  1. And you have not experienced Kolkatta unless you had spent a day at the University Coffeehouse and sharing a charu
  2. Praha in '93 was different than one in '98 was much different from one in '02. Every one out to make a quick buck. Relative to the USD it will be more expensive now that it was oon 11/02 - Reason - prices are pegged to the EUR.
  3. I'm sure you have Europe on the CHeap and Europe to Go guides ? The latter essentially written by Harvard students on vacations - The only way you can come lose to 5EUR per meal is staying in pensiones and asking other residents for tips - Trying college /university cafeterias. Many a times local university based usenet groups have useful info too.....
  4. That is what we were made to believe. The Cafe is going to be a temp. affair till the duration of the exhibition.
  5. Free ride, while some of us have to pay $$$$$$$$$$ as annual membership
  6. American Museum of Natural History is going to have an exhibition on Chocolate. Expect to have some featured in the cafe in the museum.
  7. If I can be convinced to haul myself all the way to Little-India in the rain -- It must be something no ? $6 a plate, $4 for Brooklyn Brewery beer Thanks to FG, it was worth a schelep.
  8. Major Events Schedule OK I'lll bear the rain and soggy weather and schelep over
  9. Veda 8 Arbuthnot Rd, Central HongKong Click Here for more details. I totally forgot about this till yesterday, when cleaning old stuff I found the information.
  10. Love it most of the time -- Only once, a beautiful distraction made me pick wasabi instead of hamachi (sp?) without looking down at my bowl -- My head still spins at the thought of what it felt - Never trust those salarymen after a few drinks
  11. Steven, I thought you were the QUALITY meat dude. Plataforma ain't it. One can't eat quality meat everytime can one ? Unless it is EZE, where all and any cut is quality -- Oh! I miss Buenos Aires Most churrascarias stress variety of meat over quality no ?
  12. This did not show up in the Community Assistance Unit's listing of outdoor events ..... hmm !!! looks like Boomberg's cuts are having an impact on up-to-date info. Thanks for the pointer -- Now if the weather just co-operates.
  13. O'reillys Irish pub opposite the Bourse (their Stock Exchange) in BRU (Brussels) on weekends is open till 7 AM (yup! that's correct). They serve a hearty Irish breakfast as a hangover breakfast with a pint of stout
  14. Maybe a new thread on what was served on a recent flight ? I'll leave it to others to start it. My JFK-BRU-JFK few days ago on DL B/E had the following - Appetizer - Pepper crusted Ahi Tuna with shrimp and spicy Cucumber Salad - I bagged that Bread - Plain & Onion rolls - Bagged that too Entree - Marinated mahi-mahi with ginger soy sauce, Jasmine rice and soggy asparagus. Dessert - Ice-cream with caramel and nuts accompanied with Grand Marnier. coming back: Wine - Primitivo di Manduria from Apulia Italy. Bagged the Appetizer and Salad. Entree - Paste in roasted rep pepper cream and chicken - Dessert -- Fruit and Cheese platter with Ferriera Port from portugal.
  15. If the person is truely a novice, and a non-FF/FT the four premier cities - Mumbai,Kolkatta,Chennai and Dilli would cover a lot of ground {sorry If I omitted your favourite city }.
  16. Many more.... Purposely I have excluded five great meals I've had in India - Because, I would have to include my favourite Gymkhana in Mumbai, and also Clubs, which are not really open to general public. Also catered meals in India occasionally rise to very high levels of sublime culinary experience; comparing them would be inappropriate. Dhabas -- With exception to probably deep south, where I had no experience, most of the dhabas I ate and slept at night in, were catering mostly to Punjabi / hindustani {bhayyias as they were called} truck-drivers who plyed the transportation trade all over india. The food in all these places were without doubt excellent but simple fare - cooked by a billu , or a kake , by whose name the dhabas were known. The recipies of the one of two signature dishes probably brought from their home village in Punjab,Haryana or U.P. made them famous in the truck route.... or the National highway segments...... A special mention for sentimental reasons are Pritams, Dadar , Moti Mahal, Old Delhi ad Saturday Club, Kolkatta.
  17. Five of five Coconut Grove, NYC Diagnonally across from Bay Leaf, Coconut Grove opened without much attention given by the press. I went there two day's before opening - then three four times more later in the year. The appetisers - ceviche !! indian style was very bold in using mixture of tamrind water, and lemon - the appam freshly made was really surprisingly similar to what I remember eating in the south - Chettinad Fish (here it was salmon) very similar to varuval (sp ?) For desert it was payasam - not with dal as I was used to but some legume which I forgot to ask. and a pint of Boddington which they carried on draft. Coconut Grove for various reasons did not survive. It was in the two blocks which has had many pretty diverse set of restaurants, so t was not for lack of clientele in that area.
  18. Quick update Sir Anthony Van Dyck was an excellent recommendation. It is in the small alleyway behind a door that opens to the street. One is bound to miss it. They have essentially one seating for lunch. EUR43,50 per was what we chose (Ouch ! those Euro's are killing us who come from this side of the pond) .............more on my BE trip later
  19. Coconut Grove (now defunct) in NYC served Kolivada Machi and Chettinad Fish fried in a light besan batter with tamrind based broth -- oh Well !!!

    Uncle Nick's

Go to the Ouzeria where they are more relaxed - This is why when I am eating solo, I sit at the bar, and no one bothers me
  21. Wow did not know that De Matelote was a starred restaurant -Not that I am enamored, my FFlyer buddy did not mention it -- Sir Anthony Van Dyck is a good suggestion, will ask our hotel to arrange a reservation for us. Thanks

    Joler in NYC

Nice to read sooo many nice things about our city. Very enjoyable read.
  23. No feedback on food in this lovely town ? How about *not* food ? Diamonds !!!!! Would you fly to Antwerp to buy one ? How far would you go to buy one ? [ maybe this will get some discussion, while i fly away manana ]
  24. Most Asian Carriers generally have a better selection as well as allocate more $$ per pax for meal and beverage service. In NYC; LSGChef (an LH subsidiary) caters to most airlines. The airline specifies what they want to pay and what they want included. SQ, if I'm not mistaken has rent a chef in First Class. SR before it went belly up had a very good cheese platter - DO not expect US carriers to improve anything in domestic routes. ANA is going to start on-demand-meal service starting June 1 (as per today's NYT) US Carriers have started charging for alcoholic beverages for coach pax in international routes. NOt to talk about the carnage with their FF programs. It is one of the peeves on Flyertalk for years
  25. I'd rather fly JFK-AMS than JFK-LAX
