  1. Thank you, Barritz -- that works.
  2. I can't find the photos, either. What's the secret??
  3. Tony and crew -- please stay safe. And Tony, please keep posting so we'll know you're all right.
  4. I bought the Decoding Ferran Adria DVD. The food is beautifully photographed. I saw Tony at a book signing in Pasadena on Sunday and he said that the Food Network had said the Ferran Adria show was "too smart." Figures.
  5. I pre-ordered "The Reach of a Chef" from Amazon and am eagerly awaiting it. As a culinary nonprofessional, but enthusiastic foodie, I found "The Making of a Chef" and "The Soul of a Chef" fascinating. And I learned a lot. Ruhlman is an excellent writer, and I'll buy anything he writes.
  6. I read the book and loved it. Although I never met Julia personally, the book seemed to me to read as though she had personally written it with no outside help. I love France, and I thoroughly enjoyed her descriptions of various places she visited or lived in France. I was very sorry when the book ended. I wish there could have been a sequel.
  7. I got a Bourdain "author alert" from Harper Collins a couple of days ago with a title of "Decoding Ferran Adria DVD." But it's not a DVD (the one we've all been waiting for) but a book. There is an excerpt which is obviously fiction, and yet the Washington Post Q&A a couple of days ago asked Tony about fiction and he said he hoped to have a book out next year. Anybody out there make any sense of this??
  8. Iloved the show -- Tony being Tony, and you can't get better than that. Honesty is what makes him so admired by so many of us. Iceland will survive.
  9. Writing talent must be a family trait, Maggie. I enjoyed your account very much. I bought and read "Garlic and Sapphires" as soon as it was published and loved it. I then worked backward and read "Comfort Me With Apples" and "Tender At The Bone." All three are can't-put-it-down books. I hope she will write more.
  10. I like the new format, although I agree that the white-bordered cover was classier. I'm a charter subscriber and it's my favorite food magazine. I hope it doesn't go out of business in the middle of my latest renewal.
  11. I have read "Garlic and Sapphires" and loved it. I just got "Comfort Me With Apples" and look forward to reading it. Gourmet is a challenge, but I'm still threading through the advertising and enjoying what's left of the magazine.

Great pictures! I remember seeing a couple of times in Paris "No soup and salad" posted outside restaurants. No doubt they've seen too many American ladies who say "Just soup and salad" (a favorite order of my mother's).
  13. I also like Cook's Illustrated and love Saveur, which has detailed articles and authentic recipes. I've subscribed since their first issue.
  14. I read the NY Times review and thought that if I had never heard of Anthony Bourdain, the man she was writing about didn't sound like anyone likeable and I probably would have skipped the show. I think the reviewer either doesn't like Tony or she just doesn't "get" him. Luckily, we do -- I can't wait to see the show!
  15. I also missed the show, but got on the Net for 60 Minutes Wednesday and ordered a tape of the segment on Keller. There's a little tease there too, including Tony's comment about Keller's plates needing to be perfect. The tape will be shipped on July 13.
  16. Marlena, do tell us the story!
  17. I love Mario. Unfortunately, they moved Molto Mario from the Saturday morning slot I always watched, so I don't see it very often. But he is one of the few really good shows left on Food Network. Re the collective "we" -- I always assumed he meant himself and his cooks.
  18. A line from a TV commercial a while back perfectly expesses my feelings about sushi: "Where I come from, they call that stuff bait!" I just don't like raw fish -- although I do like raw oysters. Go figure!

  20. Heavy accents... you mean like Emeril's? ← Tony Bourdain said at a book signing re his discussion with Food Network about a possible third season of A Cook's Tour (which he opted not to do) that FN had said "we don't want to hear any foreign accents." The audience gasped.
  21. I quite agree. It helps to go through and rip out all of the advertising pages before attempting to read the magazine.
  22. Check out the food section of today's L.A. Times (12/22) for a review of La Huasteca in Lynwood (part of metropolitan LA). The chef-owner is Alfonso Ramirez, originally from Puebla. Definitely not the usual Tex-Mex cuisine. (Sorry, I don't know how to post the link.)
  23. I bought Bourdain's Les Halles cookbook for my sister-in-law and will be getting it autographed for her tonight at Campanile restaurant in Los Angeles.
  24. What a lovely, gracious man he is. I saw him recently at a book signing/lunch at the Getty Center in Los Angeles. He briefly spoke to the lunch crowd, ending with asking everyone to raise a toast to Julia. Then he made the rounds and visited every table. I have also read "The Apprentice" and loved it. I'm a fan for life.
  25. I saw a promo on the Food Network last night announcing a tribute to Julia beginning at 7:00 p.m. Eastern and Pacific this Sunday night, August 22.
