Weber's Drive-In

So yesterday we made an expedition to the Garden State for some berry picking: headed out to New Egypt and hit the strawberry fields. A couple of hours, lots of bad migrant worker jokes and twenty-five pounds of berries later, we were ALL set for some frosty root beers.

And what could have been better than Weber's Drive-In on Route 38? I've driven by, but never driven in before. Clearly a mistake; this is a terrific place. It's perfect for dirty, tired, berry-stained people: you get to eat in your car! They come around and attach a tray to your window! You get to flick your lights on and off for service! They have good hot dogs and hamburgers, and wonderful draft root beer! I have only one regret, and that's not having bought a gallon jug of root beer to take home... but there wouldn't have been much room with all those berries.

The place is like a trip back in time: not in an obnoxious, '50s themed diner kind of way, but the real thing, lovingly maintained. You gotta love that.

I've always been sorta scared of the concept of pork roll. (How do you roll pork? What's the role of pork in a pork roll?) I should probably overcome my fears, though. Perhaps psychoanalysis-- or another trip to Weber's-- is in order.

You are absolutely right about Weber's root beer. Heck, it's great even if you haven't just picked berries. I like the french fries too.

Holly, I have to slightly disagree with you on the pork roll there. If it's Andrew's first time then I'd suggest he have it "trenton style" - pork roll, on a "hard roll" (trentonese for something like what you philly guys call a kaiser roll) and cheese. Maybe onions.

Until recently you could buy "trenton pork roll" at Acme. It was also made by taylor. There was a place in Trenton called Tony Goes. (Unfortunately Tony has Gone). I'd get it as described above but with the additon of potatoes and peppers. I'm getting hungry now...

Over on the other side of the Delaware today for an appointment and to run a couple of errands. My growling stomach had me make a stop at Weber's for a hot dog, great shoestring fries and a big frosty mug of root beer. I just love this place. If the waitresses were on rollerskates it would complete the retro vibe, but honestly, they're so sweet and friendly you just have to love them (and overtip them to death). I can't believe the prices at this place! .99 for a gigantic mug of root beer in a real thick frosty glass mug. My entire lunch cost less than $5! The food isn't that great, although the fries are real good and the root beer alone is worth a trip. But still. This place is such an experience.

Agreed. Having grown up in Trenton (well, West Trenton anyway) the king of pork roll in my childhood was Case but a close second of course was Taylor. They were located literally around the block from each other in the day, the day that Trenton had 5 first run movie theatres that is.

As for Tony Goes, or more commonly known as Casino, it still is in both Trenton and Morrisville, PA. There is another thread on this board discussing their Italian hot dogs which I always enjoyed so much I never had the chance to get their pork roll sandwich.

There was a Tony Goes on Arena Drive. That's the one that is gone. I haven't been to Casino the see how the sandwiches compare.
