    Asiate

Do you think so for reasons other than liking the cuisine more? I haven't been to Asiate and don't plan on going because I usually don't like Euro-Asian fusion cuisine or spending a lot of money for it, but I dissent from the practice of giving a place 1 star on decor and location alone. For me, it's all about the food. As I've mentioned before, my order of priority in judging a place is (1) food; (2) price; (3) service; distant (4) decor, ambiance. Price and service can be flip-flopped in that list without any problem. I do recognize that hasn't been the way things have been done at the Times, but as far as I'm concerned, that's too bad.
  2. Welcome, Tran. To my knowledge, the place is still there on Mulberry between Bayard and Canal. Other places you can try are the Hong Kong Supermarket on Pike St., Udon's Thai-Indonesian store on Bayard and the Thai store on Mosco St, but none of those are specifically Vietnamese. The New York forum is probably the best place to discuss these kinds of New York-specific things, however.

    Spice Market

Thanks for your report, ewindels. Most instructive.
  4. Metamucil without carbs exists, but it has awful artificial sweeteners in it (aspartame).
  5. I found the New York Times article very interesting, and I think all this attention to what Michelin does and doesn't do is salutary, but the comparison to Zagat is excessive. At least in France, Michelin is certainly much more reliable than Zagat. What did you all think of this, at the end of the NYT article: Odd to me. The French tradition of free speech and irreverence for puffed-up authority is a reason for them to be admired throughout the world. And where are the more widely respected restaurant guides that justify making the French a "laughingstock"?
  6. Food safety concerns? That doesn't seem to pass the smell test, especially as there are no specific allegations in this article. If anyone knows of any specific allegations as to how "sanitation systems failed to meet U.S. standards," please post them in this thread.
  7. It doesn't work for me, and I am registered with the NYT but not a subscriber to News Tracker. I'm guessing it may work for you alone.

    Spice Market

I don't. Please fill us in.
  9. Ice cream in Spanish.

    Spice Market

Just that the ingredients and descriptions sounded clearly Asian, but I assumed that no Vongerichten restaurant could serve real Asian stuff. With all due respect to Lauren, I think we need for someone who likes hot pepper to go to Spice Market and not ask for the spice to be toned down, and see whether it is, anyway.

Yet another fusion restaurant. Thanks for the report, Lauren, but count me as skeptical. I can't remember if we've discussed Vong before. Have you been to Vong? Did you like the food there?
  12. I wouldn't go back. Had your girlfriend injured herself, they could and should have been facing a lawsuit. The word "fuckers" came to my mind when reading this, and I wasn't even there!
  13. It opens at 6 A.M.?
  14. $250/hour for therapy??!!
  15. I'd say "Like a fox guarding the chicken coop" is a food-related simile. And of course, it's a dog-eat-dog world, and the big fish always eat the little fish. Those aren't exactly similes, though. There are also card sharks, and I'm guessing the expression may have started as "He eats up other card players like a shark eats up minnows." Sounds good, anyway. Will we consider "Like a fly in a pile of shit" food-related?
  16. Belmont3, please post mini-reviews of those places, when you have the chance. Also, have you tried Yeah Shanghai Deluxe? I ultimately concluded that it is superior to New Green Bo, though the latter is also a good restaurant.
  17. Thanks Busboy. Russell Baker was such a funny man, and I miss him.
  18. Did they replace or at least comp the dish?!

    Yogurt

I won't buy any yogurt that lists pectin or/and corn starch as ingredients. What's the big idea?!
  20. You can't bring treyfe (unkosher) food into a kosher restaurant, because that violates kashrut laws. So the same conditions would obtain in this nursing home. The same is true of Islamic halal laws, by the way. Good luck to your grandma, Amanda. I take a diuretic to prevent high blood pressure and have been encouraged to drink plenty of water, but that's clearly a different situation. Congestive heart failure seems like a very painful condition. I'm wondering what the minimum amount of water per day necessary to survive for weeks or months would be.
  21. I realize this is probably an off-topic question, but I still would like to know how it is that you are a columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle and live in England. Did you use to live in San Francisco? If you'd rather discuss this in a bio thread, please go ahead. Is the question somehow too prying? If so, sorry about that.
  22. What's the problem with water consumption for congestive heart failure patients?
  23. Donairs are a close cousin to gyros and several other similar middle-eastern dishes. They were invented in my hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia, by the Lebanese owner of a company now called King of Donair. Doner Kebab was invented by a Lebanese person in Halifax? How did it spread to Istanbul, then? Or is "donair" not the same as "doner"???
  24. Indeed, it might be self-defense.
  25. I find prunes helpful. Is there any reason why he shouldn't eat some?
