I first had it at our book group where we were prepared african foods. We started out pouring it over ice cream for dessert then decided it was pretty tasty and finished the bottle!

I ordered mine and will be picking it up on Friday. What a great idea! Thanks Mary for getting it started and Carolyn for being the first out of the gate. I'm looking forward to participating in this. I'm just learning about wines and I think this is going to be a fun way to become more knowledgable.

Kitchen Basics in the Market...
LEdlund replied to a topic in Pacific Northwest & Alaska: Cooking & Baking
Is that the place that has all of the Fiesta ware? -
The caramel recipe looks great. I would like to dip them in chocolate and sprinkle Fleur de Sel on top - like Fran's. I imagine I will use a skewer to dip them and cover the skewer hole by hand. Does this seem like the best method? Also, should I add anything to the chocolate when I melt it?

I got 9 out of 11 also. Really interesting questions.

Could it be the new sports "bar" in the Fisher Plaza? Next to the Cheese Cellar? That might be fun. ← I love quoting myself . I was at The Cheese Cellar and they tell me the new place is John Howie's. It's supposed to open in January.

Mr Ledlund and I were visiting friends in Portland this weekend and the four of us tried clarklewis on Saturday. Except for a few small annoyances (not food related) I loved the place. We were early for an 8:30 reservation so we headed to the bar to wait for our table. It was after 9:00 when we were seated with no apology for the wait. That was a little strange. Lucky for us we were enjoying the fantastic cocktails so it didn't bother us too much. Any place that has a cocktail with Cynar is a place for me. Mr Ledlund loved his Manhattan with bourbon-soaked cherries. Since there were four of us, we were able to try a lot of things. Our highlights: -Endives tossed with brown butter, drizzled with aged balsamic -foie gras with a conserva of quince -gnocchi with truffled butter and Bellwether Farm crescenza -spit roasted suckling pig with unbrian lentils The flavors in all of our dishes were fantastic. Obviously they are using high quality ingredients. One disappoinment was the wine list, which is quite small with mostly italian wines. I can't imagine that they have added a white and a red each week since February. Another disappointment was the service, but we think that it may have been just our server. He would disappear for 15 or so minutes at a time. At least four times we had to flag down another server to find our wine order (which came after we finished our first course), refill water, get our coats etc. As noted previously, the volume in the dining room is quite high and the chairs, well, they sucked - 'nuff said. Nothing on the dessert menu inticed me to try it. Granted, had they not been out of the Meyer Lemon tart we would have tried that. The place was packed on Saturday but we were speculating on it's longevity. Is this someplace locals will go time and time again or is it a novelty that requires only one visit?

Mr. Ledlund will be joining us as well. Thanks again, Rocky. This is going to be fun.

Sounds great to me. Thanks Rocky.

They are more thick and crispy fried. Yum. As Laurie A-B and Rocky said, all their breads are great. I love the Thousand Layer Pancake. Oh, and the salt and pepper pork. And the duck. My stomach is growling

Thursdays are good for me, too.

Thanks for suggesting this Rocky. I would love to be part of a group dinner. Rockin' Wok is very close to my house but we have never eaten in the dining room, always ordered delivery. Also, I have pretty much stuck to the items Mamster highlighted in his review of the place so I am excited to try new things. I'm with White Lotus on the "weird" stuff. I'll ty anything once but reserve judgement

Neuhaus Chocolates makes good hot chocolate. I think there is one in Pacific Place but they are also across the street from the Fairmont Olympic (I still want to call it the Four Seasons!). I haven't tried them yet, but there are a couple of Dilletante Mocha Cafe's downtown now. One is in the bottom of Rainier Square and the other is between University and Union on 6th Avenue. You'd think they might make good hot chocolate. I have a coupon from them that expires at the end of the month. Maybe I'll give them a try!

New York Style Pizza in Seattle area

I am really enjoying this thread because I love good pizza but can't afford (the calories) to eat it all the time. So, since there are others willing to try new places for me, I would like to add Harvey's Tavern to the list. This is a little place on Leary Way that years and years ago I used to frequent. When I worked in Fremont, my office got pizza from them all the time and it was delish. I don't remember much about it now and would be interested to see if it holds up to higher standards...... Thanks for doing my work for me -
There's a place called Soups! (their exclamation point) in the lobby level of the City Centre building that actually makes pretty decent chicken noodle soup. Thier noodles are nice and thick.

I get the impression that they just don't care, based on the continous complaints about service that I keep hearing. To be fair, I've only eaten there once - and it was during the 25 for $25 last year. While we were treated great in the bar - our food server was awful. Plus, I didn't like the large open dining room. I felt like I was eating at a table set up on a football field. The very large tables full of business people didn't help with that either. The Brooklyn is always a favorite. The bar is my usual place to eat when I am with friends. It is also a good place to take less "adventurous" eaters (like my family ). The menu is varied enough to make everyone happy. The last two times I took people to Elliott's I was actually embarrased by the food, it was that bad. From now on I'm sticking to nothing but oysters and/or crab. And not taking out of town guests

Ezell's is a great idea. I love those rolls! My favorite crusty rolls are from Tall Grass Bakery. They're the rolls that are served at Le Gourmand.

I can't believe how much I am fawning over him in that picture Thanks Rocky, for taking all these and putting the album together. It's a fun memory of the evening. OMG, Lauren you have to make that photo of you and AB your avatar ~A ← -
We had a great time this weekend, thanks to all of you for your suggestions. Friday night we at at N9Ne. I wouldn't call it a great food experience, but it was a fun scene and the people watching was great . We had mediocre entrees but good desserts. It was my friends birthday so they brought us a complimentary warm chocolate cake that was very tasty. We also ordered the smores so that was fun. Saturday we had a late breakfast at Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris Hotel. It was a beautiful sunny day and we sat out side and soaked it up. Not even thinking about it, we were in the prime seat to watch the fountain at Bellagio. Again, the food was just OK (everyone at our table had either eggs benedict or crepes) but it was still fun. Saturday night we went to the late show of "O" so we decided to eat at the buffet at Bellagio before. For $35 it was a great value. I had kobe beef, sushi, butternut squash ravioli and tons of shrimp, mussels and clams. And of course the desserts were fabulous. By the way, "O" was great, but if you go, make sure to sit on the floor and not the balcony. There was a lot of action when they come into the audience that we couldn't see because of the overhang. Sunday we played blackjack at the cheapie places all day and ate accordingly. Sunday night dinner was the best of the trip, Olives. The atmosphere was good, the service great, and the food, yum. We started off with the beef carpaccio appetizer at the recommendation of someone at the table next to us and it did not disappoint. Three of us had duck and one had beef tenderloin. The duck was a sliced breast served on top of polenta and duck confit. That was all topped with a dollop of reduced pear puree. The flavors (cinnamon, star anise?) were fantastic and the duck, especially the confit was great. I didn't try the beef, but I did have a bite of the risotto that came with it - very rich and yummy. We were so full and still needed to play a little more blackjack so espresso was our dessert. The menu looked great though. Thanks again for all of the rec's. Lauren

Cooks and Books Visiting Chef Dinners

I'm still recovering from the hug I got from Tony! But Marlarky was the big winner of the evening.....she got a kiss Last night was a great event. It was fun to see everyone (I think there were 24 eG's there, not including Judy) and Brasa did a great job of accomodating a very social crowd. Thanks to all for putting it together. -

Speaking of tipping, what do you all tip for pizza delivery? We have a disagreement in our household over what is appropriate..... I also like the AGOG, but I have them hold the fresh tomatoes (they make the crust too wet imho) and substitute artichoke hearts. Yum. -
The 17th or the 23rd works for me at this point.......

In case there was any doubt that eG influences my life, I had to have carnitas for lunch yesterday I stopped in at Taqueria Guaymus at Greenlake and did a side-by-side comparison of their carnitas versus al pastor soft tacos. The carnitas did not have the crispy edges that I like, but they were pretty tasty. I loved the texture of the al pastor, but there was something sweet that I think was mopped on it. I could have done without that. Too bad there can't be a combination of the two!

Another question about the dress code: I'm heading down there this weekend and have my evening "attire" figured out. But what about during the day? Just walking around the casino's, sightseeing that kind of thing. Are jeans OK?
