  1. My virtual dinner with Philadining... ...since we haven't broken bread together for a while, I had a virtual dinner with Philadining tonight. Similar store, similar order. Mine was take-out from here: Steamed watercress dumplings also contain shrimp and pork. The Wynnewood steam or fried meat or vegetarian or chicken dumplings come in fours. I guess that's so you can buy several varieties. But I prefer these and I have some for another day. I really like the subtle sweetness of the noodle soup's roast pork. General Tso's doesn't have the sauce on the side in suburbia. Damn republicans! You see the only hot little pepper. I've avoided chicken since that college summer I worked for the Colonel, but this is a good dish. Could use more kick... I also got a small container of brown rice and a few fortune cookies for my $24. There's an orange LCB sign in the window in Wynnewood - looks like a liquor license is coming. Hopefully, Phil, we'll have a face to face dinner in the near future.
  2. You mean this one? Perhaps it was the byline. Interesting 3Ms, those...
  3. I'd like to do some Center City spots. We've done Pietro's and Mama Palma's, but we've also done Marra's twice. Not everybody has a SEPTA pass, so it would be nice if we could walk between/among spots. I've an aversion to pizza with white linen. It's so hard to get rid of those gravy stains! semi-OT: I've been to Franco & Luigi's on a Thursday night for dinner and the accordion man. It's great fun, kind of like the people's Victor's. One of the early Pizza Clubs was at their Stadium Club, where we we comped a Christmas pie. The story's way upthread.
  4. Sadly, the Phillies bullpen did its thing again tonight. But I was there with a group and our tickets included a voucher. While it pitched a dog and a soda, the fine print said good for $7 at any stand. I got on line at Tony Lukes about 6:40. I cleared the stand as the national anthem started, carrying two roast pork sammies and two foam cup of broccoli rabe. Good sammie! Around the 7th, one of my colleagues gave me two more vouchers, so I picked up a couple of Schmitters®. There were a bunch ready (over ready, actually,) but my buddy can't eat onions so his was cooked to order witout. If you're there late in the game, drop one of the ingredients to get a freshly made sandwich. (Or request no dressing, then ask for just a little before it's wrapped.) Also a good sammie. Either's a real winner at the ballpark. I didn't need that second sandwich, but I'm going to Alinea with Ronnie Suburban in October and I haven't had a three hour plus meal since Shola closed SK. So I'll consider it training table.
  5. Dunno about Tony Luke's vs. Aramark, but I read the DP article and concluded that I've never been, and hope I'll never be, so hungry I'd eat a vegan hot dog.
  6. What's hydrodgy shortening? Is this a food allergy issue? ← I imagine it's short for hydrogenated fats... <snip> ← Bingo! (although you left out that butter is in a different universe of flavor, as well - far superior) ← Which makes it a silly question. Who would serve Tastykakes at a serious dessert business? (Tastykakes have their place, but I would never expect, say, Shola to serve me one.) Since the Thomas Sweet folks are involved in Naked Chocolate, I'll bet the only place they'd not use butter is to offer a "low" fat option buried deep on their menu. I think a low fat chocolate dessert is almost as ridiculous as low fat foie gras. If you want less fat, eat a smaller portion.
  7. Google confirmed my understanding that Bootsie in Philly refers to tenor wizard Bootsie Barnes. But you can get what they call a Kobe Beef hot dog at Bootsie's Philly.
  8. What's hydrodgy shortening? Is this a food allergy issue? If we're looking for lower fat, we could exclude the chocolate. But that would trivialize this thread (and the cafe.)
  9. Jell-OMyGod?
  10. StudioKitchen exists only in our memories today. The name is no longer on the doorbell. There is some discussion in the posts from this spring on this thread.
  11. I'd say Estia is cheeky to say "long time established." Of course, we're talkin' rumors here, and Estia has been around longer than Applebees at Bookies.
  12. Went to the Bustleton Avenue Steve's with my son last night. It's his favorite steak place, in part because it's quicker than South Philly from Lower Merion. I had a cheeze wit', he had a mushroom, provolone wit'. It was still light outside and they were busy, but not so busy that we couldn't sit together at the counter sharing spicy fries and talkin' baseball while we waited. (Utley's the man. Abreu will put the $$$Yankees$$$ over the top - damn, damn, damn!) You can get the picture from the Holly's page. The thing that's striking to me about Steve's is the long, lean look. These aren't fat sammies, but so what? The grilled meat isn't chopped, so each piece becomes a little bowl for its liquor as it's cooked. When it's finished with spoonful of precooked onions and a ladle of Whiz, it's damn good eatin'. Holly said, "...as good as any in Philadelphia." and eso es bueno con mí.
  13. I made the same New York reference when we had Minneola at StudioKitchen earlier this year, Andrew. You were suffering thru Roma, as I recall. Too bad you didn't get to be a guest at SK, Vadouvan. That place was the shizzy.
  14. What's funny, in the best way possible, is that one of those things will happen. Phil would say, "Foodie friends rock."
  15. Inky obit here.
  16. Do they have steaks that look like tempeh?
  17. Yesterday's Inky says people accept a two hour wait for chain food. Suburban dining: First you wait I'm reminded of the old joke Woody Allen used in an early film - The food here is terrible! Yes, and such small portions. While almost all of us had that half-hour wait at the bar take 90 minutes, who finds this necessary (or acceptable?) I live in the 'burbs, but I couldn't tell you the last time I dined at a mall.
  18. I suspect that is Le Virtu, which has not yet open. This old Inky link says last spring, but "best laid plans..." They served that tasty duck breast at the Passyunk tent last spring with the Book & Cook.
  19. Yeah, he didn't like anything -- two stars worth. Go cry in your milkshake.
  20. No relation, Charlie's, the burger joint in Folsom makes old fashioned shakes in a big stainless cup. Just like the old days - this place has been there since then. You see many pairs sharing one shake as they gobble their tasty burgers. It's actually around the corner (1 lot back toward Philly) from the corner mentioned in Holly's site. Worth finding.
  21. I had a friend from Las Cruces who was working here. Her comment about her local cuisine (?) reminded me of my youth in Utah. They eat a lot of Jello. I think UT is Jello's per capita capital. So what is New Mexican food?
  22. Are we talking Saturday (6/24) or Sunday (6/25?) I'm away on Saturday. But this is pizza club, so it's not all about me. BTW, we did Tony's last year with the Armenian pizza place in the far Northeast.
  23. But I want to be open on Sunday because over 30% of my business comes from food. Looks like it's time for a Philadelphia lawyer.
  24. Primo's is on the north side of Chestnut in the 20xx block.
  25. Haven't been down this year, but I chose a Schmitter last year to beat the other Philly sammie lines. Not Chestnut Hill, but pretty good. Certainly not dollar dog value, which I valued several times at another game. Unless something's done about that pitching, lines won't be a problem...
