  1. Haven't been there. We are having brunch there tomorrow with the son of dear British friends and his wife. The wife selected the place. Good or bad? What to order or not to order? Do I need to dress frou-frou? I hope not or they won't let us in!! :raz:

Thanks for any advice! I'll let you know how it turns out.

  2. Cream of asparagus soup with roasted cashews.

Normally served with whole cashews and asparagus tips as a garnish, leave off the garnish,  this would make a nice soup for the guest.

Just take any good COA recipe, make that, toast a good amount of cashews, add them in and blend.

    Delicious.

Yum! That sounds great. I've got asparagus and was planning to make soup this weekend--I'll try it with the cashews! Got a favorite COA recipe you'd like to share? I was planning to wing it as usual.

Just start with some good chicken stock. Chop your asparagus and toss that in. Use your choice of seasonings, I like just a little thyme in mine. Simmer it until the asparagus is well done.

Add some heavy cream to your liking, and thicken with slurry or white roux. Add the toasted cashews and blend well.

I can't give you a ratio, when I make this soup, it's all by eye.

The soup should be a light pea green.

I prefer not to strain it. I think it has better body and flavor. But you have to blend it well, so no stringyness occurs from the fibres in the asparagus.

Check the seasoning and adjust, Salt and white pepper to taste.

I like to finish it with a little butter.

For those without swallowing difficulty, you can add some whole toasted cashews and asparagus tips as a garnish.

Thanks! I've got it on already and much the same, except I used dill instead of thyme and a splash of soy sauce. Haven't added the cashews yet, but can't wait to try it!

Edited to say/ask: I used potato starch as a thickener. Is potato starch the same as potato flour? My inquiring mind wants to know!

  3. I used to like them, but only when very stale--peep jerky, if you will. But I haven't allowed myself to have them in years, so I may have lost my taste for them.

Peep jerky! I love it! Much much better than Jones Peeps. Thank you!

You're quite welcome! I've called them (the way I eat them) that for years and everyone always knows exactly what I mean.

  5. Well, now that my cash flow is lower, thanks to my latest eating rampage, I suppose this is as good a time as any to try the Ikea $1.99 dinner special.

Aaaack! You get that right outta your system before we have lunch! I want a Chicago hot dog and none of Ikea's meatballs!

  6. Am I the only one who detests "little" fingers digging into buffets items? Or those who walk up and cough or sneeze in front of it? Not to mention the food sitting for God-knows-how-long without proper temperature control!

Yuck! I guess I'm too finicky for that. I prefer sanitary conditions for my food selection/consumption. Mind you, I'm talking public buffets where there are the hungry masses and their off-spring descending upon the tables unsupervised. Ewwwwww!

  7. Well, I was drooling over those pix! Unfortunately I'm going to be gone for a bit. Mom's having some major surgery in KCMO and I'm going back there to take care of her for a few weeks.

I won't have a computer/internet connection there (unless my sis takes pity on me and brings a laptop from Topeka), so won't even be in touch for the next one.

Keep posting those pix and maybe I can make #3!

  8. Well, shoot! My alleged spouse has been in LA for the last 2 days. He just informed me that a client in San Diego is having a crisis and he has to go there tomorrow. So, we're gonna miss this first one.

FZ, I look forward to seeing the pix and hope that we can make it for the next leg of the tour.

    Sorry!!!

  9. Bumping back up. Happy New Year!!!

Is there a plan of action yet? Where, what time, etc.?

Unless something comes up work-wise for Don, we are still in. And would be willing to pick up anyone north of us (Laguna Hills) that wants to go. Gaaaa! Now that I've said that I'm sure that something will come along to screw up our going. :hmmm:

  10. Since that is my birthday (Well, why the heck did you think there were all those parties?!?) and I don't like to go out that night, DH does the cooking. And his speciality is meatloaf, mashed potatoes and broccoli with cheese sauce. So, that is probably what we're having.

He did try once to make one of my favorites. Osso Buco. He spent the whole day on it and I came home from work sick as a dog and took about 2 bites. Since then, he's stuck to his meatloaf dinner. And that's just fine--he makes a great meatloaf!!

  11. Here is a listing of OC restaurants (searchable) from Cox.net. This is my cable company, so I don't know if it's member-only or not. If you can't access it let me know. In this restaurant listing you will find info about these restaurants:

    Memphis--very funky--casual--near So. Coast Plaza

Gypsy Den--funky but healthy--casual--near So. Coast Plaza

    Scott's Seafood--traditional seafood--near So. Coast Plaza

    In Newport Beach:

Pescadou--was a fabulous French place, but I understand it recently changed hands, so don't really know

    Golden Truffle--don't miss it!!

    La Cave--traditional steaks/seafood--late night music

And if you can get to Laguna Beach:

Cafe Zoolu--just a fun local place with terrific food--tiny

    I'm still thinking!
