  1. I've often found this idea curious. If ever I went to an establishment that had an excellent dish, and I asked for and recieved the recipe, I can assure you there were at least 2 things I did not do: 1. I never made the decision that since I had the recipe that I never needed to go to the restaurant again because I could prepare the dish myself. 2. I never took the recipe, invested in an establishment down the block and put them out of business by selling the item myself. This being said I can still understand the reluctance to reveal proprietary information. I still cant believe that Bush guy has not caught on to Dukes nefarious schemes to sell the baked bean recipe...
  2. Are all the other recipes in the eGullet collection? Here's mine. (Make sure your saffron is fresh!)

    Tomato Sandwiches

Alas the cool wet spring has pushed everything back a month here in the northeast. Even the corn is only like knee high.
  4. Actually I kind of liked the way the poached larbballs looked. I bet if you had fried them instead the noodles would have added a nice crunch... Oh yeah, thanks for the ride to Penn Station. Was gratified to see I'm not the only one who obtains gratuitous pleasure from pissing off my GPS unit.
  5. Well, some stuff came up and bonked me back an hour, so it looks like I'll probably get there about 6pm. Don't snarf up all the larb balls & such before I get there!
  6. Some Goslings Black? We could bring ginger beer and do "Dark and Stormy Nights..." Last year Rich brewed his own Ginger Beer for those on our vacation...
  7. I already ordered mine, should pay off in less than a year for half full cans of San Martzano tomatoes I can save...
  8. Sounds like a printed version of eGullet...
  9. Looks like the NJ eGullet BBQ event will be happening here on 21 Sept. at 1:30pm.
  10. I'm stuck on Long Island, 2hrs away. It is true that I could probably catch a train back to Stony Brook around 9 or so. I will think on this. Thanks for the encouragement, =Mark! Yikes! I'm in the same boat, is a 1 1/2 to 2 hour jaunt from the city to my home down on the jersey shore, depending on how subway/train schedules work out. I don't have any pressing appointments on the following day though, except for maybe the lawnmower...
  11. Count me in! Looks like this could be a warm up for the Pig Pickin for a good number of folks. Will have to mull over what to bring...
  12. I've been collecting pint mason jars for years, make for a respectible tumbler.
  13. I used to watch him when I was a kid and did indeed prefer him drunk. I remember an episode where he bounded across the stage, glass of wine in hand, jumped over chairs and vaulted over the counter. He then put his glass down on the counter and proceeded to peel a sheet of plastic wrap from over the top. Now that's entertainment!
  14. When do you figure you'd need to be in bed by? Seems if you are fairly local to the city you could still attend, duck out by 9pm or so and still have time for a decent sleep as well as 4 or more hours of eGulletizing...
  15. Interesting, but the site does not actually indicate how you could order the opener, nor does it list a price.
  16. Well it was announced last month that the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals Overturns Texas Wine Shipping Ban. It appears that the various state regulations on the shipping of wine are on tenuous ground.
  17. New York Times examines the Wine Spectator Awards given to restaurants that pay to apply for them. It appears that over 90% of the establishments submitting for the awards are granted them, and that the magazine makes well over half a million dollars on the application fees.
  18. Uh oh... He said Ahi Tuna...
  19. Skip Georgetown and take the metro down to old town Alexandria instead. Get some good eats at King Street Blues on St. Asaph. Georgetown has become overpriced, overrated and overpanhandled.
  20. Have to delete Navesink Cafe in Red Bank from this list. The original owners lost the lease and the place is now run by the folks who run Rivers Edge up on Broad ST. I had hopes for this place as Rivers Edge consistantly put out imaginative and tasty food. Instead it is pretty much an over priced snack bar. A friend and I recently had a cheeseburger, chowder and drinks and split an order of onion rings... $42 before tip. The view is excellent, but at that price I'll do take out from elsewhere and set up my folding chairs in Marine Park.
  21. Varmint, you mentioned a possible road trip to a local BBQ place a half dozen or so pages ago. This still a go?
  22. I expect to be driving down to my bro Rich's place in Arlington, Va on Thursday, Pick him up and then drive to Raleigh on Friday. Will reverse the process on Sunday/Monday. Don't know which days you'll be travelling...
  23. Does this mean we gotta get up prior to 7am on the 11th?
  24. Let me guess... He named the restaurant for his apparent age?

    Ruth's Chris

They don't? According to their commercials they send all their chefs to apprentice in Italy...
