  1. ok i've got a question: how much smoke billows out of the thing as you use it? you probably couldn't tell from when you were down here, but i live in a tiny rowhouse with a tiny deck for a backyard, in a crowded city. if it contains the smoke pretty well, there could be one in my future, but if it's pouring out smoke all day it's not going to work...
  2. i'm going down today too, and am looking forward to NO RAIN. i have to admit that last year i finally bit the bullet and waited in the tony luke's line, and they were out of greens, but i ordered the pork sandwich anyway, and when i got back to my seat i realized they'd given me a cheesesteak instead of pork. it was an outrage. ok it wasn't THAT big a deal, but still.
  3. thanks for that recipe, it does look damn good. the soup gels up pretty well when it cools, eh? p.s. where's the blood cubes? sorry you guys didn't make it to pojangmacha while you were on your trek. good stuff there. i think they're only open in the evenings though.
  4. you have to ask? pm me if you think it'll be considered off-topic for the forum.
  5. Funny, I was under the impression that it was guinea pig: http://gosouthamerica.about.com/od/cuisine/a/cuy.htm ← ha! ok maybe it's not the national dish--googling turns up that ceviche is considered peru's national dish. but lomo saltado turns up in every peruvian recipe guide i can find, and unlike cuy is guaranteed to be on the menu at any peruvian restaurant you go to...
  6. wow, nice job guys. but you didn't get the national dish of peru--beef stir-fried with french fries! that yook gae jang looks great. i love that dish. the bun bo hue looks good too. i didn't know that about the blood in there, ff--i'll ask for it next time maybe.
  7. i like it a lot too. if only we could get it in PA... come to think of it, if only i could get it in NJ or DE, either. i haven't seen it either place. where is this stuff sold?
  8. wow, awesome. i'm totally checking that out, possibly tomorrow. thanks for the tip! i've said before and i'll say again: mama's vegetarian on 20th below market is some of the best falafel i've had in town. i don't know from morrocan eggplant salad, but if you find out let me know.
  9. they also pronounce greenwich that way, but if you're driving in south philly and you stop and ask someone where 'grenich' street is, you're gonna get some confused looks...
  10. wait what?
  11. i don't remember it being like lorenzo's, but more like towne. but i could be wrong. they make good big sandwiches at lazaro's, but the pizza leaves a lot to be desired, even for takeout..
  12. As said. Mike feels there a better things to do in a sunner Saturday than sweat it out over a hot dog steamer. ← but what about MY needs?
  13. welcome to the 'hood, sugarj, and to the forum. if you don't like greek, don't get lazaro's or society hill or towne or omega. although if you're underage you should go get some beer at omega. randazzo's is on 18th, and it used to be pretty solid. sometime in the last couple years some asian folks took it over, and while they're nice, it's just not as good as it used to be. or else my tastes have changed. but if you're nearby, it's worth tossing into the competition. ask for it well done. also dolce carini is big ol floppy NY style pizza. it's at 19th & chestnut and will deliver, but they close kinda early. worth a shot though.
  14. holly, the hot dog truck on 23rd & passyunk ave--your page says it's open saturdays after labor day. do you mean after memorial day, in the summer? or is dude really open on saturdays only in the fall/winter?
  15. 1. it's in that strip mall where woo rae kwan was. 2. dunno 3. pojangmacha. get the gamjjatang, the haemul pajun and a bottle of yipsejoo.
  16. Evan, I have most of my case left and I will gladly trade you for one of the Cakebread cabs. haha, i was just about to offer a bottle for some of that px sherry...
  17. el rey sol is across from tower. i like the beef stew tacos (if they still have them; i haven't been for a good while now). the mrs likes the enchiladas verdes. and welcome neuronix! post more!

    dallas korean

thanks lyle. i'm back in philadelphia now, but will keep this in mind for next time.
  19. that first one is mama's vegetarian. their falafel kicks philly falafel's ass. philly falafel has better free salad bar though.
  20. i haven't had that experience at garibaldi, but i have had it at enough other places that i've always wondered if it's, like, cultural or something. like how in french cafes you won't get your check or a refill or anything unless you ask for it--sitting there nursing an empty cup is fully expected. but who knows. not me, certainly. next up on my radar, the new place just below washington on 9th, with a big ol' BARBACOA neon sign, with a picture of a goat and CHIVO written below it. a place serving as a consistent source of barbacoa? fantastico.
  21. i'm just gonna reply to myself here, because this is where i asked the question--mods, if you want to move this, that would make sense. my question in the post above was answered today at mac's bbq on main street in... well, i'm not sure. near deep ellum, but i don't think it's actually in deep ellum. 39xx main street. the brisket was meltingly tender, not at all dry, and was plenty fatty. it could have been smokier--i couldn't really tell about the smoke ring from where i was standing, but i've had more intensely smoky brisket other places--but it was delicious. ribs were pink through and through from the smoke; sausage was damn good too, although not the loosely-packed sausage that i love at kreuz's. beans were a little sweet but not too much so. for this yankee, mac's is the go-to place in dallas. unfortunately it's only open like 10:30-2 weekdays...
  22. uh, i wrote that, and i was there a couple of weeks ago. and am planning a return visit soon--it's still there, and still open.
  23. get the little grilled fish that the lady makes, which i can't remember the name of. and her haemul pajun, which is the best example of this in the known universe. but mostly get the gamjjatang, which is pork neck bone and potato stew, which is the greatest drinkin dish ever.

    dallas korean

thanks folks, this is a big help!
  25. rumor has it there's a decent-sized korean population in dallas, perhaps even an area that might be referred to as 'little korea.' from my preliminary research, it would appear that a place called seoul garden is pretty much da bomb when it comes to korean, specifically korean bbq. so my questions are: 1. is it still? most reviews i've found are a couple years old. 2. if not, any other recommendations? 3. or is the korean population of dallas fragmented and westernified enough that we shouldn't bother? the person we're visiting has expressed an interest in the cuisine, and it's one of my favorites, so i figured if there's a good place we'll take him out for it. but if not, we'll wait till the next time he comes to philadelphia... thanks folks.
