  1. Good you got a job, but too bad we won't be able to meet you this time around.
  2. Just giving this topic a bump. (Warning: scary video) It's really a good time. Please check out the links in the first post.
  3. Yes, please do some editing. I spotted a bunch of duplicate, or near-duplicate, photos. Good photos, though. What kind of phone?
  4. I'll start, with quantity This was taken a little over a year ago. The books still look much like this, except there now are about ten more piled on top of the other books at the left side of the window seat, plus one more CI bound volume has joined the collection. We have a bunch more food-related books (but not cookbooks) in another room.
  5. Update: Yes Alex +1 Tammylc + x number of friends and neighbors NancyH (+ Bob?) cdh -- Friday only (also in town on Thursday) five eGers we haven't seen for a while -- including Edsel, White Lotus (I think), and tino27 of bread-baking fame. Maybe gfron1 In spirit only David Ross Melissa H Kerry Beal Maison Rustique Smithy
  6. You could do a whole -- repeat, WHOLE -- lot worse than that. But let's see what Tammy has to say.
  7. I wanted to give this thread a quick bump. I'll ask Tammy to post here with some recommendations for interesting places to visit and good places to eat lunch. I also will get a better idea of what time we'll be getting together on Friday. And speaking of which, if anyone would like to meet for lunch on Friday, please let me know. We can work out the specifics as the time gets closer. 8. That's great that the Krups brews at the correct temperature. The Bonavita is indeed set up to do the bloom thing:
  9. I don't know if I can get through all of it in a hour. How much is it for a day?
  10. You will find that people are all over the place on this topic, as well as pretty much any other topic, around here. However, the general consensus is, if you're happy with what you're doing, keep on doing it. The only upgrade I'd even consider suggesting is that if you're committed to automatic drip, you might want to look at a Technivorm (and even then, eGers will be of various opinions about that machine). I found a used one via Craigslist and am very happy with it. The Bonavita is also supposed to do a good job. Here's a comparison from several years ago; there may well be some newer ones.
  11. Are you sincerely worried about this and are looking for support or feedback, or are you just humble bragging? Either way, the only professional help you might need would relate to upgrading your equipment.

  13. Very impressive. That "before" picture made my eyes hurt. I didn't know where to focus (or, even better, not focus).

Craigslist sometimes is a source of unintentional humor. For example, just today, someone posted this in the Appliances By Owner section: ***Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker/Waffle Maker/Can Opener*** For just a second or two, my thought was, "Weird. But cool. What does it look like?" Then, of course... ------------------- Also today, this was posted in the same section by someone apparently unclear on the concept of appliances (or pets, or both): Fantastic Little Chihuahua Puppies
  15. First bump. Trust me -- a Gathering is a really good time, plus Ann Arbor is a fun place to visit (even if it was #10 in Travel + Leisure's absurd list of "America's Rudest Cities").
  16. Only in my mind...
  17. Coconut? Hmm. I'd be OK with sprinkling some toasted coconut over the top after baking, but it just doesn't work for me as part of the filling. I'm also wondering if that's part of the issue here. That said, the CI recipe from 1998 always works perfectly for me. The filling (uncooked) for a 9" x 13" baking dish is 4 large eggs, beaten slightly; 1 1/3 c granulated sugar; 3 T all-purpose flour; 2 t finely grated lemon zest; 2/3 c fresh lemon juice, strained; 1/3 c whole milk; and 1/8 t salt. They emphasize pouring the filling into a warm crust. Bake at 325F for about 20 minutes, then cool for at least 30 minutes.

  19. I'll be bumping this thread from time to time, just to make sure it doesn't get buried in the View New Content forum. As of now we have: Yes Alex +1 Tammylc +? Maybe NancyH +1 cdh gfron1 David Ross
  20. That would be terrific. I hope you and your friend and her family can make it there.
  21. I think only one might be needed -- the listing says, "Accommodates a whole 45 lb. chicken..." It's the Tardis of countertop convection ovens!
  22. Wow. I hope both of you recover well and quickly. It would be good to see you there. Regarding lodging, here's a general answer for everyone. Ms. Alex and I are big fans of Airbnb. Ann Arbor and vicinity has a lot of them, with a wide variety of prices and types of accommodation. In fact, we've already booked a place we've stayed at twice before. And if we weren't staying there, we'd probably go to this place outside of Dexter, which looks to be about eight miles from Tammy's. These three also look interesting, and are closer to town: one two three The nicest hotels near Tammy's place are Weber's (formerly Weber's Inn, now just Weber's -- a "boutique hotel," la-di-dah) and Holiday Inn Express & Suites Ann Arbor West. BTW, in case anyone is flying in or taking the train, I'm absolutely certain we'll have plenty of folks who can drive you to and from the airport, train station, or our venues.
  23. Way back when, in '67...wait, that's a Steely Dan song. Let's try again. Way back in 2003, Chicago was a hotbed of eG members and activities. The lone Grand Rapids eG'er at the time, MatthewB, suggested the alternative of having a gathering here. The rest is history. (Silly Alex, of course it's history; it happened in the past.) Since then, there've been three gatherings in Ann Arbor, hosted by the generous and organized tammylc, along with one each in Chicago, Kansas City, Cleveland, and -- expanding the definition of "heartland" just a bit -- Philadelphia. For example, here is the "report" topic for the 2010 Ann Arbor gathering. Tammy has again offered to host a gathering this year, August 5-7. This will be a bit less scheduled than most of the others, although activities -- food-related and otherwise -- certainly are available for those who wish. To get a sense of what a gathering is all about, (and to get an idea of how involved they used to be), please see this post from 2006. Although it's a "heartland" gathering, anyone can attend. EG'ers have come to Michigan from as far afield as the Pacific Northwest, New York City, eastern Ontario, and even Japan (via Cleveland). Of course, guests are welcome, too. This year, we'll start by getting together on Friday night at The Last Word, a terrific cocktail bar with good food. On Saturday, we'll make, and eat, a communal dinner in the common house of Tammy's cohousing complex. Those of us who will be cooking or baking at the common house will hit up the Kerrytown Market and Shops and the adjacent Ann Arbor Farmers Market, plus any other shops as needed (Zingerman's?) for ingredients. (Sometimes a dish is created on the spur of the moment, depending on what looks wonderful at the market. That's how the legendary eGullet roasted cauliflower topic got started.) Folks also can opt to bring ingredients or even completed dishes. Wine, etc., will be BYO. On Sunday, if enough people are interested, we'll get together for brunch, place TBD. Re money, Friday night and Sunday brunch will be separate checks. We're looking at a contribution of $20 per person to cover shopping expenses for Saturday's dinner, with collection details TBD. Please post any and all questions you might have. Depending on who's interested and what's needed, we can post information about lodging, transportation, etc. So if you're thinking of attending, please add a post with your eG name (real name optional), how many people will be coming with you, and which days you'll be there. I'll start: Alex +1 Fri/Sat/Sun To keep eGullet's legal team from dragging me out of my house in the middle of the night and forcing me to watch Gigli and eat stale popcorn as punishment, I need to include this: Click here for the terms under which this event is listed in the eG Forums.
  24. Or doesn't care, period. Or perhaps the forager lied. All problems, of course.
