  1. Dunno about best" but New Deck Tavern has half priced wings (all aps) and bargain drinks during happy hour. This thread "made" me detour there before the train today and the wings were pretty good.
  2. That's the ticket, Bob, two chefs Cary Neff. As I recall, the chef of color had a really big blender.
  3. No question the boss knows his oysters... Google him for something very funny!
  4. Holly, I see this as an entrepreneur, also. Coincidentally, I've run a client's computer shop for 22 years. Last year they decided to move "my" function into their internal IT organization, eliminating my gig. I've commented for a while that I've been building my own gallows. I've been standing on the trapdoor with a noose around my neck since I converted their data from "my" system earlier this month. While I won't claim to have done nothing wrong, I'm proud of the job I've done. Lousy consultants don't have 22 year engagements. Whether their decision was fair doesn't matter; it was theirs to make. Perhaps the RTM charter says something other than business is business and management makes management decisions. Sometimes these decisions are made for wrong reasons, but so what? If I've missed something, well, I've been really busy. This is nothing personal, of course, just my perspective. Best regards, Stretch
  5. Since I'm infrequently near RTM at lunch time, this issue has little effect on me. I have a hard time believing that RTM management is the evil empire and Rick is pure as new fallen snow. Tony Lukes could merely be taking advantage of a fortunate opportunity or they could be the grey one in Spy vs. Spy vs. Spy. We'll never know. As long as there's a market, it will have cheesesteaks. Some lucky business will have the franchise, for which they should pay appropropriately. I'm hoping for a rapid resolution 'cause comparisons between RTM and Bush take sammies few of us eat regularly much too seriously.
  6. Sunday's Inky says Rick's cancels rally, but impasse remains
  7. Black cherry and lemon on my first visit. The former wasn't sticky sweet like most red ice, maybe because it was purple And the other wasn't quite as tart or zesty as I'd have liked, but mighty good just the same. And, unless there's someplace in Ardmore I don't know, it's the closest to home for me. I'll be back.
  8. That's why there's a soft opening. Too bad you aren't on the list; you could "rant" privately.
  9. If I were in this situation, I'd be thinking of spending my time in Tahiti rather than in court.
  10. Saturday is "Save Rick's, Save The Market Day." Check the "news update" section at philly.com - perhaps there will be a more reliable url later...
  11. The fastest gun in the west draws quite a line in the sand... How's that for mixing metaphors?
  12. True, indeed. The M thread around this message celebrates the Shola guest chef dinner followed by talk about the closing.
  13. Go to Rick's for the litigation special...
  14. I think Bill Green cashed out while Manayunk was still hip.
  15. I guess that's what can happen once you start serving D-list celebrities.
  16. The bad news is that we have too many plastic surgeons and overpriced homes (and glossy magazines) but not enough good restaurants. I was thinking about a strip steak tonight...there's been a lot of buzz about a local place.
  17. Ah, the classic 10 pound bag problem... ...very timely at the beginning of the summer!
  18. The tiny stalk provided a subtle taste buzz last night with no reminder this morning
  19. The man is an established Philadelphia columnist. It is his job to write his opinion; that it is controversial is what his publisher wants. Opinion means he's not presenting the 4ws and an h from journalism 101. Yesterday, city council voted 9-8 on a knee-jerk issue that's OT here. I don't want to see a similar action restricting a restauranteur's right to choose what's on the menu.
  20. My sister flew into Philadelphia so that we could travel to Vermont for my son's graduation over Memorial Day weekend. We were out and about in Philly on Thursday. Since our upscale meal was at Mandoline, and they deserve the bump, I'll put my post here. But we started at Johnny's Hot where I introduced her to roast pork Italiano and we had a sausage sammie and a dog. Her response to the pork was like many others - why does everybody talk about cheesesteaks? After bopping around the city for most of the day, including a stops at Isgro's and Fante's and the Japanese exhibit at the Art Museum, we had dinner at Mandoline. We had the duck "carpaccio" and the standby goat cheese cake for apps followed by a rack of lamb and bouillabaisse. Since Mimi hails from Austin, she wanted to have some seafood and I know Todd would have something good to offer. The fish stew really hit the spot for her and she raved about the subtle use of five spice with the duck. I was a happy camper with 5 lambsicles with fresh veggies. Even with the prix fixe no longer available, Mandoline remains a good value for terrific food. Just go there. We got back Monday afternoon to do some faves at Sang Kee. Since Szechuan Tasty House was closed, so we didn't have to choose. Then we sampled the Capogiro's strawbery flavors (tarragon & and cream) with wild honey and grapefruit Campari.
  21. I'm for Saturday, June 2 to include Osteria at 5pm for egged pizza dessert.
  22. Me thinks you mean twins don't you? ← LaBan mentored a high school senior project team for the cheesesteak article. Since those kids graduated in 2002, their research is a bit long in the tooth, so to speak.
  23. Kinda like this thread, eh?(Just sayin'.)
  24. Today's Inky (5/23) teases about LaBan's "quest for great burgers" in tomorrow's food section.
  25. Cheaper than cocktails, particularly since most fly on one wing from Capogiro. About the same as mrbigjas' suggestion of taking a 40 down to the Wissahickon, if you figure in the SEPTA token.
