  1. Some suggestions for your tahu? I think I posted this elsewhere, fried tahu, splashed with a mixture of kecap manis & asin, thinly sliced shallots, topped with cabai padi.
  2. TP, thanks for sharing that wonderful report and great photos. This one in particular practically jumped out of the screen, it's so vivid and very appetizing! Please keep those photos coming! What's the dish to the left of those gorgeous clams?
  3. That looks tremendously good, Laksa (well, so does everything!). Just wondering, what sort of beverages to you like to have with your meals?

    Rum Cake

Would you be willing to share the recipe? Please please please

    Fried Tofu

Another good way is quite simple: after frying, cut the tofu into quarters, splash with a combination of kecap manis (sweet soy sauce) and kecap asin (salty soy sauce), add thinly sliced shallots and top with chopped birdseye chile peppers. Delicious
  6. OK Laksa, look for a PM from me....but in the meantime, blog on......
  7. I was wondering about that myself, because often "crab" xiaolong tang bao is a mixture of crab and pork. There's one place in SF that makes all-crab xiaolong bao, but you have to order a day ahead and get a monster-sized order because they do in a whole dungeness crab for your order. Oh -- a crab & pork mix, huh? That's too bad, but I'm sure there'll be something else equally delicious while I'm there. Chinatown seems to be the first place our family hits when we get to New York; and we have a lot of fun going to all our favorite places for snacks and wonderful nostalgia. Sadly, it doesn't look like we'll be on the Left Coast this trip though. Hopefully next time, to try those all-crab xiao long bao. Gary, I may have to ask you for the address in San Francisco when the time comes, ok?
  8. Laksa, those nutty snacks are really good and handy, aren't they? Have you ever had Ak-Am peanut & sesame seed candy? If not, I'm gonna bring some for you and Ms. Congee who, btw, I hope will continue to post on eG after your blog is over. (That was so hard to type because I really don't want to see it end!)
  9. I can't answer that, but I think I recall seing halal Chinese food in Flushing. Downtown Flushing is New York's second Chinatown, and worth checking out, too. It's very easy to get to, just take the #7 Subway from Times Square or Grand Central Station all the way to the end of the line, and you're in the heart of it when you emerge from the station. Thanks, Gary...will try to do that. Yes, I love seafood and crab xlb sounds great. Do you know where I can find them?
  10. Laksa in da house! These blogs just get better and better, don't y'all agree? I'm practically crazy-glued to my computer, don't want to miss further episodes of the adventures of Wild Man. Great blog, wongste!
  11. When I come to New York later this year, will I be able to find non-pork xiao long bao/any other dumplings/buns et al there in Chinatown?
  12. eunny jang, what kind of camera did you get?
  13. Monica, The Nemo cake looks awesome. With homemade vanilla ice cream, it must've tasted pretty good, ya!?! Was that extra candle for you?
  14. Hey Professor! Hope you're enjoying your trip and having a great time. Looking forward to hearing about your excellent meals.
  15. Hi Gary, Enjoyed living vicariously through your report. Those buns look fantastic! I am so excited because we at long last have XLB in Bandung! I know now why you love them so much! All the best, Yetty
  16. Thanks, Kew. Looks easy, would that be yellow food coloring that you use? Yetty
  17. Actually, that sounds rather good to me. Kew, have you got a recipe that you wouldn't mind sharing? Thanks, Yetty
  18. That's absolutely fine with me, Laksa! I was planning to be in DC/NYC this summer, but had to postpone the trip until later this year. What would you like me to bring you? My husband's family is like that too, they must have krupuk and sambal with their meals.
  19. Yes, I quite like these too! The sweet ones are great for snacking, but I can't eat too many of them. I've just discovered these pineapple chips, they're sweet & tart and so crunchy. Banana, durian and jackfruit chips are available, too. But I prefer the pineapple. Another favorite is cassava chips. "Betcha can't eat just one". Though I don't generally like tempe, these tempe chips are quite addictive. However, I do still miss my old favorites from home: Cape Cod Salt & Vinegar Potato Chips, Nacho Cheese Doritos and Charles Chips (do they still make them?). Wish I could have a New York Style brand garlic bagel chip right about now.
  20. Naomi & pinkpau, thanks so much, am feeling a little better. AmyDaniel, this morning breakfast in bed was exactly that! Fried eggs - over very easy, hot buttered toast, and fresh blended mango juice. I'm really being pampered, and have been told there's a second breakfast to follow later on at around 10:00am, which will be homemade pangsit kuah (wonton soup) with many droplets of aromatic sesame oil!
  21. Been feeling sick all week, so yesterday for breakfast I had bihun kuah (rice noodle soup with shredded chicken) and this morning -- piping hot bubur ayam (chicken jook/congee), with all the fixin's. There's nothing like chicken soup for what ails ya!
  22. That sounds like a wonderful way to kickstart the day. How do those papaya seeds taste, johnnyd? I like their visual appeal as garnishes/toppings on salads or desserts, but never chomped down on them.
  23. Welcome pinkpau! Weekday mornings I have buttered toast with jam and sometimes Nutella with a mug of green tea. The past couple of days it's been a blowl of oatmeal, I like it topped with cinnamon sugar. On the weekends, I'll make biscuits, eggs and sausages or pancakes for the family. Occasionally, I do a batch of pisang goreng (banana fritters), too.
