  1. Checked fridge just now... Ingred: jellyfish, salt It definitely looks dried! Now, does anyone know what to do with it ? - Weka
  2. Ok, the dish I had was a cold dish, as I recall. But even so, I don't know how it was prepared. The tempura concept is intriguing though. I wonder if jellyfish can stand up to something like that. - Weka
  3. Hello, When I ate at the Mandarin Kitchen in London, I had the opportunity to try a dish whose main component was jellyfish. Recently, I found some jellyfish in North Carolina of all places. Does anyone have a good recipe for jellyfish? Sincerely - Weka
  4. Ok...exams over and just learned to do some Latin Dancing for the first time last night...so for Varmint a bit more on that China One dinner. On past experience I pushed for the shellfish in black bean sauce. I don't think anyone was disappointed in the clams in black bean sauce that arrived steaming on our table in their little clay pot with the hint of garlic in it and a wonderful green long leafed vegetable. I know someone else in our group id'd it, but I can't recall what it was. Also the only deviations off the chinese menu to the regular restaurant menu were the broccoli dish and the Hunan Chicken. Both quite nice but more in line with standard good Chinese restaurant versions. For those who haven't tried a Hunan Chicken before, it is a mildly spicy chicken, non-fried, where the sauce is the spicy component. No where near as hot as a Szechuan Chicken though. I am happy to help anyone regarding advice on vet school and have pm'ed accordingly. I would really really like to hit that southern vegetarian Indian restaurant in Cary before I leave town for the summer around the 14th of May. Would anyone be up for going before then. I think the place is called "The Towers?" Anyone? Also does anyone know if there are really active egullet gaggles in either Cape Cod or Bay area, CA. I'll be in Woods Hole about an hour or so from Boston with transport, mid-May to mid-June. There must be folks in Boston! Then I will be in Palo Alto just south of San Francisco, maybe with transport, to be determined, mid-June to mid-Aug. I can just bumble on to the appropriate forums, of course, but thought I would ask for advice here first. Cheers - Weka
  5. Maybe Taro, rather than turnips? Have to go to bed as big exam tomorrow and no more time to write right now.
  6. Chops - I took my inlaws to Anson's for Thanksgiving Dinner in 2002. Not bad, but then also on that trip we went to Elizabeth's in Savannah and in my book the two meals were incomparable. Elizabeth's outdid Anson's food, value and ambience wise. I may be jaded though as that was the first time I ever ate Thanksgiving dinner in a restaurant and I have a soft spot for Elizabeth's. I have nothing negative to say about Anson's though and do remember the service was good and the food quite fine. Cute location too. - Weka
  7. Random Alias - Have you made that China One reservation yet? I might have 2 more for you. Could go for a little pre-finals Cantonese food! <<Added: Actually, make that a definite 2, my husband and I.>> - Weka
  8. Hi all, Just a confirmation that Varmint is correct on the Weka +1 and the dish listed. See you all there. - Weka
  9. Rachel - Would it make sense to have a separate CafePress store for this event then? This way the regular eGullet store isn't wrapped up in it and the prices can be different. There isn't too much involved with setting one up, is there? I briefly read through the information on their site and it doesn't look too onerous. What do you think? - Weka
  10. Varmint - Considering that your costs, pig, tent and, of course garbage detail post event :-), among other things will be considerable, I think that the shirt price should reflect a donation towards costs. While other folks have travel costs these are within their personal control, their choice. You, however, have a definite fixed cost in hosting the event on your property at a minimum standard and comfort level that takes into account uncontrollable elements like weather. This is a fixed cost that should be supported by the many as opposed to the one because we all will benefit from it. As long as it is clear cut and known to all what a method for contributing to this fixed cost is I don't see why on earth anyone should complain. Besides people love to get something for their contributions/participation or why else do we get shirts, socks and coffee mugs for all the volunteer work and donations we make in this society. Besides only in an alternate universe could shirt sale profits make more than a small dent in your outlay. Let's hope such an alternate universe prevails. What do other folks think? - Weka
  11. or even - chocolate covered hobnobs
  12. Ok...sounds like you folks had a blast. But I read through this whole thread awaiting the pics, particularly to see how dark your gumbo broth was and am sorely disappointed to see none Same weekend, I burned myself badly when out of my shiny new giant pot flew two droplets of the oil from my latest roux. The worst part was that I failed to see it and respond with ice as I was so intent on achieving that dark mahogany colour. Amazing the speed with which oil achieves a second degree blister burn. Glad to see no such side effects occurred in Warrenville. - Weka
  13. Despite the quotes, warranted or not. This is a useful article to someone new to the area. Thanks for posting the link, Varmint. - Weka
  14. Well I'm not going to compete with another's bread pudding so I guess I will have to consider a change of dish to gumbo. - Weka
  15. Varmint - With you 100% on the above. Certainly Dave should be a key reviewer and decider, if there are multiple designs that have the logo or any other official design tie. I was also hoping that he could provide any official guidelines to the logo's usage. In terms of profit, none sought here and from what foodie wrote it seems to be a cover costs pricing. Although $3 shipping per shirt is a little steep. Must be hand courier delivered. - Weka
  16. Foodie - Just spoke to my sis and she is really up for this. She'll design it gratis and put it in the best form to meet the goal costs. Guidelines from the shirt company would be hers to follow when you choose them. She says you can limit the number of inks among other techniques like one side of the shirt only in order to cap the costs. All she asks is that she can put the artwork in her portfolio and that she gets a free shirt. So here is what she would need to get flying: - colors we want in, colors we don't want to see the light of day - might be useful to pick the bgd color of the shirt material or state desire to go with multiple - I take it we want the egullet logo, but which incarnation of colors might be a useful thing to know, is there an official one. I have seen a couple different schemes. (See home page and top of the discussion forum, for example.) - names, dates, credits - i.e. all the writing we want on it (see first attempt below) - overall style we would like to go with - e.g. the one posted earlier which I can send her is rather cartoony and light In terms of words maybe... Varmint's Pig Pickin' 11 October 2003 *could add first annual :-)* Raleigh, NC *or do we need North Carolina* Egullet...egulletarian...or some such... Has someone thought that bit through more than I obviously haven't. What is obviously absent in the above is that killer one-liner. - Weka
  17. Whoa...strange that you bring up Starbucks, Tony. One truly did appear on my nearest shopping corner yesterday. It was the first day and a bit of a laugh to watch the staff tumble over each other. Mocha liquid goo squelched down the front of one bloke and they couldn't find the coffee beans they were giving out for free with those $20 cards. I just sat on a comfy chair and soaked it up, along with a few free samples, before ambling around the corner to be accosted by another franchise's mascot, this time Maggie Moo. My god I have moved to a suburban hell hole. Interestingly the Starbucks had a Fortune 100 best company to work for sticker on the door, so I suppose they have bi-laws and what not along the line's of what the other Tony mentions. Do franchises like these have stronger employer responsibility codes, typically? - Weka
  18. My sister might be up for it....she is an instructor in all things adobe and other things computer graphic and does some stuff like that on the side. She is building a portfolio for grad school so likely might be up for it gratis. And she is likely attending the pickin'. Want me to ask her? - Weka
  19. Foodie, Make sure you see a t-shirt sample before you ship them off to that hotel else we all might be running about with "Pig Porkin'", "Pog Pickin'", "Big Pickin'" or some other such nonsense on our chests. Or will it be backs? - Weka

    Wine by the Glass

There is a wine/cafe/restaurant near the main tram stop on Leidseplein in Amsterdam, The Netherlands that lets you pick bottles and pour as much as you like. You get charged for what you drink. They measure, with a ruler, what remains in the bottle and do a quick subtraction. No need to worry about number of ounces there. Have never found an equivalent place with good wine here in the US. If memory serves me correctly, the place in Amsterdam might be called CafeCox. - Weka
  21. Varmint - Looks like you need to ammend that count for me to Weka +2 and climbing. Husband is a definite. My little sis' is going to fly in from CT that weekend. Also, I am working on a friend from High Point who plays guitar and banjo and is into any sort of local festival/get together. He hails from Philly. Who knows what else will happen between now and then. Also, my offer to help out still stands. However, unlike some folks on here I never have much of a detailed schedule several months in advance. But, I am happy to report though that the vet school sets us all free at 3:25 p.m. on Oct. 8th, the Wed. So I am off on both the Thurs. and Fri. and should be able to lend a big last minute hand. I also have a good sized kitchen as mentioned earlier, if overflow an cooking/staging area is needed. By the way, please let me know if the pig gets too big for your bathtub as it might be able to fit in one of mine. I'm back in Cary now and thankful for that wonderful list of restaurants and wine joints that just came out on this thread. Still finding my way around here, but so far no complaints. - Weka

    scotch whiskey

Found myself drizzling a little Oban in something the other day!...maybe it is time to have a few cheaper blended's on hand. For that matter it is time to settle down and reconstruct the liquor cabinet contents that I gave away to all my friends when I went abroad in '94. Somehow, I don't think any of those bottles are still in service. Shame... Anyone leaving for Europe and need to lose their liquor collection because the movers won't pack it? Thanks for the beer-whiskey recall, eat2much. Still can't get my head around whether I would like such a combo with pasta. But then the first time I did a rigatoni al vodka, I had reservations as well and they were unfounded. - Weka
  23. This sounds great Varmint...they're a great band. Maybe try that Irish pub on the road parallel to Glenwood, can't recall the name right now. But I saw another band there a while back and they have lots of space, mult. rooms for people to mill around in there. Also they have a fairly active music schedule. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone in the mgmt of that place. - Weka

    scotch whiskey

Oh also, regarding those dogs. Some of them just interbred with the dogs the pakehas, white settlers brought, too. The breed doesn't exist in its pure form anymore so far's I know. - Weka

    scotch whiskey

But back on the subject of scotch whiskey, what type of beer went well with it in that pasta dish? I never thought of mixing those two together, eat2much. - Weka
