  1. well it takes planning - i guess you will have to get a backpack - and all the food needs to be prepped beforehand. no wonder he's exhausted tho - combine minimal calories in with maximal calories out, and um..he's on the Survivor tm diet. i've usually made up all my food on the weekends in handy dandy little gladware containers. every morning, before heading out the door, i pack my cooler, and eat from it every 3 hours.
  2. congratulations on the gym membership soba! you can use a 100% whey powder, or a whey-casein blend. all the lactose has been removed from these milk-derived products, so you get pure protein instead. i think most weightgainers are something like 24gs whey protein, plus 60gs malto in any case. you could try soy powders, but imo, for the taste experience the piddling 16-17gs protein you get out of a scoop just isn't worth it. and again eating PLUS training are gonna be what changes your body -14-20 cals per lb - at 146 you're looking at 2500-3000 cals per day AT least. Split that up into 5-6 meals - you could even do 6 meals of 500cals, each - don't stint on the carbs and fats - but definitely make sure you're getting a decent amount of protein in each meal (i'd say roughly 30 grams per meal) and don't underestimate the power of the post-workout meal. Actually after lifting weights, the weight-gainer shake would be the first thing i put in my body. And that, honestly, would be the only time i drank it. and again eat, lift, sleep. repeat.
  3. www.wannabebigforums.com :) the perfect name, huh? as for BFs dilemma - to put things in perspective - guys trying to gain weight typically eat anywhere from 14-20 cals per pound. in order to lose weight it's typically 10-12 cals per pound. so i'm sure you can guess that peanuts, and a couple of fried eggs and a slice of bread really aren't going to get him up tot he calorie requirement he needs to gain, no matter how calorie dense the meal you cook for him is. some guys i know are eating 4000 to 6000 cals a day, and it's hard work. but the easiest way to do it is to plan out your food, and stick to your schedule. get him a big-ass cooler for christmass so he can stick it in the car, with all his food packed in it. and vouchers for all you can eat buffets. actually he's lucky to have you, since you can help him with meal-planning - it seems a lot of the guys i know lose it, because they don't have many cooking skills and tend to fall into a chicken breast-broccoli-brown rice rut 5-6 meals a day, every day thing. one tip i can give you - send him off in the morning with a hearty breakfast of oats, mixed with peanut butter, maybe a little bacon crumbled in there and with a scoop of protein powder mixed in. (of course he prolly won't feel hungry again until 2 in the afternoon, but it is nutrient packed) that actually is another problem too - it can be overwhelming trying to eat the amount of food necessary to really put weight on.
  4. he ruined a good thing, huh?
  5. well here's a question? does he have his meals planned? does he eat every 3-4 hours? you're right that he needs high-carb foods, along with high protein. weight-gainers are excellent however, you're right - it's not too appealing int he cold. the thing it boils down to tho, is eating regularly and eating often. one of those weight-training sayings that come to mind is "Eat, Lift, Sleep. Repeat." if he wants some help - i can point him to some forums that are filled with guys trying to do the same thing, lots of them succeeding.
  6. *lol* but it's a fabulous swimming pool. seriously tho - if it were me (never having been to France in my life, mind) but having a close friend who goes to Aix-en-Provence quite regularly on business, I would choose Provence, or the Languedoc. (be wary of strikes in Marseilles, tho)

    Glaze for spiral ham

ooh...a cheerwine glaze sounds really good!
  8. go to Provence - it would be like living a Mayle book!
  9. this is true of any corner of any major intersection OTP tho. I wouldn't see it as a coincedence, necessarily. personally - i think if our prisoners got a taste of Islamic law, a lot more would be thankful to be getting 3 hots and a cot, with their limbs intact.

    Your favorite sparkler?

wow i'm from the east end and don't remember pindar ever having a sparkler. course my favorite from that area - and i can't get it anywhere in northern nj- is from pugilese. it is a sparkling pinot noir which is amazing hey suzi - yeah they actually had 2 sparklers when i went - a spring and a winter. this was in the 90s tho. now they jsut have the Cuvee Rare.... http://www.pindar.net/Wines/wines.html on another note - i'm kicking myself and wished i had picked up a bottle for home, but i found a vinho verde instead for us- but I picked up a fox creek "vixen" sparkling shiraz as a gift for a friend - i told him he has to tell me how it tastes when he opens the bottle.
  12. in my experience the best chinese food is always in a jewish neighborhood. i still fondly remember this one place in Forest Hills. yum.
  13. my broccoli casserole.
  14. Guessing now: Smith? no this was a really small junior college. I went up there once, because my roommate and i were piggybacking on a school trip to Montreal. I want to say it might have been Pine Manor - but not entirely sure.
  15. ack. had to clean up after a bunch of TKEs once when i was a pledge. to this day, one of the most disgusting things i've ever done.
  16. actually one of my sorority sister's older sisters went to an all girl junior college up in Mass somewhere - they had the best menus there. The girls got to request what they wanted and had meals of lobster thermidor and chocolate souffle. sounds like an ace cooking gig.
  17. i wish we'd had a cook when i was in college. hell i wish we'd had real live sorority houses. stupid nassau county zoning rules.

    Your favorite sparkler?

actually one that i really liked and can't find down here for the life of me is Pindar's Spring Champagne. i remembe rhaivng it for the first time on a wine-tour of their vineyard and it was a revelation to me. granted i was barely legal at the time, but the taste still stays with me.
  19. yeah i've heard lots about pig n chik myself, but have never been there. champs shares a parking lot with Wendy's and Eckerds (i think? some drugstore) on South Cobb Drive at it's junction with Windy Hill. Their key lime pie kicks butt alongside the babyback ribs.
  20. daddy dz is still there and it's still pretty good too. champs in smyrna has good brisket, apparently, but i really like their babyback ribs the best.

    Your favorite sparkler?

this is a good thread actually.... i need to buy a nice inexpensive pink for someone (don't ask) any suggestions that are easily available?
  22. that was an excellent idea actually. did you use ginger slices or greated ginger? if you added grated ginger - maybe an amount the size of your fingernail, that will help. for nausea chewing little chunks of cangdied ginger work for stopping it. unfortunately for the other end of the spectrum - the foods that will help that, won't help settle your stomach. so you need to just keep well hydrated and let it run it's course.
  23. i think that's a different scenario tho.
  24. adam - having run across the same problem transplanting from NYC to ATL, all i can say is choose Einstein's over Dunkin Donuts. much better bagel, and closer to what they were back home. (sorry for horning in, btw)
  25. just thought i'd update after looking at my mom's recipe, the exact measurements for her rasam, it's flexible, and can be adjusted obviously, but this is what works for knocking out congestion in me: 1 tbsp peppercorns cracked, 1/2 tbsp of all the other spices, except turmeric powder (1 tsp), and asafoetida (pinch), 6-7 garlic cloves, and 1/2 a bunch of coriander. she also mentions 1 can tomato sauce.
