Semolina pudding with a red currant sauce recipe looks good and simple as well! I think of red currants as being close in taste to cranberries because of their sharp acidic taste and piquancy .. and might use them as I would cranberries in an orange cranberry cake or bread.
-
Cashews .. God bless you! and I like Georgia pecans, hazelnuts and Brazil nuts and almonds, pistachios (when shelled) ... depends on whether they are roasted with other things like salt or other flavors .. ecch .. least favorite are walnuts which I find bitter tasting often ...

Too bad this phrase can't be reversed ...

Possibly the culinary genius and taciturn gentleman whose "sphincter is permanently set to mist"?? Now that would make for one very quiet show!!
-
but where does it say this exactly? I know about the "backstory" on Brasserie LeCoze ... but nothing of the closing, or possible, or eventual, closing ... I would expect this type of comment by perhaps a John Kessler, who is the main restaurant person in town at the Journal-Constitution .. but have heard nothing as yet ... [edit: thanks for clearing that up! Whew! I am relieved!]

Hence the need for a "proper southern breakfast ... the pacesetter indeed ...

I would agree on this one but thought she had requested something distinctly southern in genre ... and where her time is limited, I think she now has a lovely 'bouquet' of eating options to choose from .... hopefully, the schedules of the airlines will cooperate! Six hours is long if one is sitting in the airport but not quite so luxurious in the traffic of this city ...

Our local posters have done an excellent job of presenting you with a number of interesting options .. may I say that I hope that your far too brief taste of Atlanta during your stopover, will only serve to whet your appetite, not only for the food we have here now but for this remarkable city with its numerous attractions! Do come back again, if possible, and share your impressions!

Here you will find the collection of digests for a number of media which are located in the Southeastern states. This week's Southeastern Forum Digest includes, in alphabetical order, by city: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has as its main story the ubiquitous fried green tomatoes, which is why the movie with the same name, was such a success. The southern fried green tomato is something of a symbol of true southern cooking. And, while they may appear on northern menus, it just ain't the same, shuggah! The secret? Recipes from local restaurants accompany this deliciously appealing article: South City Kitchen's Fried Green Tomatoes With Goat Cheese and Red Pepper Coulis Ritter's Fried Green Tomatoes With Kalamata Olive Vinaigrette Salad Fried Green Tomatoes With Shrimp Remoulade Cargo Portside Grill's Fried Green Tomatoes With Herbed Cheese and Roasted Red Pepper Coulis Over Jalapeño Cheese Grits (fancy but lovely!) and, if you plan to do this thing exactly right, do read Fried Green Tomato cooking techniques...right here and now for a little dessert to wash those fried green tomatoes down! Reagan Walker's tribute to the 100 th anniversary of the banana split Carbs galore! This week's Access Atlanta from the AJC has a review of a local restaurant, the Cabin Room, which is known for serving great steaks and boar ... yes, boar: Worth a look if you are within driving distance of Atlanta. Atlanta Creative Loafing has a review of the Cabin Room as well .. from another local food reviewer ... but it received the same two stars as the previous review above ... a review of a new place for Southwestern cuisine, Asada, which shows promise... and then there is this: Bubblicious: Phoenix Noodle Cafe takes flight with fruity teas, nifty noodles Nowadays, saying "bubblicious" in Atlanta, makes one realize that it is rapidly becoming an oriental market for all types of teas .. whereas before, saying "bubbalicious" referred to barbecue ... The Charleston Post and Courier has a number of articles, one of which is about a restaurant and its owners, Philip Bardin and David Gressette, and their love of low country cuisine: There are some terrific recipes from the cookbook written with Jane and Michael Stern as well: Other articles here this week include a tart-sweet take on Key limes and their uses with some delicious-looking recipes. The Charlotte Observer has an article with links on the way in which Dunkin' Donuts is coming to the area to challenge the supremacy of Krispy Kreme (none of these spellings are mine, please note!). See for yourself .. read on ...Charlotte Creative Loafing has a very sharp article entitled "Keep Wokking" on the local oriental bounty of new delights for the Charlotte dining public... Tomi: Yet another article from this week's CCL is about summer wines to try: Memphis Commercial Appeal has a refeshingly cool article on homemade icecreams .... so get out your Swiss made Pacojets and let the party begin! July is, after all, National Ice Cream Month ! The Tennessean from Nashville spotlights Thai cooking with an article about local chef, Thai cooking teacher Susan Hudgens: Of course, recipes are linked to this article. The Orlando Sentinel has a piece on Gloria Spitzer, who has managed, with no small effort, to recreate recipes which are kept secret by their commercial originators: Apparently Colonel Harlan Sanders once called Pitzer "the Recipe Detective." Her new book, The Recipe Detective Gloria Pitzer's Recipe Journal will publish Sept. 1.The Triangle.com has a lead article on ethnic local dining: The News Observer which serves the cities of Raleigh, Durham, Cary, and Chapel Hill has a variety of interesting reading including the usual french fry manifesto: and while it doesn't feature any radical surprises, it is worth reading. I particularly enjoyed the tomato article and recipe for Tomatoes Stuffed with Toasted Hazelnuts and Parmesan .That about winds up our whirlwind tour of the media in the southeast ... will add more during the week if something incredibly compelling appears! Have a great week and come back to see what surprises are in store for you here next week. Stay cool, relax, and enjoy your summer, ya'll!

This is absolutely inspired, as usual for therese, and is the most sensible solution in all respects! Thanks for the input, therese, and I hope your husband John Kerry wins the election!
-
Look, folks, I dunno 'bout you and your sensitivities, but I have yet to call the Anti-Defamation League every time I go to a movie and see in their snack case a box or ten of JewJewBees (Jujubes) .... and if that ain't blatant anti-Semitism, I don't know what is!!
-
a very good beginning!! My choice would be The Horseradish Grill .. nouveau southern and lovely ... not open for lunch on Saturdays: HG website please be aware that the traffic here is not great and that you still must get back to the airport in time to do the security stuff ... lotsa websites on this link! enjoy your trip and meal here in Atlanta! South City Kitchen (open for lunch) .. reasonably accessible to the airport Watershed website?

Get it out of your system, if you must, but then we gotta move on to that Easter Bunny concern ... dry your tears with a fluffy, soft, southern biscuit, agbaber ... I'd say "the South will rise again" but it already has! Welcome to "the Sun Belt", a growing economic force to be reckoned with .. I reckon ...
-
I remember when the car called "the Probe" came out ... and someone remarked "I sure wouldn't want that on my rear bumper!" Corporations sometimes have the oddest senses of humor ...
-
If you aren't just pulling our collective legs here I'd go with "oil" and "foil" ... but you are probably kidding, no?
-
I concur with you, FG, that it does rather sound racially insensitive yet it always hits me, when I read about the history of New Orleans, and I think Passover coconut cookie when I read the word "octoroon" ...

The South didn't win the War?? Depends entirely on whom you ask ... where I live, they are convinced that it is only a matter of time until the truth will "out" ... oh, and another urban myth shot to hell for you, agbaber, there is no Santa Claus ... He is just another dude out to sell overbought merchandise from Target ...
-
Miracle Whip?? Banned from eGullet is too good for ya. flip6577!! but the thought of heated Miracle Whip boggles my feeble mind!!
-
and, I assume, you have no regrits?? Good point on using the cast iron in a small confined space ... and the smoke detector problem ...
-
Amen, indeed, amen ...
-
Mine is cheaper ... but yours look better ... Thanks as always, andiesenji, for once again proving to be the repository of all things culinary!!
-
How about one, or all, of you entering the contest now?? Seriously would like to see an eGulleteer win this one!! the application!!! Marlena, you could go up against this judge on grilled cheese any day!! Ooops, you have to be 18 or older! Still viable, Marlena??
-
et voila!! Enjoy!! but pay for it first ...

While I don't think I am "sticking my head in the sand" on this issue, I realize that I need not see the recipe's originator's personal legal file records nor even check his legal "underwear" ... I simply avoid O.J. now and opt instead for grapefruit juice, on the grounds that I might come into contact with a "freed" murderer's breakfast drink ...
