  1. not quite-- scotch + sweet vermouth == Rob Roy rye + sweet vermouth == manhattan Bourbon and canadian make unnamed variations, as far as I'm aware.
  2. Those virginia monopoly prices look a little high... Hunt around for another state. In PA our monopoly is asking $35 for a 1.75 fat bastard of the Grouse, and only $22 for a 750. In states with competitive markets those prices should decrease...
  3. Well... let me say that, as a man, going to some extent formal is wonderful... If you've gone to the bother of buying formal wear, you've gone to the bother of having it tailored so that it is comfortable to wear. I own both a dinner jacket and a tailcoat, and when the need to look fab comes onto the horizon, 90% of my wardrobe decision comes down to one or the other... Whether to wear a white winged collar shirt and tie or a black banded collar shirt, or a turtleneck or something else is the biggest decision I have to make. Actually my avatar pic is me on New Years in my tailcoat with a white turtleneck under which felt great and looked dandy too. Wearing full on formal wear out to dinner at top restaurants is always plausible... if you dine early, you're obviously going to something fabulous afterwards... if you dine late, you've come from something fab... and is a good excuse to abandon the tie and tuck it into the breast pocket as though it has done its duty and that time has passed. Keep those thoughts in mind, and you'll always feel comfortable in the black and satin.
  4. Hmmm... Dewars always strikes me as very slightly bitter... uyck... and J&B has a little too much of the 'burning tires' note to mix into a Rob Roy... fine plain, bad mixed... I like Famous Grouse... but it is a little pricy for a blend... lots of other British home market blends have the proper sweeter notes for rob Roy mixing... Teacher's and Bell's spring to mind... don't know about their availability in Colorado...
  5. Down in Miami I ran across coffee called cortadito, which was an espresso with a splash of cream in it... well, I'm not exactly sure what the dairy product was, but it tasted richer than plain milk.
  6. Somebody in the Reading Terminal used to do it... not sure if it's still there or not. Look in the southwest side of the RTM... that's where I remember seeing it.
  7. Peaches and black pepper Watermelon and chevre
  8. Have *$ ever actually used the "No!" mark anywhere? In order to get a registered mark, they have to claim that they've used it... anybody ever seen it? The TM office certainly doesn't verify the claims...
  9. Blimey! Was just there for dinner last night and nothing looked amiss... Hopefully the place hasn't been financially damaged by whatever shenanigans that have gone on.

    Lemon juice in quantity

The original questioner never mentioned where this lemonade stand was located... If it's in Texas, then find a Central Market, where they run lemons and limes through their industrial orange juicer and sell the fresh squeezed juice by the pint.

    Lemon juice in quantity

Keep in mind that there are different levels of quality in those mexican lime squeezers. The first one I got, one of the cast aluminum looking ones, couldn't stand up to one particularly intransigent lime and one of the handles snapped in two. So in looking for a replacement I aimed for a larger one, and one made my a different factory.

    Lemon juice in quantity

If you've already got a hand blender, you have all the power tools you need. Halve a lemon with a diameter about the same as your hand blender's business end. Drop a lemon half into the bottom of a pint glass. Insert hand blender and pulverize the fruit while leaving the pith behind. Pour off juice and repeat. Some hand blenders work better than others for this purpose.
  13. They're meant to look like little gold bars... a play on their name... a snack for the banker who just couldn't get the bullion off his mind. So small rectangles is the answer.

    Pie Season

    Mmmmmmmmmmmm.... pie. http://www.weebl.jolt.co.uk/pie.htm
  15. My Clemens is the one in Harleysville, at the intersection of Rts 63 and 113. There are Clemens markets all over the place... no idea if they all do the knife sharpening service...

    Vin d'Orange

I missed them too.... but not for lack of trying. Neither of my walnut trees had any green nuts on them within easy reach of any of the long-handled implements I've got at my disposal.
  17. That sounds like a really fancy Cel-ray... kinda appealing, actually.
  18. Well, they're closely related plants... http://nac.tamu.edu/x075bb/caddo/frameidx.html That means that those of us who are sensitive to the evil weed are vulnerable to unpleasant itchiness from lips and esophagus all the way through to the other end (luckily most of the digestive tract isn't wired with nerves that would let us know it...) It's not a happy occurrence. Fortunately it takes real immoderation on my part to get there.
  19. I love pecans, hazlenuts and black walnuts. Cashews are good, but I must moderate consumption of them since they're a close relative (as are mangos) of poison ivy, and overindugence leads to unpleasantness for me. Brazil nuts can be good... but can also be really bad. They're so oily that they get rancid and solventy tasting sometimes.

    Congrats!

    Congrats Rich! Excellent news!
  21. A little more info about the paper, which might help if you want to track it down- comes from France, and costs about 20 cents a sheet. That's all I know about it.
  22. I've always thought of Rose's as a thing unto itself. Not lime juice, not an acceptable substitute for lime juice, but a unique and unreplaceable concoction. I've been disgusted by margaritas I've been given that used Rose's... a travesty. A gin and lime and syrup drink might be mighty tasty, and I love the eGimlet moniker, but if I ordered a Gimlet and got an eGimlet without any offers of an upgrade from the mixologist I'd be surprised. As to substitutes for Rose's, I had no idea that anything came close to it other than the baffling set of slightly different Rose's products out there on the market. There is supermarket Rose's Lime Juice... and the 1% alcohol liquor store Rose's, and then there is Rose's Lime Cordial, which appears strangely dark colored... There may even be more. One of my favorite Rose's products is their lime marmalade... which is sadly not readily available in the U.S., but quite delicious on toast... or so I thought while in boarding school in England a long time ago.
  23. Lots of cutesy words ending in -ie or -y sounds get on my nerves. Baby talk more generally does too. Sammiches and sammies are equally bad... the first is baby talk, and the second is lazy baby talk. Same with baby talk contractions like sketty. You couldn't pronounce it when you were 3 and it was cute. You can't pronounce it when you're 23... not so cute any more. Bevvy for a drink? Only if spoken with a thick North of England accent.
  24. For knife sharpening, look to the butcher's counters at your local supermarkets. I'm Philly suburban as well, and have had the butchers at my local Clemens sharpen a whole bunch of knives for free. They have a sign that says Wednesday is knife sharpening day hanging somewhere near the meat counter. Great service... They've gotta keep their own tools sharp so they're good at it... and quick.
