  1. Got caught up in a volunteer activity today, and the soft shells that I bought and had cleaned ( at about 2pm) never made it to the table tonight...any chance of using them tomorrow? If I have to, I will either panko and fry them for a homemeade spider roll tomorrow, or trash them , but I'm tired and might just lean toward the wasted food decision. If you respond that I have to use cook them tonight, please include appropriate cheerleader -like comments to encourage me to do so.
  2. Wow, so many obsolete song lyrics that Paul and Tommy and Jon and hollywood and EVERYONE knows on first glance..finally, I can recognize something WCW, from NJ, no less!
  3. I spent a large part of the day with a fussy 18month old, and its not very often I am flumoxxed by a child's needs to the point that I can't make them happy...other than my 18 year old daughter, whom I have given up on! anyway, lunch was fussy, nap was fussy, books and lap time were fussy, bath was a slight reprieve, then back to fussy...finally, I set him up in the high chair with a can of chilled fruit cocktail dumped into the tray..grapes removed, of course. He spent an enthusiastic hour sucking on soft sweetened peaches, unnaturally red cherry pieces, and chunks of mushy pear. It was the only truely content hour of his day! And there was no objection when I doused him with little bucket to get the nectar from his hair! So, 18 month old Ty and I agree...it was to hot to eat anything but some cool, sweet fruit!

    Buffets

Fyre, Welcome to e-gullet. I don't share your enthusiam for buffets, but I am impressed by your thorough review..I am sure some buffet afficianados wil appreciate your comments... Have you ever gone to an exclusively sushi/sashimi japanese restaurant, and how does it compare to the buffets? It seems like you prefer sushi styled rolls without raw fish...do you like those versions with raw fish as well, and do any of these buffets serve raw fish? I would think that they're turnover would be extensive enough to asure freshness...but at the pp price, what kind of quality do they have? Has anyone ever gone to a sushi buffet?
  5. Glenn, remember, Bounty was the quicker picker upper...but you're not looking for speed! I think that the cook and blot method works fine, and removes much of the grease..just get agressive, fold up a PT and really BLOT it, press down, and fold and unfold the PT for a clean surgface..
  6. My mother is bewildered as to why I make my own pasta... I asked for the attachement for Christmas last year, and she just can't imagine it...wait until I ask for the sausage attachment for my birthday!
  7. What the Fuck? Who should get a real life? Kim, you ain't had a few too many have you? Yes, I did have a few too many and I apologize. I am as guilty of intolerance as everyone else. I was out of line and my comments were inappropriate. I personaloize this issue too much, which is why I should have bowed out long ago. Beans and Abby, please consider this a sincere apology. I made personal attacks that were unwarranted and undeserved. I would edit the post,, but its already been repeated. I think I have requested keyboards get breathalyzers?
  8. Glad you qualified that! I work in a job that I'm expected to throw a party for all that enter into bar and yes that does entail drinking on the job. *hiccup* really, this is just as effective as Fat guy's post about the LML and CWS fight... but . beans, you are nearly as tiresome as CWS. Get a real life. You are nearly a grown up. and abbey, really, do you feel the litle smiley drnkers you post ? Are you over 21? WHY won';t egulleters of a certain age just BE eguleters of a certain aaaggghh. forget it I loose.
  9. CWS, so you really think that people are hunting down your posts in order to annoy you? Can it possibly be that your adolescent behavior starts to wear on people, and your attempts to be one of the "cool bad boys" are getting mighty tiresome? It's not all about you. A Scottish chef brings up a point that is missing in a lot of the posts..there are a LOT of chefs who DON'T partake...it seems like for the last three pages or so, many posters have been working under the assumption that it is a given that every kitchen works in an atmosphere of drugs and alcohol, and yet there have been a number of posts claiming otherwise. I don't have a problem with a garde manger who smokes pot before, during or after a shift..I guess I have a problem with the " Hey, guys, 'm all fucked up and so I'm cool like you! " kind of mentality. Actually, this is a sad thread in many ways.
  10. Ok, just to update everyone: I have made some calls to centrally located potential recreation areas for this event. Once I get prices and details, I will post the estimated price range. If there is a general consensus that the price and location is acceptable, we can formalize it all with Fink. Now, the time frame: How does eveyone feel about early/mid September?

    Rats

Yes, they are..if you are planning on dinner or lunch, you should budget some time to walk the grounds as well.

    Rats

A search of the NJ forum should give you some info and past reviews. The relevant info: owned by Steward Johnson, the artist and band-aid heir. located on the Grounds for Sculpture, in Hamilton near 195. The restaurant was disigned to resemble a ship/french chateau/village street.Named after the character in the Wind and the Willows. The gardens were designed to reproduce Monet paintings. In addition to the main restaurant, there is a Moroccan themed bar/casual eating area called the Kabal Kafe. Now some opinions: Eric Martin is a talented, well trained chef, with a great staff. Front of house is above average, with a few stellar exceptions, and a few not ready for prime time players. The food is wonderful, seasonal, and inventive, without being predictable OR over the edge. The bar is great, the martinis are wonderful, and the casual place makes a authentic tangine. Another opinion, I hate when people do that "K" thing with the word Kafe. Rats is not cheap. The wine llist is dreamy.
  13. Oh, very simply, whenever the subject of lawsuits, and their frivolty come up, someone is going to mention the McDonald's coffee incident. As FG mentioned, it is so ingrained in the public's mind, with inaccuracies and all, that it has become the stick by which all liability litigation is measured!
  14. Not adressing alcoholism, but DWI... a Ruby Tuesday is probably the safest bet...these corporate chains train their staffs about serving intoxicated guests, and ways to limit drunk driving. A local tavern might have more of a "wink and nod" kind of approach.
  15. it's interesting how there is a reference to the cost effectiveness of the community ..with the current budget situation, it's either raise taxes or find ways to bring in the bucks...and that's a lot of bucks! No wonder they are going to sell another one soon!
  16. Klc, thanks for a great post. As they say: WORD.
  17. Great photos, thank you. And I would encourage anyone to check out the link to Bobolink's website at th e bottom of curdnerd's signature. Their website does a wonderful job of expressing their philosophy and the wonderful reasons for their approach to cheese... and to parenting, too.
  18. I think the RTerminal Market is a good choice, too. I enjoy putting together a lunch at the various stands..I wish that some places served smaller portions, so that you could put together a "tasting" of sorts of different foods. Regarding shopping there, I've also been impressed with some of the cheeses and fish...but am usually in town for other reasons, and don't have anywhere to stash purchases. Last spring, I bought some beautiful shad roe during my lunch there..could not resist the glistening or the price...and then, had to beg a receptionist to use the conference rooms' refrigerator while I spoke at the "Political Advocacy for Non Profit Organizations" Seminar. I'm talking voter registration and GOTV, thinking, " hope no one mistakes my roe for their leftover hoagie!" If you prefer ethnic, I've been to quite a few above average Vietnamese places right near the convention center...sorry, don't recall the names, but I recognize the awnings!
  19. Drug tests don't distinguish between use and abuse. Agreed/ That's why I said this a few posts back: "I'd like to see drugs legalized, too. I'm not all set on having everyone pee in a cup. But I don't like to see drug use glamorized and excuses made for its use..and while CWS's marriage might have fallen apart due to "passion for the industry", a lot of other marriages fell apart because of the lifestyles so eloquently described on this thread. . " My responses have never been to the part of the thread that meandered towards the legality of the issue..I have always been commenting and responding to the portion of this thread that has discussed the accountability of the drug abuser, and the ramifications of the abuse. It's been an interesting conversation, btw, and I thank everyone for helping to create an interesting thread, and Craig for introducing the topic. edited to add that's its also been nice to visit the UK, if only in cyberspace!
  20. Yes, order extra t-shirts..I think you'll find a market for them, and it can help defray the costs!
  21. Tahnk you for your response..I think your prices are very reasonable, and I hope it all comes together.
  22. Obviously. The film is "Reefer Madness." Yeah, I had some pretty dreamy boyfriends!
  23. Quite. But I"m concerned that it is so readily accepted by so many chefs, and even bragged about..especially by the "testosterone" chefs on the current badboy circuit..both in the media and at e-gullet. And for every one or two functioning abusers, there are a hundred messed up, broken abusers. Yes, okay, totally made up statistic. But hopefully you know what i mean.
  24. I've tried to be specific and refer to drug abuse, which in my mind is different than drug use. Certainly, not all drug use leads to drug abuse. Regarding probability, I don't know what the stats are that a drug user will become a drug abuser...I was always making out when "Marijuana Madness" clips ran at the drive in... However, I'm guessing the the probability that drug ABUSE leading to personal life problems is, well...I'd put my money on the cocaine. C'mon...ther are not a lot of 40 year old guys out there talking about how helpful and wonderful drug abuse was for their careers and their relationships...
  25. If it wasn't such a sad commentary on customer service, it would be funny.
