  1. I didn't say that people who like Food Network can't post on eGullet, I said I'd hate for eGullet to become another Food Network. That's the last I'm going to say on the topic, obviously, I'm not getting anywhere.
  2. Well, may I surmise the reason you don't, is exactly because they do things like this? eGullet is unique in many ways, being active on other "foodie" forum boards, I know this to be true. I'd hate to take away what's unique about this place just to cater to the masses and I hate for eGullet to go that way. And honestly, if eGullet became another Food Network, I would no longer read it.
  3. I was quoting @weinoo about Food Network and if you like Food Network, you can always visit Food Network, there's nothing wrong with that? I'm not shaming anyone, @ImportantElements is new here and maybe older members, (weinoo and I) aren't crazy about the challenge? I think you're reading way too much into my comment.
  4. I read the topic differently, it seemed that the purpose was to create a $5 meal. While that is a worthy cause, I never prepare a meal thinking, "I can make this for $5." I prepare meals thinking, "this is going to be delicious." If it's $5, that's great, but it's not a priority of mine. YMMV.
  5. I wasn't going to say anything, but eating "cheap" and ignoring quality, isn't that the antithesis of eGullet? I mean, it's great if you can do it, but it seems to be an afterthought. I'd rather read about great food. And I don't feel bad posting this, because OP can post this at any other forum and get lots of participation, but I'd like to see eGullet as Food-Network-Free as possible.
  6. @Honkman I respectfully disagree, I think LoS has been blown out of proportion because of TV specials, James Beard, Chowhound and tourists, Chada is an excellent Thai restaurant as is Arawan and Penn's Thai. I admit, I enjoy LoS but it has become a hassle and as a result of the hype, price has been inflated. It is a shame because I remember years ago, like over a decade ago, it was a local gem. As is life, I wish them well and I'm happy for their success. @C Simril I don't go to Strip restaurants often and honestly, I don't go to the ones you mentioned. Most of them were one and done deals for me. I live in Las Vegas, so my list is from a PoV from a local. Oh, who am I kidding? My husband lives for Buffet @ Asia and my co-worker just told me that Metro Pizza is the best pizza in the world. To each their own.
  7. I've been to LoS many times, I no longer go, because... of the tourists. I go to Chada to get my Thai fix, or Arawan, or just good old Thai Food To Go for a cheap, quick meal. I only go to LoS when an out-of-towner asks to go, and that's been awhile.
  8. Here's my list, aka Restaurants On Smokeydoke's Regular Rotation: Fine Dining (or my definition of fine dining, which is anyplace over $100pp and you'll feel funny wearing shorts) Bazaar Meat Estiatorio Milos Yonaka Harvest by Roy Ellamar Foodie Destinations (not exactly fine dining, but you have to be willing to spend some to get good food) Momofuku Sparrow & Wolf (I wasn't crazy about this place after my first visit, but it showed promise, and definitely a place I want to support) Gordon Ramsey Burger Chada Thai and Wine Pub 1842 Hobak Korean BBQ Casual The Great Greek Pizza Rock or Little Tony's Penn's Thai Asian BBQ and Noodle YuXiang Bakery Suzuya Places you'll never see Smokeydoke at: Palace Station Oyster Bar Hotel Buffets Strip Steak Houses (this is more personal preference than anything) Yardbird Carbone (again, a personal preference thing, there's devoted fans) Any place inside Caesar Forum shops Giada
  9. @C Simril I ate the langostine fritter at Atelier 8 years ago! Wow, jog through memory lane, I had to go back to my long-defunct blog to find it. I've got reservations for Yonaka in May, they went to kaiseki-style dining only. I love that place, I will do a full write up after my visit. I hope the recent bad reviews are false. I'm going to Milos on my birthday later this month.
  10. @C Simril I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. I heard about e, but I hesitated to go because of the price, however I'm determined to go now. China Poblano gets mixed reviews, so I've been turned off. As for Bazaar Meat, I thought almost every dish was excellent and perfectly executed. I don't eat at restaurants that specialize in gastronomy often, so this was a treat. I'm sure there's people who balk at $16 paper-thin slices of jamon, but not me, this was exactly what I was looking for. I'll avoid the dishes you mentioned, I'm sad to hear about the olives, as it piqued my curiosity, but $16 for olives is outrageous. I have a feeling his restaurant is a mixture of major wins and major fails, as most gastronomy restaurants are. Julian Serrano is on my very long list of restaurants to try, I'll be sure to tag you if I ever go, but I don't report on restaurants that I didn't think were amazing. Maybe you can come up with a list of your "best of"? I can get a sense of the diner when he composes a list of what he likes best.
  11. I've just started browsing, I admit, I am not a fan of Mexican food, but that's my shortcoming, not theirs. Honestly, I don't know where to start, their Quesadilla con Repollo de Bruselas (Brussel sprouts quesadilla) sounds interesting. I'm open to suggestions.
  12. @dcarch I agree, I'm a bit proponent of artificial white light
  13. @tino27 your Instagram has beautiful photos! Do you cook the food yourself? It reminds me, again and again, lighting is everything. Everything else is secondary, even the food, LOL. I do have a lot of what you've described, I'm lazy (or indifferent?) to always use them. I have a big foam core board, tracing paper, and I even have a do-dad to create white light artificially, much like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GIL6EU4/ref=asc_df_B01GIL6EU45436177/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=394997&creativeASIN=B01GIL6EU4&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167143377764&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=16391143825476397954&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9051910&hvtargid=pla-367303678037 Here's some of my better stuff I've done in a light box: Chicken Curry Asparagus and Fontina Cheese Pizza:
  14. @blue_dolphin How do you like Nopalito?
  15. Smokeydoke

    Popsicles

@blue_dolphin I'm thinking of making a bunch of these in ice cubes, then popping them in my blender in the morning and drinking it on the way to work.

    Popsicles

@blue_dolphin Can I ask what mold you use? Those look gorgeous, I'd like to try making them.
  17. Thanks everyone. Definitely a different bowl would've helped. I'll try cooking it again, maybe make the sauce with one set of mushroom, then strain, they replace with fresh mushroom scattered on top. With the onions, I'll strain and toss. Or I can just write it off as one of those dishes that won't photograph well.
  18. I got another doozy. This is Diana Henry's Chicken Forestiere. It is delicious. It looks like dog vomit. Halp. I'll start, the bowl selection was so so wrong. Maybe something more not so busy? But what else can I do? The dish must have mushrooms. The sauce is an off-putting white. I am at a loss. It's a shame too, because it's such a delicious dish, perfect for sharing.
  19. Has anyone tried cooking from it yet?

    Dinner 2018

At first I thought it was a gorilla, or a small bear.

  22. @ImportantElements Have you seen the eGullet Recipe Cook-off Index thread? I think you'll enjoy perusing the various threads about dishes that eGullet members have made. You can also post your dishes there.
  23. I think Piglet is retarded and I stopped reading a long time ago. Having said that, I thought that review was great! Finally, a celebrity-reviewer that feels like she should be on that site AND sounds like someone who can cook. I loved it. I don't know what to make of a lot of their "celebrity reviewers" though. I don't know where they find these people? Sorry for the interlude: I just had to remark, I was so surprised to see a good Piglet review. Back to your regular schedule programming. Actually, I liked it so much, I'm going to comment on their website. (I'm not a big fan of Food52)
  24. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Hazan's Bolognese Sauce https://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1015181-marcella-hazans-bolognese-sauce Sorry for the crappy photo, it tastes much better than it looks. I don't know if it's my "favorite" but it has been in the Smokey household for years. It's a once-a-year, labor-of-love, kinda thing. Makes great filling for lasagna too.
