Huh? ← Once you have to splain a joke, it loses its humor. Capaneus ain't lookin' for tube steaks; that's the joke. Yocco's doesn't do pierogi at the Liberty Street store; that's a fact for this thread I didn't plan to hijack.
-
There are several Yocco's, but not all of them sell pierogi.

Don't you just hate it when the owners of a place act like they own the place? Not the best way to run a service oriented business.
-
Except the inventors seem to disagree. Check it out. ← Geno's does that, too. I guess that's why, other than a rare late night fix, I get my cheesesteaks elsewhere.
-
I've said that many, many times myself. If there is one exception, Gaetanos has one to describe the specific toppings as a "Philly Cheesesteak" has "cheese sauce and fried onions." Menu here Worse is when a place claims to serve "Philly steak and cheese". Nobody, I mean nobody calls it that. The real question is cheesesteak one or two words or does each work? ← Marlton is soooo far away that a Philly Cheesesteak explanation is essential. But what would you expect from a place that serves an A1 cheesesteak? Cheesesteak as two words? Frigginidiotic! Steak and Cheese? Isn't that how you kill a vampire?

Michael Klein says that Koch's reopens today with long-time employee Larry Dickerson at the helm. Thursday thru Sundays for now. University City deli is reopening is the headline over the inside half of the printed column. Food for thought heads the electronic paragraph.

That's a relief! Given this bash's expenses, it's essential not to overspend for Jello.

I dug out my Goat Heads Soup LP tonight - yeah, vinyl - with a four side fold-out jacket with pix of Mick and the boys, the Goats Head Soup card inside and the liner notes printed on, you guessed it, the liner! Cool '70s photos of the sidemen, including Nicky Hopkins, Billy Preston and others. I remember the hooves and head, as well as the innards from the pig were left at the abbatoir last time - but he kept his curly tail. So I'll guess there will be no soup for us, but perhaps I'll add Angie or Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker) to my set list. Dancing with Mr. D can compliment the Sympathy for the Devil we did last time. I'll leave the one they list as Star Star on the vinyl, where it belongs.

Actually, I'm not getting there until Saturday afternoon. Will you brine the goat, too? Is it legal to put both of them into the same kiddie pool? Can't be mixing those barnyard animals, what with that intelligent design stuff and all.

Overnight the pickles else we have have insufficient food. That's a serious problem at eGullet gatherings.

Was she at the dinner? cuz thats what we ate. I was hoping for additional recs for next time Evan ← I had that same deja revu.

The Mod Squad's coming from Philly. Julie's obvious, but who's Linc and who's Pete? Nice Pickin' shirt!

Food sharing at Chinese restaurants is a cliche, but there's nothing quite like a seemingly endless parade of platters with two tablesful of eGulls. I had some of everything except the egg foo yung, which passed by just as the conversation changed from tingling lips to statins. "I prefer Washington State whites with Crestor..." I had another slice of pork belly instead. Then the second order of Golden Coins appeared. Does anything go better with fried eggplant than ground pork? Maybe bacon would. After all that hot, it's a damn good thing Capogiro isn't far from 9th and Arch. So much for the briefly powerful dollar! Thanks again, Jeff. You, too, Evan.

Last time, Blondie brought a guitar that Al Dente played. I'll bring an accordion and an almost piano. My favorite photo shows Clara, the youngest lil' Varmint, helping me play the piano. There's a cute one with Ian Shorter on the keys, also in this 41 page thread. (If you're gonna look at event photos, start at the back.)
-
While I was on the phone with Katie regarding our travel plans yesterday, a Varmint e-mail arrived wondering when I was registering. This morning, actually.

I'll be sure to taste more fruit flavors next time - not the best thing when you're early in a party of 17 - but I enjoyed the berry. It wasn't powerful, but it was a hell of a lot better than red Jello.
-
I had the aforementioned salted bitter almond and Mora. Mmmmmm! Mora (Lancaster County Blackberry) Gelato is the very purple batch at about 8:30 in the picture just above this post. The large, tart, frozen berry in my serving was killer! If Capogiro were closer to me, I'd spend a fortune there!

Hey, there isn't any butter on it!

They serve their own brand. Unfortunately, there is not much detail on their webpage. The quick turnover in standard sized pots helps.

If you were near The Guard House, your host could have taken you into Conshy for a real hoagie. You have The Guard House pegged, based on my only visit years ago. But if I were really, really hungry, I could eat there. That's more than I can say for the NHL!

I like Primo's rolls, but I have no idea how they tasted 17 years ago. Chicken cheesesteaks [sic] are probably the result of the "healthy eating" trend. I'd guess they've been fowling grills for about 10 years. Roast pork is as old as Italy, but it's still not available at many pizza & cheesesteak joints. You need an oven and a warmer; that's extra equipment.

Kraft will tell you about their product at Whiz here! Somebody more impartial says this: Whiz what? There must be #10 cans of generic cheesy goo out there.

While they do have a funny name, Wawa stores are a class act. They're clean, the ATM is free, gas is cheap(er,) the food is good to very good and the coffee is better. When I pour a Wawa coffee, I don't need a special vocabulary for cup size (it's not lingerie) and I know how much room to leave for cream. Then the lid fits; it really pisses me off to wear a venti. Wawa is the Philly thing I miss most when travelling.

Few food trucks are destinations. Sweet Lucy's was an exception. Several messages in this thread say that xxx is really good, but the line is really long. Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? But we're not likely to walk several blocks so that we can stand in line. Koch's is the exception there. Which brings me to George's truck at 23rd and Chestnut. I'm (sorta) in Center City several times a week (at that same corner.) George, who declined a Saturday work day at that Daily News contest, makes me eggs or a cheesesteak my way when I call his cell. He'll make either of them your way, too. He grills killer marinated chicken breasts on pita with his own tzatziki, tomatoes and onions. Watch out when the Jerseys are ripe next month! And, on a day like today, he busts my stones as I stop for a soda with a Primo hoagie in my hand. We both know I'll get a steak from him next time.
