  1. Pan

    Burger helper

Brooklyn Burger has a nice ring to it, I think.
  2. Some good-looking soups here! aznsailorboi, this is a little nitpicky, but by "coconut sugar," do you mean normal palm sugar, or is it really from coconut palms?
  3. Thats so funny how well known this place is.. I used to date a girl from Hartsdale. But have met many people from Westchester and this place seems to be the spot.. ← Is that that great diner right across from the Hartsdale train station? Probably not, but that's a great diner. It doesn't seem to be a secret at all, though; people line up on weekends.
  4. Here are some Google results for "tom yum kai recipe." Not all of them are actually relevant. "Tom yum gai recipe" results are fewer, but still substantial; same caveat as before, though. Most of the first page of "tom yam gai recipe" results seem irrelevant. "Tom yam kai" has somewhat better results. Between all four of those spellings, there are recipes to choose from, but the important thing is to find a good recipe that satisfies you, not a bunch of recipes that don't. And a propos of that, whose recipe did you use, that you found wanting?
  5. Peaches and pears are obviously out of season in Nova Scotia, but there are always parsnips. Parsnips and parsley are very good in soups.
  6. You should be able to order takeout off the restaurant menu, I think, and here's another vote for the fresh chicken dishes (I love the Gui Zhou Chicken). I don't know what to say about the menu, except that I looked through my menu more than once and made sure no pages were sticking together. There were a few plastic sleeves with no pages in them at the end, so maybe the Prodigal Daughter menu was supposed to have been there. Anyway, no harm done.
  7. The NYC Pizza Survey wasn't very impressed with the square pizza at L&B Spumoni Gardens, and I was one of the surveyors that day. They use commercial sauce. I enjoyed the slice, don't get me wrong, but I don't consider it worth taking that trip ever again -- not for the pizza, anyway. It's possible Di Fara's may not be as good as they used to be (I doubt it; I just think that they're better when their toppings are all fresh, which isn't in the wintertime), but even if that's the case, its square pizza blows Spumoni Gardens to smithereens. On the other hand, L&B's spumoni is very nice. I haven't been keeping secrets. Whatever places I've been to in New York that I thought were worth writing about, I've posted about. The one exception is when I sometimes give a place two or three tries before posting about them. I suppose I could give you a top-10 list, but all of the entries would be places I've posted about before.
  8. Yeah, everyone I knew as a child (children and adults) called it a "fudgicle." Much easier to pronounce!

    Salty Snacks

If cheese counts, my favorite salty snack (albeit more creamy) is Comte' cheese.
  10. Everyone, please remember that some of the folks reading this are not CIA grads, so please watch the acronyms. What does CMC stand for? Off the top of my head, I thought of "chef management consultant," but I doubt it.
  11. My parents call Fairway "Food Fair" all the time. It's not an intentional mistake.
  12. That's more like "Gimme a slice!", Karen.
  13. I could easily imagine a Cantonese dish that includes both sliced-up cucumbers and pork belly. It wouldn't surprise me if hzrt8w makes or at least knows of such a recipe. Of course, you could instead use those vegetables in a salad... Anyway, sleep well (which I wish I was doing at the moment...) ← Yikes, Pan, that was 4am your time when you posted this! Hope you did finally get to sleep okay.[...] ← I was still digesting my supper. I love those spicy beef tendons at Grand Sichuan, but I have to keep in the front of my mind that they really don't love me. In the end, I suppose I got about 45 minutes of sleep in the morning before teaching from 9 to 3 with an hour's break for lunch. Saturdays are often like that for me, and I usually manage to teach well, anyway. And Sunday is pretty much a day off, so I sleep in. Getting back to my stomach, it tends to have trouble with really high-fat things like pork belly. Are you also Miz Iron Stomach, or do you have to do anything to counteract the effects of the fat?
  14. Oh, I think that was called SGO at Purchase when I was there. What does it do at CIA?

    Salty Snacks

Does cheese count? If not, my favorite would have to be the spiced cashews I sometimes buy at Kalustyan's, here in Manhattan. But maybe I don't qualify for this thread, because I wish those were less salty...

  17. You're hilarious! Well, let it not be said that in your case, youth is being wasted on the young. I look forward to all the pictures. I loved the line about the peanut butter/chocolate cookies being "practically health food," too.
  18. I really enjoyed reading that. For now, I have only one question: What's an SGA? Enjoy your current block!
  19. OK, but would you please elaborate?
  20. I thought it was "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes you get rained out," but I guess not in southern California. (Except when the monsoon comes and it floods!) But there's always tomorrow! Any plans for tomorrow, or will you surprise us?
  21. Thanks for those search results, Tracey. Does anyone know if any of those books have tasty, non-bland recipes in them?
  22. I wasn't offended, Katie, and I appreciate all the responses so far. I don't have a list of high-potassium foods in front of me, but some of the nightshades are high-potassium, for example, with tomatoes being the biggest problem (no tomato sauce). Also, many spices are high in potassium. Blessedly, tamarind and lime juice are low in potassium.
  23. Patrick, the diet for peritoneal dialysis patients is very different than for hemodialysis. For example, potassium is not nearly as much of a problem. The thing you have to watch out for with peritoneal dialysis is overhydration in the belly, but that's more a hazard of the treatment than anything dietary (and you have to be very careful to avoid any contamination that could cause peritonitis, but that's not food-related at all). I hope that methodology works for your mother. On average, it has a better survival rate than hemodialysis, but averages aren't the same as the experiences of an individual. Katie, the low potassium aspect of the diet is really important. In the words of the nephrologist, high potassium can lead to sudden death.
  24. Pan

    Fish and Seafood

Also called Asam (=sour) Fish Head. It's made with tamarind. Adam, I thought your Curry Fish Head looked delicious.
  25. From that article: Some of you seem sure this isn't about protecting the health of the Japanese people. I'm not so sure. It sounds to me like the US beef industry was given a clear set of guidelines that required them to be careful, rather than slipshod, and someone in that industry failed the test. If so -- and I don't mean to lump all sectors of the US beef industry together -- you could see why that doesn't engender confidence in the safety of US beef on the part of another government.
