Peanuts in the shell when at the ballpark. Freshly roasted whole almonds as a snack. Lightly salted pistachios as a snack as well. Hazelnuts are best with chocolate although pecans are great in brownies. And for some reason I like eating brazil nuts on Passover. Basically, there isn't a nut I dislike.
I infuse sugar syrup with it. Then I use the syrup in things like sorbet - my favorite is mango lemongrass. I've also used it in a sachet to infuse rhubarb soup (Francois Payard's recipe)
Most mornings I go the cereal (Honey Bunches of Oats or Coco Pebbles) and milk route, but in the winter I go for oatmeal. When there's no milk in the house I eat yogurt. A glass of orange or grapefruit juice and a vitamin C capsule round out the meal.
I don't think of egg as a flavor. Rather, it's a different dough. Which means it messes with tradition. Therefore it's verboten Bloviatrix, the bagel nazi
The only acceptable flavors for bagels are: plain, onion, sesame, poppy, garlic, salt, everything, pumpernickle and cinnamon raisin. Anything else, particularly fruit is sacrelige.
Seth -- if you're still jonesing for gooseberries(and have time to hop the subway), try Locust Grove at Union Square on wednesday. They should have them.
I've always wondered who realized the truffle was edible. And to expand on fungi further - who determined what mushrooms were ok to eat and which were poisonous?
I have the weekend off. We're going to friends in New Jersey. Therefore, my toughest decision was "what to bring as a hostess gift." I've settled on a bottle of Bowmore, 15 year old.
This bothers me, but I've seen worse when it comes to fruit -- here in Manhattan, many of the markets have fruit displays on the street. I've seen people grab a handful of cherries and continue on their way. Because, afterall it's the job of the market to provide free snacks to everyone who pass by.
They're a cross between a plum and apricot. They became the "hot new fruit" a couple of years ago. You can probably find them in your local market. Read about them here.
No, and I haven't spotted them at the Gump's store, either. Just spoke with the 800-number available on the Gump's website. They don't have a clue but *suggest* it may only be offered through the Gump's store in San Francisco. As it is still morning here on the West, they aren't open yet to further the investigation... Bergdorf Goodman in NYC is carrying the china. Just today I went looking for them. They don't have any on display, although the saleswoman I talked with pulled a dinner plate out from an order to show me. She also let me take a look at the brochure which shows all the pieces available. The dishes come in two styles - solid white and white on white to mimic the check on chef pants.
