  1. Yes, that's true... interesting that you inferred that... Well, if you thought to add you were both considering the duck, I assumed vegetables were a preference but not an only option. I'm interested because I love vegetables, and have thought about ordering the veg plate, but usually revert to a meat or fish selection...old habits die hard, I guess. Although I am enjoying meat and fish much more as an accompaniement, as opposed to a MAIN dish...I've moved away from the "meat and pots" concept, but not quite into the "no meat at all" style! Glad to hear tht your partner enjoyed the veg plate.
  2. Wow Mark, I knew he graduated but didn't know about all those accolades and awards..congrats! And look, the handsome kid is wearing one of your shirts in the picture!
  3. So... what you're saying is that the opinion that drug use is OK if you don't let it affect your work is silly because drug use will affect your work? Perhaps it's just the flu, but I see some logic weakness in this. what I'm saying is that drug abuse is difficult to compartmentalize, and that if you are not seeing the ramifications of abuse in their professional life, they are feeling it in their personal lives..and that it is only a matter of time before the worlds colide. My initial response in this thread topic was a reaction to the inferrence that "Gordon made him do it", which to me negates personal accountability. I'd like to see drugs legalized, too. I'm not all set on having everyone pee in a cup. But I don't like to see drug use glamorized and excuses made for its use..and while CWS's marriage might have fallen apart due to "passion for the industry", a lot of other marriages fell apart because of the lifestyles so eloquently described on this thread. . And to me, personally, is that part of the glamoritization ( is that a word?) is that in this industry, you can be a functioning abuser... and that's cool and ok. But all too often, the definition of functioning is that "my wife and kids left, I'm hung over every day, I have'nt seen the sun in two years, but hey, I can still turn out a good meal..."
  4. Thank you for the review... it sounds similiar to a favorite french/vietnamese place I enjoy, Origins in Somerville. Just curious, did a non'vegetarian choose the vegetable platter?
  5. Brian, In my opinion, a buffet just isn't "special" enough. I can only speak for myself, but I have a handful of favorite and excellent Indian and So. Indian restaurants that I visit regularly, all with above average buffets...and I go at least once a week. But this is just me personally, and I live in a area that is heavy with Indian population and restaurants. I'd prefer a menu that features distinctive specialties of the cuisine or of the restaurant. I've eaten at Moghul, and thought it was good, but not spectacular. I need to qualify that by saying that I have been learning about Indain Cuisine for only a year, and have a LOOONNNGGGG way to gobefore becoming a knowledgeable reviewer. I think that the suggestions you got here were right on track...Pick a date that works for you, figure out the price including tip and tax, post all the info, and collect the RSVP's.
  6. Interesting, sometimes your first impressions of the meal can change, depending on what you remember..and truthfully, as much as I loved the Crabs,a nd soup dumplings, its this fish head soup that I recall the most distinctly, and enjoyed the most. I'm really glad it was part of the menu..you guys did a great job with that menu, BTW.
  7. Thanks Coquille...hmmm..I really have a way with words!
  8. But I was trying to!
  9. This is really a great thread..look at all the creative descriptions! bananas, onions, truckstops, dead ducks..and Elizabeth, NJ!
  10. Well, we had a cat. Seriously, I feel we were lucky, as it never got to be severe abuse, but it ws certainly the lifestyle, some of the habits etc that were expressed by many on this thread... and I think its important to point out how the lifestyle affects the person ( and their families) as a whole, not just the person as a cook.
  11. But my point was not about parental absenteeism due to work addiction, but due to substance abuse.
  12. Thank goodness there are no generalizations here. that was just and example matthew, no? and i don't think that it's a very far-fetched one either. Perhaps. Perhaps not. We might need to commisson some sociologists and/or anthropologists. How's the eGullet Research Foundation coming along? Speaking for oneself is quite different than creating examples about others. Matthew, FYI, I was speaking for myself. Quite. But the intent was to point out that severe substance abuse can't be "contained" as well as many people think..it spills over into other areas, and then affects the person in every aspect of their life...
  13. I feel that those of you who have claimed that the drug use is ok " as long as it does not affect their job performance" are looking at the small picture...the guy who parties too hard after every shift is sleeping until 1/2 hour before his next shift begins, not spending any time with his wife or his kid or his mother or his hobby or his bills or his gym or his dog....the ramifications extend into his personal life, which will then loop back around to affect his professional life. We had a thread on what determines a chef from a cook..CWS declared it was passion and paying your dues. I said a component was leadership..and this thread illustrates my position pretty well, I think.
  14. Well, any talk of location, price or details is presumptuous...I don't know Fnk, so I am hoping someone will communicate with him and see if he's up for the event!
  15. yes, that's the info on the container..It's so good, its hard to leave it in the fridge, knowing its there for the taking. it's kinda weird to picture buffalo in VT..my only perception of buffalo is from that Kevin Costner movie...
  16. Went to Kim's Kitchen : rare Prime Rib, baby portobellos in garlic, baked potatos with sour cream, humbolt fogg cheese, and lemon sorbet. Sometimes, tradition is the best!
  17. Elyse, I'm not sure if you're serious, and I apologize if it seems I have no sense of humor, or am insensitive..$25 seems very nominal to me...I'd really like to se e if this can come togehter, but if the general consensus is that $25 is too much, I don't think it's realistic to plan anything. Last time I checked, movies and pocorn cost $20! But I would appreciate feedback..
  18. I was poking around my local "gourmet shoppe" yesterday..not known for being cutting edge, but better than average cheeses and a nice selection of imported Italian foods...and I picked up Woodstock Water Buffalo Milk Yogurt..VErmont Maple flavor. WOW! Not sure if this is a common product, and old news to most egulleters..I'm not a big yogurt shopper..I'm a Stonyfield organic kinda gal...but this is great..better than total Greek yogurt...not overly sweet, great texture, and a distinctive flavor. It was $1.99 for 6oz...has anyone else tried this product, and how does it compare in your opinion to other yogurts?

    Dinner! 2003

On Father's Day, sometimes you just need to revert to the classics: Prime Rib, rare. Baked potatoes. Sour cream. baby potabellos sauteed in garlic, butter and lemon. Figs, Maytag blue and store bought lemon sorbet. Lotsa good cabernet. Easy, delicious, traditional and fulfilling.
  20. Working on totally second hand info, from the waitress at my favorite sushi bar, Penang is affiliated with the Edison one. She used to work at Penang in Edison.
  21. I'd like to pursue this as a central Joisey option, but need confirmation that Fink would be willing to travel. I could narrow it down to two or three sites, post the specifics, take pictures, ( or e-mail the pictures to Rachel, since I am imagestation challenged) and you can all decide which one we should pursue. However, I don't want to start making the calls unless we know for sure that Fink will travel.
  22. edited, I meant to add this comment to the Pig Raost thread!
  23. I'm siding with Glenn on this one..if the wait exceeded 20 minutes, the you could have rightly been disturbed that the table continued to remain empty. But put it in context...you're in a bar type atmosphere, its casual...no reservations, etc. This is a Tiger's Tale scenario to me...it's a popular bar in Princeton/Montgomery area, and its all about the wait, the beer, the LACK of reservations...I agree with Rosie, I don't like it when place doesn't accept reservations, but I dont' expect bar/tavern/pub kinds of places to use them, and I'm always prepared to drink and wait!
  24. Well, its hardly Princeton, but there's always Penang--Malaysian cuisine. Two excellent New Jersey locations. Actually I've only been in the East Hanover one, but I've heard that the Edison one is good and that's certainly not outrageously far from ANY of us--its kind of smack dab in the middle, right? Jon, a branch DID just open in Princeton...and my first two luch visits were disappointing..oversauced Chinese to me......However, I've always gone during lunch rush hour, and gotten the "lunch special"...I have a friend, who has a malaysian housekeeper, who has promised to accompany me there after their return from a vacation..in order to learn about the cuisine, and judge it fairly. Also, my son's roommate at boarding school is part Malaysian, and he is staying with us in two weeks, so I am hoping to get his opinion, and his Malaysian mother is picking him up 4th of July weekend..( she is a noted fashion designer, will be in France while I have her son...I think she is famous, I am not up on such things. She is thin, young and beautiful, for what its worth! ) I am hoping to discuss the cuisine with her as well. So I figure, a housekeeper and a jet setter, between t he two I should be able to learn about the cuisine and determine if Panang is the real deal! However, I am really enthused about a central NJ Pig Roast..the location I have in mind is almost dead center in the state..I hope we dont' loose steamon that..but its all up to Fink, whom I have never met! But I'm working on that.
  25. Mark, I'm waiting to see if Lou finds a place for a Fink's pig roast...otherwise, I have a few options I have already looked into...Tje WB family has just put in an offer on a new home, its an old one that needs a lot of work...in Trenton...so I'm not volunteering until I get a better idea of how that's working out. But I'll gladly find a venue for a pig roast! K.
