    Microwave

most recent use of microwave ovens .... Back to the food uses, which are much safer: I use my microwave oven for defrosting frozen spinach .. and then squeeze out all of that water before using in recipes...no point in waiting for the spinach to heat in a pot this way ...
  2. CBS News article If you indulge in this form of car cuisine, what are your favorites? At what mph are you likely to stop nibbling?
  3. NYTimes article Do you patronize street vendors in your city or town? Which are your regular favorites? "They cook in adverse conditions. They have to be social. And they always have to be at the top of their game." Have you ever really thought about these "requirements" for street vendors?
  4. At this point in November, about the only thing of which I am absolutely certain is that we will not be dining upon that familiar green-bean-cream'o'mushroom-soup-Durkee-fried-onion-rings-casserole ... Everything else is pretty much up for grabs in the menu planning stage ... and a big welcome to Emily who is just brand new to eGullet! You'll love some of what you read here and then try new foods from all the inspiration we offer ...
  5. article from Beverage Daily So,will this make you think twice before having a soda? Are you still unconvinced despite the study report? Is this yet another hysteria-inducing bit of medical news? Even CNN's Dr. Sanjay Gupta made Anderson Cooper's first 10 minutes on Anderson 360 with this news bulletin .. The Caffeine Database I certainly found these numbers quite surprising! On a slightly lighter note Take the Death-by-Caffeine Challenge
  6. An old thread (and I have a closet full of them!) to be sure, but the only proper place to post: The Voodoo Knife Block What a great idea! Removes anger and keeps cutlery sharp for one price!
  7. and what became of those little kids who grew up eating knishes and schmaltz in their chopped liver? "Rose, Grandma Gourmet" lived to a hearty, healthy 104 .... Soooo, maybe fast food + exercise is the hidden secret to long life?

    Microwave

Because I am hardly a Luddite, I do use my microwave for some foods. I occasionally reheat some leftovers in it, bake sweet and white potatoes, defrost some frozen items (gingerly), make popcorn in it, rewarm a cup of coffee or tea (but very briefly), and, I forgot, melt chocolate. I hate to have crisp foods degenerate into soggy masses ... generally, it is a kitchen appliance that I could have survived quite well without.
  11. North Yorkshire Voices glossary scroll way way down for this one ...
  12. the website for Uglesichs ... thanks for the tip on this, Diner Girl!
  13. You have sold me! And the Slate comparison seems to be likewise in agreement on the value of the electric kettle. I especially like the fact that it doesn't heat up the surrounding space.
  14. recipe is right here: Opera Cake .. thanks to NPR!
  15. Back to the topic at hand in this thread, please? The cartoon from the ajc.com is perfect for this discussion ... quality and McDonald's an oxymoron?
  16. as if .... those photos are staged??!!
  17. or pretty much anything you don't want to have limp and droopy ... microwaved foods seem to need a shot of Viagra to make them "presentable" ...
  18. and when I see words misspelled on CNN I am equally livid ...
  19. Haven't ordered but just perused their website .. at $50+ per pie ... out of town shipping adds up! .. it is highly unlikely that I will order anytime soon. They have articles on their pies in the NYT and WSJ, they say, so I imagine the pies are noteworthy .. but $50? Not me!
  20. Yes Positively Certainly
  21. Thanks for the recipes, Jason, but it still needs a little heat, humidity, and lagniappe to make it authentic ...
  22. article from Slate online Your opinion? Have a tea kettle? Old fashioned is just fine with me? New ones look better for my needs?
  23. Mike Luckovich on McD's labelling from Atlanta Journal-Constitution (free registration req'd)...
  24. Last night's email from my daughter agreed with the purist, quickest for immediate gratification, sentiment: squeeze and enjoy! Thanks to everyone for your advice .. I may actually buy a tube of the stuff and give it a try myself!
  25. Tim Zagat was on CNN this week and when asked about the pronunciation of his last name, replied, "Doesn't matter. Just buy the book(s)." He grinned that Cheshire Cat grin of his (che.shire) ...
