  1. Something from a tackle box. Fish spoons
  2. While I'm not the guy to offer wine advice, SaxChik, I wanna send my good wishes on you engagement. As for the Duling-Kurtz House, is it a great setting. I was very impressed by the meal I had there a couple of years ago. I'm sure you'll have a great feast.
  3. Now that's the breakfast of champions! You could twist my arm...
  4. The same fellow who brought the Stock's pound cake to the office told me about Gaeta's. It's his go-to pizza spot, even tho' it's a hike; seems their roots trace back to a Mt. Airy area place from his youth. I'd like to go there; this crew has had pizza in the park before. There are so many potential spots on the list. We had a winner with La Rosa's, but word of burned mouth is better than anchovy roulette.
  5. I just returned from tonight's dinner and it was all that! I tasted everything all at our table; top shelf! If I were able to return tomorrow, I would. Thanks to Todd and his staff for a great meal and thanks to Jeff for organizing.
  6. Four letters to the editor in today's Inky - 5/22 - page b2. I didn't see them on the web edition. Here's the conclusion of each: Erin Smith - Collegeville: "Let's ban foie gras in Philadelphia!" Joyce Weiss - Wynnewood: "Who elects these people?" Judy Wicks - Philadelphia: "These practices are not natural; they are barbaric." Laurence Steinberg - Philadelphia: "With people like Kelly in charge, it's little wonder that Philadelphia is in such a sorry state. The paper qualifies one submission with: "Wicks owns the White Dog Cafe in Philadelphia."
  7. Bad description of the famous 'tude. Be ready to order when you get to the window, or backa-da-line!
  8. Even if they knew, tourists would have a tough time eating at John's because of the workingman's hours. Since John's closes before cocktail hour, the 2am-bars-are-closed gang is SOL. The hours issus is shared by many locals. Holly's right that Tony Luke's is in a different league than the first name joints.
  9. This is in the June issue that hit my mailbox today. The Grey Lodge and Southwark are the Philly winners. The article uses about a dozen icons for the qualities the contributors appreciate. Both winners hit for good conversation, which speaks well for our fair city. The Grey Lodge also gets a nod for a little rowdy, really cheap and great for daytime drinking while Southwark hits for no TV and excellent bartenders. Grey Lodge didn't get a nod for outstanding jukebox. Since I've not had an expense account for over 20 years, I can't relate to the really expensive quality; I'm glad those are in other cities. Better than more talk about mouse droppings, eh?
  10. If they inspekt the way they spel, we're luckee 2 B a live.
  11. The Marra's loaded pie was one of the best I've ever had. The huge slice I reheated yesterday was still pretty good, altho' the sharp prov didn't have the bite it had on Sunday afternoon. Their plain was fine (great crust,) but I prefer fresh mozz on such a basic pie. I'm not much of a Sicilian pie fan, as they tend to be doughy and unevenly cooked. Not so with LaRosa's convection oven, even with the loaded pie we had. (You can see the add-on blower box at the top right of the photo.) They had to extra bake our pie, due to all those toppings. It was the day's pleasant surprise. And you can stop by just for a slice.
  12. If it weren't for Pizza Club, I might never have stumbled over your most excellent blog, Sandy. Notes to self: There's more to eGullet than the PA forum. Find out if those New Yorkers still need thermometers and calipers to eat burgers.
  13. And on the same page is "Give a brief description of the dish," (1 pepper.) Brought to you by the nouns fluency and proofreading.
  14. Now that we're scheduled (again,) count me in!
  15. The best part is right after the meal. The restaurant did the heavy lifting, but you get the kudo for making the reservation.
  16. So how does it compare to Tony Luke's? ← I prefer John's. I've never done an a - b taste test, so I'll say the pork's a toss-up. I give my nod to John's for the greens and the seeded roll. Mom at John's told me she serves spinach because rabe is too bitter. I agree - less bitter is more better as it lets the bite come thru from the sharp prov.
  17. The Cheesesteak Italian from Dakota Pizza Company in Wynnewood is my local favorite. They're in the shopping center just west of Sang Kee Asian Bistro on Lancaster Avenue. I also get steaks from Mama's Pizzeria on Belmont Avenue in Bala-Cynwyd, but they're on the radar. As a public service, I'll check out that place a couple-a posts upthread. Originally, I thought it was Pacilio's Pizza on Glenbrook Ave., but that's directly south of the hospital near the Wawa.
  18. Stealing Andrew Fenton's line, that's living sous vide loca!
  19. We each paid $50 (plus service) for the the dinner that started this thread. (July, 2002) It has taken Shola a few years to reach the still a bargain $100 price (gratuity included.) I've organized a couple, been a last minute replacement (twice - with strangers wise enough to book a dinner,) and eagerly accepted several other opportunities. If Ben Franklin lived today, perhaps the famous quote would be - Studiokitchen is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. I'm sure I'll be happy again...
  20. More like - be a smoky person until well washed. Was it worth it? Absolutely!
  21. I had the pleasure of hosting DisCanto, five talented musicians from Abruzzo, at a concert at my home last night. Then I learned that the Italian term for jam session is "jam session," which lasted until 1. They will be performing next Saturday afternoon (March 18) at Tastes of the Avenue on Passyunk and again at Giuliano Hazan's How to Cook Italian dinner at Davio's on March 26th. I'm planning to make the former, for sure!
  22. Rittenhouse Square - Friday, March 10, 2006 Assistant: Chef, the eGullet letter has arrived. Chef: Send our response immediately, and be certain that we follow-up next week. The above is purely speculative, of course. Anybody running a successful business will attempt to resolve a customer issue with alacrity. That's why I found this thread's timing premature. It either would never have appeared or surfaced as a "restaurant does a good deed" story. As the restaurateurs have posted, serious customer feedback would not be ignored. And some reader may have gone elsewhere last night.
  23. I think it is unfair to post your letter before Chef LaCroix has had an opportunity to respond. I think it would be have been fair to tell about your experience. I think your issues are valid. The meal is over, but correspondence has just started.
  24. I knew I couldn't do LaCroix justice the day after the Meat-a-thon, but I'm not as tall as Philadining.
  25. Pokeweed is a very common plant ... Also known as poke salet. ← Tony Joe White had a 1969 hit, Poke Salad Annie, later covered by Elvis during his fat guy shouldn't be playing Vegas in a jumpsuit days. Tony Joe, who also wrote "Rainy Night in Georgia," hails from Louisiana, where the aligators grow so mean. Poke and canned salet pics link
