  1. Pull out your copy of McGee.
  2. You are so clever, Matthew! Rumour has it Dave has more thermometers and probes than other men have golf clubs and socks. Can't handle the shipping charges, though. These suckers are heavy! Ship COD.
  3. Good God, Archie, you really are the Science Guy! Thank you so much for this. I am sorely tempted to try . Really. Just can't think of a way to determine whether a pan has reached 600 degrees. Steel mill, perhaps? Just send the pans to Dave the Cook.
  4. Ummmm, but who did the *single* & *limited* "study" on Ben & Jerry's ice cream? Answer: Follow the money. Steve Milloy, of the above linked junkscience.com, who's been a paid D.C. lobbyist for the paper industry, and Michael Gough, who works at the paper industry-funded Cato Institute. And the FTC complaint was filed by junkscience.com & the Competitive Enterprise Institute. This old "news" was a classic bait & switch. And a classic "don't confuse me with the facts."

    A tomato tart

Marie Martin's tomato tart We've done this twice in the past three days. First time, we cut down on the mustard per SethG's comments in the "Dinner" thread. Last night, we used 5 tablespoons of dijon & it was even better than the first time. Anyone else fixed this?

  11. No need to apologize. Click on the following link: eGullet California boards. By looking at the titles of various threads, you'll come across discussions similiar to your query. You might also click on this: Google results for search on "SF" and "restaurants". Let us know if this helps. Best wishes & welcome to eGullet!
  12. Any examples of "local" as "the be-all & end-all"? Sounds a bit like a straw-man argument to me. Edit: I'm speaking of examples other than the original post. There seems to be much middle ground to explore here. I've not heard enough folks chant the "local only" concept for me to consider it as a mantra.
  13. Have you checked existing threads? There are a bunch on this topic.
  14. Ideally, "local" = less packaging & less shipping cost. Which should translate to lower prices & less plastic & less utilized oil, etc. This is where "local" may begin to trump "organic," in some senses.
  15. Here's one vote for dinner out at $25 to 30 (or less) per person with beverages included. Others? Am I save to assume beverages at 2 glasses of wine? Or what? Also note Mr. G's plea about who & when for arrivals.
  16. Hmmm. Interesting tattoos. http://www.darkdreams.org/asia8.html Sounds like the proposed wine would be like the swill sold here as Marilyn Merlot. Switch winemakers. I'm sure Robin Williams could provide a better quality vino for Asia.
  17. I can't help but believe that the chap would do even better financially if he replaced Hitler with Asia Argento.
  18. Ummmm. Not here. That's Saturday.
  19. We'd love to have you, Rhea. Please make it if you can. And so to Friday evening . . . Dinner out? Dinner in? Drinks out? Drinks in? Help me as here are the choices . . . A. Drinks in/Dinner out/Drinks in B. Drinks in/Dinner in/Drinks out C. Drinks in/Dinner out/Drinks out D. Drinks out/Dinner out/Drinks out E. Drinks out/Dinner in/Drinks out F. Drinks out/Dinner out/Drinks in Or create your own choice or tell me to fuck myself or whatever. Tell me something good.
  20. Housekeeping time . . . As far as Friday evening, do folks want to eat out? If so, please help establish a price range. As far as Saturday day & Sunday day, what might you like to do? Scheduled activities or unscheduled? As far as boarding, both Alex & I can put some people up. I'd like to be as fair about this as possible--i.e., those in most need get the first rooms. Help me with this? Looking forward to this weekend!
