  1. Thanks, anzu...I knew they started with a 'c'. Now I can rest, couldn't get anything from googling. Yes, we ate them boiled.
  2. Oh good! Lots of places already. We'll be putting up at Grand Pacific Palisades at Armada Drive for one week, Anaheim, Las Vegas and San Francisco squeezed in another. My family is quite adventurous when it comes to food, but nothing spicy...for the children. Mexican food is too 'pepperish' for them. The chinese restaurant suggestions are more for my in-laws and my brother's family who will be in a separate group. Tks, y'all!
  3. Does anyone know what this nut is called in English? I think it's called lin kok in cantonese. It tastes very much like chestnut; only see it during Mid-autumn Festivals. It is a tough nut to crack! Had this at my sis' home last night.
  4. Thanks, people. There are actually more...I made enough for all my nephews and nieces. I love to see their faces and hear their squeals of delight about how cute they are. Sue-On cheh-cheh, if I ever open a bakery, I'll be sure to sign you up as my publicity manager.
  5. Thank you, Di. Well, I'm from Malaysia, and the chocolate and cocoa we have here is pretty limited. I buy the 'best' available to the masses, which is Van Houten which I think is equivalent to Hershey's? Although we can get Hershey's here, I don't particularly care for the taste. Oh, I'd like to add....got to taste the brownie cake and it was really good. I was especially happy with it turning out very level and there were no cracks at all.
  6. *whistle* *whistle* *echo* *echo* Made koong chai paeng (doll biscuits)/chue chai paeng (piggie biscuits) for the children. I've got some moulds but I don't like them...must hunt for nicer ones next year. Anyway, made these freehand.
  7. Yes, this method makes a 'neater' dish (in terms of appearance and taste)...but I'm guilty of skipping this part...too much time on the 'puter, too little time left for cooking! p/s I always soak the melon in salted water for at least 15 minutes, if not the children can't take the bitterness.
  8. Pressed for time (Mid-Autumn festival), I could only squeeze in a simple cake for my sis's 50th birthday. Chiantiglace's Mirror Chocolate Glaze recipe came at the right time....so here it is...I love it already. Cake is double the brownies recipe from Baker & Spice, Baking with Passion. To see the gloss,
  9. One of our local bloggers did an excellent photo blog pt1, pt 2,pt3, pt 4 on the Mid-Autumn Festival:Malaysian style.
  10. Nothing 'straight' about them...in fact, the 'straits' (malaccan straits) chinese are mixed. Oh, I didn't know that adding hard-boiled eggs wasn't a chinese-chinese thing to do. In Malaysia, eggs are added to a number of dishes, not necessarily chinese dishes.
  11. Say, I should think about getting a mould done in my name.
  12. Your question: Can you keep it for a thousand years? Answer: Why? Will you be around to eat it? Throw it away. We only buy enough to consume within the week, never to keep. I like my thousand year old eggs 'fresh'.
  13. Restaurants generally use fresh pineapples but I use canned local pineapples for convenience. *blush* Michael, your pineapple knowledge surpasses mine. Perhaps, JustKay can expand on this as she hails from one of the pineapple-producing state, Johor, the other state being Sarawak. Lanas and lenas? I've never heard of this version? Local slang, perhaps?
  14. Sounds like the same kind of pumpkin...sweet and soft...but ours are much smaller.
  15. Oh, no...no...don't stop! We'll be coming over for a 2-week vacation later in the year...and would love to get enough eatz to fill our time there. These places, nice and cheap, would help stretch our ringgit (US$1=Ringgit Malaysia RM3.80). Is Carlsbad close enough to dine here?
  16. That would be perfect.
  17. Yum! Keep it up and I don't have to crack my head to think what to cook for the next day! For me, I put in more big bombay onions and I don't fish it out...I like the onion's sweetness. And, I add a hard-boiled egg to braise for each of us. Sometimes, slivered mushrooms are added too.
  18. Yes, the west coast is largely sheltered from the monsoon by the mountain ranges. Went to get some supplies this morning, so I didn't have time to cook lunch. There's this incredible economy (mixed) rice shop near where I went; they offered at least 40 dishes. Packed 2 boxes - total cost RM8.80 (less than US$2.50) - more than feed my 3 girls plus me. Clockwise from the braised soya sauce hard-boiled egg, steamed egg with minced pork, crispy sweet ikan bilis (anchovies), vinegared pig trotters (chue geok sheun), stir-fried shredded jicama, steamed pumpkin (<----hz, that was for you). Clockwise from the egg (again), mock char siu, sweet sour pork with pineapples, tofu coins with mixed veg. I don't normally pick green vegetables from such places no matter how clean they look, because I always feel the greens are not properly washed....pet peeve....especially if they are not organic.
  19. Would you have the address of this Denny's Cafe, Anna? Tks.
  20. Nasi Kandar stalls are notorious for their high and arbitrary prices. Laksa, did you order a beef curry, a piece or 2 fried chicken, a vegetable curry or 2? Krista, on top of that, you probably took a piece of crab (or crap in this case)? They must have detected that you hail from the Big Apple....or the Big U$ of A.
  21. You had that 'SAFARI' only in July and you're already homesick for the food??? I can't imagine how the other poor souls who have left their food roots longer than you must be suffering.
  22. Thank you! Muahhhhh!
  23. While you're doing your food-sampling, would you be open to attend some classes? If you are, do check out this site, go to her schedule pages. Nov/Dec schedules are not up yet. She's quite an authority on Msian cuisine and her classes are limited to 8 participants only. One thing to note. As Krista G. said here, the real thing most probably cannot be replicated when you get home, because some fresh ingredients are not available to you. Do keep this thread updated as and when your schedule is more firm. We'd love to show some Msian hospitality.
  24. Suzy, I may not have been there before but my siblings have. However, even if none of us had gone there before, it wouldn't have stopped us going just based on hearsay! Nothing ventured, nothing gained! p/s My little family of 5 actually hit untried restaurants (kid-friendly ones) every weekend, more hits than misses, I must say.
  25. Yuki dear, how does one access the site in English? My chinese is not velly good leh.
