  1. A page out my gardening grandpa's book: slice thickly, serve on a crystal plate with a sprinkle of sugar and a dab of Hellman's. Yum! (And ain't we lucky to have ripe tomatoes in November?)
  2. Heidi, it's not like you're hosting a formal dinner party, right? If the skin's too tough to chew, just do a subtle spit, put it on the side of your plate, strip the meat off the next bit and eat. %)
  3. The only thing I like about seasons are the crisp fall days and brilliant leaves, and maybe a fire in the fireplace. That's IT! (The fire's for ambiance, not really for heat!) ETA: ambiance
  4. Kerry, is the little metal cat in the left front a mold, or just a figurine? It's (G-d, I hate this word, but it works here...) precious!
  5. Dejah, that is just (pardon, please) bloody effin' brilliant! A paper towel holder, hm? Wonder if was remarketed from a beer can chicken holder for the winter? It looks perfect for either chore!

    Dinner! 2013 (Part 5)

Bojana, bone marrow sauce? Do tell, please!
  7. Duh! (Insert facepalm emoticon here...) I see my "likes", so I know I read the thread, but I have no memory of it! Great ideas, thanks all!
  8. Given the abundance thereof, wouldn't that be "souper" plesaed? (Runs away, fast.)
  9. Shel_B's produce-store grandpa brings back shades of my truck farm Pop, and my Nana, who thought canned spinach, of all the horrible things, was just the cat's a$$. Truely, is there anything supposedly edible that is nastier? Maybe canned asparagus, but with a good vinaigrette, I can do it! Nothing will ever redeem canned spinach in my book!
  10. All of the squash under discussion here appears to be winter squash. I'm looking for recipes for SUMMER squash like zucchini and crookneck or pattypan that need moisture cooked off, but not boiled. Can anyone help?
  11. Munchymom, where did you get the mozz cheese? I live in Pompano, but I've never heard of a local dairy! It must be close to the county line (Broward/Palm Beach) with a 426 phone exchange...
  12. As a kid, my mom and I lived with her parents on Long Island, NY, where Pop had a truck farm, sold eggs, honey, fresh flowers and squab. Nana made the BEST stuffing for turkey, and Pop's fresh veg. were amazing, especially the corn from the back of the garden.
  13. Damn, here I thought I had it figured out to be Fat Guy;they moved to Plantation a few years ago, and is not THAT far from the beach! Has his own garden, too!
  14. Fer sure, not me! I wouldn't mind, but my digital camera died, my cell camera is from hunger and I rarely cook any more! Sorry, all!
  15. Shel_b, coffee filters are cheap as old chips and are multitaskers. Viva paper towels are great for filters, washable ( or at least rinse-out able ) but not as cheap per each. Coffee filters degrease liquids, keep small things from falling thru the colander when rinsing or draining (consider pastina...), drain berries etc. Viva paper towels have gone thru the wash in pockets NUMEROUS times and survived happily! I rest my case...
  16. Mjx, 125 C seem like a lot of heat for a braise, maybe that's why your pork was dried out? When I braise pork, I just like the liquid to be 'nervous' looking, you know, a little shakey. HTH!
  17. Maybe I'm crazy, but I don't hold with the bitter pith idea. I always zested the lemon and orange for my mom's fruitcake right down to the pulp, as a kid who didn'nt know any better, and she never had a complaint from anyone! What IS bitter are the dividing membranes inside the fruit. Maybe they're what you're tasting?
  18. But run it thru a coffee filter before you use it, to get out residual grit and sand, please. Crunchy soup? Nah!
  19. Lindag, La Croix makes canned, unsweetened flavoured sparkling water, lemon, lime, mixed berries, raspberry peach, etc. Not just sugar free, but totally unsweetened! (Artificial sweetner of any kind gags me, it's sugar or hfcs, etc or nuthin'!) Really good, but not really cheap.
  20. Faux Pas wants a cookie like the Petit Ecolier, but with a chocolate hazelnut coating. Nutella = chocolate + hazelnut, so... %)
  21. Mjx, seems like the rice porridge would come in handy to put in your poor insulted tummy! %) My bad, you said it's semolina, right? Still, mild and easy to digest, though?
  22. I personally feel that Dakki is doing dripping a disservice by putting it below margarine!
  23. Hmmm, how about Le Petit Burre and a jar of Nutella ?
  24. I bought a bundle of bamboo utensils at BBB quite a few years ago. They came in a mesh bag and have held up exceedingly well, despite being used for other things besides cooking, such as correcting errant "housemates" and their overly affectionate (two or four legged) pets... %)
