  1. Care to expound just a bit on that? Your comment reminds me of those made by a character played by Charles Grodin in The Heartbreak Kid (1972),written by Bruce Jay Friedman and Neil Simon, in which Grodin visits his girlfriend's parents in the snowy midwest and says, "These are honest peas and honest carrots, sir, and I love your daughter."
  2. In answer to the first, no, life is only worthwhile when butter is present ... ghee, did I actually say that!? perhaps I ought to clarify ... Moderation in all things, as they say, mostly in moderation ...
  3. I remember this so well! My family was incredulous when I made it but no one wanted to try it when it cooled off .. so I ate the whole thing .. amazing!
  4. Since you seem to be interested in birds of a feather just now, there is this : clean birds include chicken, turkeys, geese, ducks, and doves. Unclean birds include eagles, sparrows, and crows. So when Rosh Hashonah comes around each year, I cross off the crows and the eagles which might have made some damned fine cassoulet and opt instead for chickens and ducks ... osprey is also out, it appears ... hence the expression "let 'em eat osprey" is rarely heard ...
  5. What do you expect of a chef? from Daniel Rogov ... from Geetha ... from Bux ...As for me? Personally, I have come to expect, and this came with trying some delightful tasting menus recently, a lot of creativity, intellect in making variations on a theme, and even a bit of humor (which I have seen here in Atlanta at the highly innovative Blais: foie gras shake, a tiny caesar salad served in a sardine can, a Tang gelatinized cube as a finale, etc.).... and, again, at Manresa when David Kinch presents his formidable "The Egg" ... Something which speaks of what the chef wants to convey in whatever fashion he/she chooses .. what is the message? possibly a true manifestation of his personal passion?
  6. Life is, of course, a crap shoot ... my own dear grandmere succumbed at the ripe old age of 104 ... her daughter, my mother, is now 93 and in perfect health, having eaten all manner of sugar and fat (always in the same dish topped with Hershey's syrup!) ... aunts and uncles in their nineties as well .. all have buried their spouses ... years ago ... heredity is the blessing conferred upon us without our selecting any options ... and it is, as I say, a crap shoot ... Of course, lots of smoking and drinking and wild, wild women don't always help ...
  7. Thanks, jackal, for the advice! I feel less guilty already (see "for the sin which I have commited in treating butter unfairly") ... which you yourself know ... but as for me, "give me butter or give me death" ...
  8. article on butter from The Times UK Although some of this idea of butter versus the "spreads" is addressed in the context of the thread on the South and Butter here, this thread will focus upon the much larger question of the disposing of some particular food item because of erroneous beliefs ... eggs and butter are prime examples ... Have your eating habits changed when you stopped to rethink your earlier beliefs? Are you adding back things like eggs? like butter? How about other things?
  9. How about we try these combined in one new thread, Carrot Top?? here
  10. Be sure not to miss the photos .. and especially the one of the Freegan Salad Bar: here and the equally tempting: Pizza party leftover buffet say, for people who don't wish to be seen as consumers, where did they get the digital camera used here??
  11. But wait, folks, there is yet more on this fascinating topic: right here! Bold font is, of course, mine ...
  12. Actually there is a tradition which pretty much suggested that latkes ought to be fried in goose fat, which was available from a goose prepared for the holidays. and then I happened upon this piece of wisdom
  13. But first we need some schmaltz to make our Thanksgiving turkeys glisten and "kvell" ...
  14. A joke, yes? PLEASE tell me you're kidding... ← Moi? Kidding? Are you making a vague, veiled reference to Had Gad Yoh? The title of this thread: When the Curse is Reversed ... made me think of that new pill one can take to have only four periods each year now, Seasonale .. you can tell how much I know about the Bambino and the Sox ... I really thought Seasonale was a spice blend for steak and chicken ....
  15. Well said, Susan G, and it confirms what I have basically contended throughout this thread ... eat as you wish but please spare me the endless "justifications" for what you do ... I like the one about "during the days, these freegans hold real jobs" .. and after a night digging in the dumpsters, does one still get up and look hearty and hale, well-rested and chipper, for the day's work ahead?
  16. perhaps the price is right .. read the justification for their positions ...
  17. Aren't these diametrically opposing statements, whippy? One says something to the effect of "live and let live" while the second implies that being carnivorous is something people should aspire to and become .. I just don't get it ...
  18. I suspect if you could drag that crow to a kosher butcher and have it dispatched appropriately, it might be. Then again - it is the flying equivalent of a bottom feeder so it might not be OK. Crows don't eat carrion, do they??? ← What you've never had kosher crow soup with matzo balls?? As for eating carrion .. first you have to take it through security and then stow it in the overhead bins .. I heard it on Delta recently ...
  19. I have purchased this from Adagio Teas and been quite pleased .. see what you think after reading the details ... and do check out the section under "story" for some interesting stuff ... and the prices for Darjeelings #22, #1, and #2 are all quite good to me ...
  20. You can ride shotgun with me, Mel. ← Only if you take your Dave the Cook white stretch limo with the coolers for the martinis ... and don't start the fare meter until after we hit the SC border ...
  21. You drive a hard bargain, Marlene .. but I will check out the air fares from Atlanta to Dean's tennis court landing strip ...
  22. Read through 41, yes, 41, pages of this thread again? You can't be for real, Marlene .. let's just ask Varmint outright if he'll have us (all) for dinner .. that would be much less time-consuming ... If Marlene is also picking up the airfare and hotel rooms, then I am in!
  23. Yes! This was a good year for the Cardinals and I am so pleased to see their efforts bear fruit (see? food again!) St Louis ribs it is!! So, between that and the Red Sox, the meal will feature all manner of red foods! Beets and tomatoes, and red beans and rice .... and....
  24. Hungarian paprika (sweet and/or hot) Cinnamon garlic thyme real butter (flavoring from)
  25. I think it is mostly always about being "just plain cheap". This assumes there are no spouses or kids involved as well ... As for spoilage, dumpsters, aside from the rodents, bugs, and vermin (who often inhabit them), are not known for their temperature controlled environments: hot in summer and freezing in winter ... As I said earlier, I am not impressed with it even being termed "a movement". latest update on Freegans ...
