  1. My 15 year old son LOVES Piehole. I haven't eaten there yet, but he just goes on and on about it! I'm not sure that this has anything to do with the topic, but I thought I'd mention it....
  2. Sounds like someone else is as annoyed with the Boise Weekly "Best Of" roundup as I am! If you're talking about Le Poulet Rouge I'll have to laugh, they're neighbors of mine. What restaurants does your SO own?
  3. Soyrizo does, it's actually pretty good! I haven't tried the bacon substitutes in a long time, but I didn't think they were very good.
  4. A couple recipes here and here...do they seem close? It's been a long time since I had these, they sound really good.
  5. Huh, I always thought it was there so people wouldn't poop in the urinal.
  6. I got some 3/4 inch thick Saltillo tile from Home Depot; it runs about 90 cents for a 12x12 tile. You can cut it to size with a skilsaw or jigsaw. It does occasionally crack under high heat (over 500), though I've only had one crack and it is still usable. Untreated slate should work fine. Another option is Fibrament, though it's a little more expensive.
  7. I have the Magnum and it's plenty big. I think I need to reload it about once every six weeks, and I use a ton of pepper.
  8. Carob wikipedia entry. The "carob as chocolate substitute" was one of the great lies of the 70's; my mother fell for it, too (though she denies it now ). I did eventually get used to the carob flavor, but I never understood the chocolate connection. I suspect it was a prank that went waaaay too far. Every now and then I see it cited as a miracle ingredient, but it doesn't seem to be getting traction these days, fortunately. Did your wife like them?
  9. You can get it at Amazon: "The Hour". Huh, I just realized I'm drinking a Cosmo (hey, "Sex and the City" is on!) while posting this link. Whoa!
  10. I was just there and I loved it. And just around the corner is Chaat, a little indian place that was really good.
  11. I believe you. In 1991, I got a little bag of asafoetida, double-bagged it and put it in a blue plastic box and stashed it on the stoop of my apartment...I could STILL smell it inside. I finally got rid of it...I still have the blue box, and it still reeks of asafoetida! I bought a little little yellow plastic container of it at the indian market, and it smells fine, so it can be done.
  12. Thanks, Monica. I'm a dork, I googled "Roopaks" instead of "Roopak." Big difference.
  13. Monica, is Roopak's a brand? Google doesn't turn up much...

    Whole fish

It's called "Manifold Destiny." I haven't seen it in years, but it's an amusing read. Turns out it's out of print and fairly expensive. Edited to add link and availability note.
  15. Huh? richards1052 confused hatchery and farm-raised salmon (like a lot of people), but the Times article backs him. How does his argument go "poof," exactly?
  16. National Review Online? From the "article:" Whatever. Not exactly substantive.
  17. Wasn't he griping about not receiving a salary at some point?
  18. Not a myth, according to a friend of ours who's a department head at Eastman School of Dentistry. Many children's enamel is rapidly disappearing. He demonstrates the effect to his classes by leaving a tooth in a glass of Coke; noticable deterioration after a couple of days. Snopes covers this.
  19. Paul, great comments. I agree with you on the pellets for bittering; I always use whole hops at the end, but I generally use pellets for bittering. I get more consistent results that way. I should have noted that in my original comment
  20. I used to make beer from extracts, and it was pretty good, but when I switched to all-grain, it was amazingly good. I kept brewing from extracts, but I'd boil the whole batch - all five gallons. Typically, the kit will advise you to boil 4-6 quarts. The main problem with boiling the whole batch is cooling; a wort chiller is a necessity. Kind of expensive, but worth it. That will dramatically improve your flavor - especially the hoppiness. Oh yeah, and use whole hops.
  21. Just to confuse you further, the "nice" one was formerly sold on QVC. I think that Magefesa just changed styles, and now QVC is carrying the newer models. I don't think you should judge whether or not it's "nice" based on whether or not QVC is selling it. I happened to buy the 8 L and littler one (2 L?) from some guy that was selling QVC salvage (returns mainly) on eBay for I think around $35 bucks (this was at least 5 years ago). Brand new and still in the QVC packaging. regards, trillium "Nice" was in reference to the appearance of the model I own. Frankly, I thought the QVC set looked...cheap. Given the price, I originally (wrongly) assumed the set was made of aluminum. As I mentioned earlier, the QVC set appears to be a fine deal...I kind of wish I'd gotten it instead
  22. Which one is which, and which is "not the nice one" and why? Whew! The nice one (which is no longer available, despite the web order form) is the Rapid II seen here, while the not-so-nice one is a set available from QVC here. Both are 18/10 stainless with a triple layer fully encapsulated bottom ; I didn't look very closely at the "not-so-nice" one (hey, it's on QVC!), but, upon further review, it seems comparable to the Rapid II.
  23. Like everything else you could ever want... if you keep a weather eye peeled, sooner or later the old-style 8-litre Magefesa will turn up on eBay. Yeah, I've been watching eBay, don't even think about trying to outbid me. I think I mentioned on the other PC thread that I bought the 6 litre model. I'm quite happy with it. For what it's worth, the 6 and 8 litre models are identical in diameter; the difference is 2 inches (whoops, make that 4 cm ) in height.
  24. The 8 litre isn't sold anymore; I tried to order one about a month ago and was informed that it is no longer produced. You can get an 8 litre Magefesa from qvc, but it's not the nice one. However, the 6 litre is pretty nice too!
  25. Here's a Climbers Pressure Cooker. For what it's worth, this thread (especially Suvir's comments) convinced me I needed one; I bought the six quart Magefesa a couple weeks ago and I love it. Sadly, the eight quart model is no longer produced - though there is apparently a set containing an 8 quart model sold through QVC. I talked to a Magefesa representative who said I could order that set if I wanted an 8 quart model, but I got the impression that is wasn't as nice as the "real" Magefesa.
