I haven't met Tom, but he did a Q&A here on eGullet so we all got a chance to "know" him better through that. He also says he reads eGullet often. I know at least one person who is active on eG has met him but Tom is very protective of his privacy, and given how responsive and thorough he is I'm inclined to respect that.

Read all about Tom from the horse's mouth here.

I met Tom in the late 80's when he was Phyllis Richman's assistant. Had dinner with him several times. He has been to the restaurant that I work in many times since I've been there the last 6 years. He's a friendly, nice guy. He is also a journalist. He dropped a line on the live chat that he had dined with us in "deep disguise". Geeze, I hope I wasn't there that night.

I've corresponded with him, and even reserved restaurants for him when he stayed in Paris, but, unfortunately, never met him in person, as I was on vacation at that time.

Anti-alcoholics are unfortunates in the grip of water, that terrible poison, so corrosive that out of all substances it has been chosen for washing and scouring, and a drop of water added to a clear liquid like Absinthe, muddles it." ALFRED JARRY
