  1. I went to Cookworks, Puddifoot, and Motiv today. Cookworks had almost the entire line of Nordic Ware pans (both flexible and non-stick) but unfortunately they didn't have the Cathedral one I wanted. The non-stick ones, at 44 dollars each, aren't a very good deal. I bought a ceramic knife sharpener though. Puddifoot had a very limited selection of bakeware. They don't carry Nordic Ware. Motiv had one regular bundt pan from Nordic Ware. I bought a Silpat (for 30 dollars, just a little bit more than Gourmet Warehouse if I remember correctly). No fancy bundt pan for me. Superstore has the Bavaria Nordic Ware bundt, and the mini bundt pan on sale this week for something like 25 bucks if anyone is interested. (The kiosk outside the Gap at Pacific Centre has the Rose Nordic Ware bundt for 40 dollars too, but you can find it for a lot cheaper on Ebay.)

    Dinner! 2004

I would like to make a reservation at 7pm tomorrow at Chez Percy, please.

    Dinner! 2004

I roasted a chicken today. Before roasting, I mixed up a good amount of olive oil, 1/2 a chopped red onion, a few shallots, Maille's dijon, tarragon and basil and stuffed it under the skin. Cracked a good amount of salt and pepper over the skin. Started off the chicken at 450 degrees (finished at 350) so the skin was nice and crispy. I think I used too much olive oil though b/c I could hear the oil splattering and sizzling in the pan the entire time it was roasting. Oh well. It was moist and juicy.
  4. Ah yes, it's been a while since I've had the fries at Salade de Fruits but I do remember that they're very tasty, thin and crispy.
  5. Sometimes I buy the Balderson's 5 year cheddar from Costco, but I've had better 5 year cheddar from Les Amis. I've bought camembert, brie, and chevre from Costco too. In fact, just finished the last of my Costco chevre today. Costco has a decent selection at pretty good prices. But for most of my cheeses (and my current favourite, Shropshire Blue) I go to Les Amis.
  6. Stilton was always my favorite until I discovered Shropshire Blue. I am eating some right now....
  7. I've been there, but not very recently (probably over a year ago since my last visit). It didn't seem terribly trendy to me, but it's a nice room. It's a restaurant and they have a bar too--but I wouldn't really consider it a lounge unless they've changed the interior (most of the ppl were there to eat). They had this really cool dessert that was a cheese-filled quesadilla drizzled with caramel. Tastes better than it sounds.
  8. Now that I've met Ling, I have only one question ... Where the hell do you put it all??? 1/2 a box of Almond Roca would have finished me for the day! A. ← I put it the same place you put your Reubens--in the gut! Almond Roca are some of my favourite candies. I share Moosh's love for sweets and over time, I seem to have grown a separate stomach just for sugar-laden treats.
  9. Station 23 in Richmond a week ago. I had fried chicken wings, and fries covered in mayo and ketchup. Also had waaaaay too many drinks (my favorite--creme de cacao with Bailey's...mmm...dessert in a glass! Those things are deadly b/c I can't even taste the alcohol. I think they're called Slippery Nipples. ) There was some drunken karaoke going on...haha. This was also the same night I was wandering around Davie, looking for food at 3AM (btw Arne--I know where Fresgo's Inn is now!) Samurai Restaurant on Davie. I eat here about once a week, usually on a Wednesday or Thursday night because I get off work at 8:00pm on those days and don't feel like cooking. I had salmon sashimi, hamachi sashimi, and 1/2 of one of their huge house rolls. Character's on Davie. Just got back from a quick dinner. Wasn't too hungry since I was eating chocolate covered macadamia nuts all day. Oh yeah, and I polished off an entire box of Almond Roca all by myself. Anyway, all I ate was a plate of kalamari. It wasn't fantastic...the yogurt sauce was very runny and bland, but the kalamari was perfectly fine. I used the buy one get one free coupon in the Georgia Street. So full now.
  10. I looked at the map this morning and drove down Balsam around 6pm today but didn't see the store at first. Then I realized it's actually on the corner of Balsam and 41st--I was too late, they were already closed! I'll go on Monday.
  11. The fries at Fritz are yummy, and they are open late too!
  12. Your cookies turned out beautifully, kthull. The caramel pecan cookies especially caught my eye--where can I find the recipe?
  13. I work until 5pm and I hope I can book it down to 41st Ave. before they close today. I haven't been to Puddifoot before, so I'm excited to see what they have to offer.
  14. Yay! Thanks! Now I can make a pretty cake for Christmas.
  15. Is there a cookware store in Vancouver that sells the Nordic Ware Cathedral pans? I've seen the basic bundt pans in stores, but I have my heart set on the Cathedral one. TIA!
  16. Hmm...here's something I do when no one's around. I take some frozen white flour tortillas, and defrost them in the microwave. Then add a good amount of oil into a hot pan, and fry those tortillas up. Sprinkle with salt. They are soooo delicious--crispy, but still a bit soft. I just ate a whole stack of 'em after dinner.
  17. ^It's been 2 years since I've been to Wild Rice, but the menu sounds like it hasn't changed much. The kung-pao chicken is one of my favorite dishes as well. I also really like the slices of beef tenderloin stacked between the fried triangles of sticky rice. Have you tried their Caesars? They use sambal in their recipe--really good! My favorite appetizer is the hot and sour soup; I wonder if that's still available. I've always found their desserts to be lacking, maybe because they used to be all dairy-free (don't know if this is still true).
  18. butter chicken--I was hospitalized after eating this at a friend's birthday party. I now feel sick whenever I smell this dish.
  19. Also, Bourdain considers Vietnamese coffee some of the best in the world. I'd like to think that those of us who enjoy Vietnamese coffee are in good company.

    Dinner! 2004

Yes, I got them from Urban Fare; they were 89 cents each.
  21. Is Alembic a type of coffee, or a brand of coffee? I looked at the map on the website and I think I can find this place. I had a double espresso from Caffe Artigiano yesterday and I added a bit of sugar to it, no milk. It was more concentrated than the espressos I had from Tree, and more bitter.
  22. Giada is thin, but she clearly exercises because her arms are quite toned. I don't find anything "scary" about her--in fact, I think she's one of the most attractive women on FoodTV. I found some of the comments about her body rather rude and unnecessary. As for her show, it's not the best, but it's not terrible either. I like that all of her dishes are simple to prepare, and delicious-looking. I love Anthony Bourdain, Mario Batali, Michael Smith, all the Iron chefs, Ina Garten (her food looks so rich and delicious!) I dislike Rachel Ray's 30 Minute Meals show...she's cute and bubbly, but some of the phrases she repeats are a little annoying. I do, however, like her on $40 Dollars a Day--she seems more comfortable, and I love looking at the different restaurants she visits. Some of the worst shows on FoodTV Canada right now are the Surreal Gourmet, Martin Yan (I can't stand even 2 minutes of this show--he seriously annoys me to death), Party Dish, and Calorie Commando (his desserts look especially revolting.)
  23. Over the Georgia Viaduct and keep going straight/east along Venables Street. Follow Venables until it forms a T with another street: Victoria Drive. Hang a left and go north along Victoria Drive for about 3 or 4 blocks. You'll see Bosa on your right hand/east side. Presto. ← I had to print out a map so I could find Prana Yoga--and that's 5 minutes away. You have a lot of faith in me. I'll make it out of the downtown core one day....
  24. Funny you should mention that. We were just putting together a Fergus Henderson tribute dinner at Fiction. It probably won't be until the new year, when it's really gross outside and the hocks are extra tasty. Is this anything that would pique the interest of other gulleteers? One of the dishes chef did last month was a take on Keller's 'tongue n' cheek', with braised tongue and veal cheek, with a squeek of truffle oil. Awesome. Nice to see some carnivores out there ← Pork hocks, tongue, tripe--I love it all!
