beyond the tres popular restos, but I hate carrying another book in my bag unless it is worth the weight.
  20. I am another who bought this book and never really looked too much at it. (Cookbook addict) After reading through parts of this thread, I may try a few dishes also.
  21. This sounds like fun! I just ordered the book. I may be late in starting as my book won't be here for about a week and I won't be back until the 17th. What is the official start up date? And do you have guidelines yet? Thanks!
  22. I almost always book at the last minute. Look up a few restaurants you would like to try and call them that day. There are a few that will be impossible, (Regalade usually takes two weeks for me), but Mon Viel Ami, L'Ourcine, Vieux Chene, Entredgeu, etc...some or all may have reservations. Bon Chance!
  23. Lucy, I thought you said you weren't much of a baker? That looks fabulous and it is exactly as I have been imaging this cake in my mind. Would you mind pm'ing me the recipe's for both your Gateau et la Creme patisserie? I promise I will make it and post it, but not untilmid October. I am off to Rome tomorrow and Barcelona tuesday, I know poor me. Again, pat yourself on the back, it looks so yummy. How was the taste?
  24. Merci Bien pour les recettes!
